It was a mercy killing. Tony knew that Phil would torture Tony B and saw that he needed to resolve it. Tony also knew that he had created the problem too.

      Putting here cuz no responses.
The moment Phil started going after Chris’s mom, Tony should’ve started plotting against NY. Blundetto had no idea how correct he was in siding against the Lupertazzis. Remember this, Carmine Sr. was willing to sit down and negotiate with Tony. The timing of it was spectacular, since he was about to get whacked. He capitulated to Tony because he knew Tony could set things in motion.
People underestimate Soprano family’s performance in a war with NY. There’s a reason why Carmine Sr. showed respect, there’s a reason why John spent so many years grooming moles. Tony should’ve started plotting after Phil attacked Chris’s mom, and he should’ve capitalized on Blundetto’s hit on Joey Peeps. They totally could’ve beat the Lupertazzi’s and gotten along with little Carmine.

If Tony tried anything against either side, the entire Dimeo (Sopranos) Family would be extinct. There are only 7 Capos at the highest point in Jersey with 2-4 made soldiers. Who really knows how many associates each has. But my guess is 2-3 at most.

I disagree, Tony should've picked the side of the guy who didn't move to New Jersey & genuinely wasn't sticking his beak in. However, Tony Soprano's arc is crucial in his decision to handle Tony B himself, the last bit of conscience in his psyche was gone. It makes clipping Adrianna all the easier, he sees Tony B again at the end of his Kevin Finnerty dream (last person he sees before walking into a blinding light), & the rest of the series is him running on the hardest impulse.

I never really considered the fact that giving up blundetto could’ve harmed Tony’s image to his own crew. They of course were mad that he wasn’t giving up Blundetto and their own guys were being attacked as a result, but we can see from when Vito was killed that someone like Carlo who wanted Vito dead, was quick to kill Fat Dom for coming to their headquarters and insulting the man. No matter what Vito did, killing one of their own was out of line.

Tony should've supported Brainless II in the war. The war that started at the end for Jersey really started in Season 5. Phil's rampage was absolutely grounds to put him down. Chrissy whined to Tony in fear when he should've made a case against Phil right then. No one could've forseen what happened next, but Phil was already close to the throne & it was predictable enough that he'd never let his grudge go.

You're forgetting the key revelation Johnny Sack made to Tony prior to the FBI raid:
Phil was ultimately just using Billy's death as an excuse to climb the ladder. He wanted either Consigliere or Underboss, and was using Billy as an excuse to leverage for it. Phil was a lot of things, but he wasn't totally unreasonable at that time. Not yet anyways. He became unreasonable once he tasted power, but prior to this he was more realistic in his expectations. He knew that in that life, any one can get clipped at any time. He had to have been somewhat prepared for this possibility given the civil war in NY between Little Carmine and Johnny Sack.
I still don't consider Phil's wrath being 100% genuine as much as I view it as his bargaining chip to make up for doing 20 years in the can for losers like Doc Santoro and Rusty Milio, with no reward awaiting him at the end of it as he anticipated.

Now that is exactly how I was thinking about it. I think Tony b would've been great to win the war against NY.
I mean let's be honest ny has been poking at Jersey for a good while cuz they know they can.
      The war was not preventable.
Killing Tony b only held it off a year or so.
That's where I get that if Ralph was around and Christopher and Tony b , those guys alone could've took down NY.

3:36 the part of the whole saga that a lot of people seem to forget. One of Tony's worst ever ideas (no way in hell was Johnny ever going to agree to a power sharing idea) that that lead to multiple deaths, both directly and indirectly. Tony HAD to kill or give up his cousin to make up for that blunder alone.
Anyways, to answer your question, yes, Tony made the best of a bad situation. But who knows what would have happened if the Feds hadn't raided Johnny Sack to effectively make Phil the acting boss of the family and divert his attention elsewhere.
My only criticism of your video was that you didn't include the best scene from during when Tony is trying to decide what to do about the situation and visits Paulie's house unannounced and finds the painting of Pie o My and himself made up to look like a general. The effect clearly spoke louder than words.

Tony did what he had to do in this situation. Tony B basically gave him no outs here with what he did and left Tony Soprano to deal with the stronger and angry New York Family as well as his own family being pissed that they were at risk financially and their well being with New York because of Tony protecting his cousin. Which they knew deep down he would probably not give them the same protection if they had done the same thing.

I feel like Tony S was checkmated in this situation. I don't think he had any other choice but to either eliminate Tony B himself or let Phil get to him. He could have let Tony B stay in hiding and hope he was never found but that was a big gamble and could have caused Tony S alot of trouble down the road with his own family and worse, with Phil and NY. Nah. I thought of it when rewatching the series.
Here's the scenario. Tony has Sil get some goods together (guns, explosive, and unmarked van). He calls TB and tells him the plan, he'll send Chris with the van and goods to the farm, he'll call Johnny and give up TB's location.
When Phil and his guys show up, they'll go into the house. TB blows up the house and mop up any stragglers if they are still outside.
Next, stage is TB phones Tony and threatens to kill him. He goes back to Jersey and takes a shot Tony (hitting him non-lethally).
Tony then puts a price on TB's head. TB hides out at a safe house in North Carolina and waits for Chris to bring the money he promised. TB hops on a flight to Sicily to hangout with their "cousins" overseas.
They find someone of similar build to TB, kill him, and places his body in the van. Chris heads to IL, find a small town, pay off the coroner to say that the body is TB.
Tony can easily talk Johnny down, it was Phil who placed so much pressure on Johnny and Joey's death.
TB's punishment is ultimately exile, after faking his death. Maybe show up from time to time to do a clandestine hit or two.

7:24 I’ve always said that animal would have absolutely taken Phil considering how obvious his approach to the house is. Animal had a reputation as a top hitman hence why NY hired him in the first place so Phil would have definitely lost that fight. So yeah, Tony saved Phil’s life weirdly enough.

best he could in a bad situation...tony b should of remained a civilian...he knew by gunning down made men from new york it could bring pressure on tony in jersey....regardless if he thought he was going to get caught or not...theirs always somebody lurking unawares and you can never really be sure of no eyes....if anything..tony b should of wore a disguise or drove a different type of car than ditched it....he screwed up by allowing it to come back to him in one way or another....tony b was missing that mob life...and those envelopes....

As I think about it, Tony needed to take Blundetto out swiftly before anyone could have said a thing or done anything, quick, fast and decisive. To wait and let things fester was his biggest mistake. The fact that he waited pretty much set the winds of war into motion later down the line, Phil wanted this guy badly and procrastinating only made things worse. If Tony was waiting he may have well gone to war and tried to take Phil out as soon as he could.. A real tough spot for Tony no doubt.

Tony Killing his Cousin was definitely Better then Letting Phil Have Him for Tony B anyway.
I think it would have been Better for Jersey\ New York Relations if Tony would have Handed Him over. but then again at The end of the Series Phil was just looking for any Excuse to Go to the Mattresses and because of the size disparity things probably would have ended up the same way they did.
Tony B screwed up the Hit. he probably should have tried to get Closer instead of wasting all of his bullets from so far away.
what's Sad about Tony B is He was so close to making it away from That Life but His children had to make those comments and make him Feel as if He had no choice but to attempt the Hit.

Same thing with Vito Spatafore Tony was hiding him when Phil tried confronting Tony about his whereabouts Tony refused to cooperate and tried hiding him that caused Phil to find him first Torture Vito with that merciless beating and raming a pool cue up his ass If Tony would have took care of it Vito would not have suffered and Tony would not have lost the respect from New York and his own Crew. Most importantly there would not have been the war with New York that resulted in the death of Bobby and the coma of Silvio and eventually the demise of Tony. Tony is to blame for what happened because he failed to act when he was supposed to and he failed in the leadership role as Boss of his family

Listening to this video made my mind do the strangest connection: Between this and the death of Dumbledore in Harry Potter. There is a discussion in the seventh book taking place before the event where him and Snape discuss the pros and cons on who has to kill him. They know Draco is ordered top do it and Snape has to at least make the attempt of helping him as to not come off as suspicious (which is also something he's promised Draco's mother to do), however they both know that this will deeply traumatize Draco and ruin his life, but not allowing his plan to succeed would lead to his death as a punishment to his father's failings. The other Deatheaters in Draco's team are psychopaths who will likely torture him, so Snape has to put him out of his misery.

If Tony made an error it was not having Phil clipped sooner.
His major flaw as a boss was allowing clearly dangerous, volatile people like Richie, Ralph and even Chris poison the well.
Like he tells Ralph he's known for having bad tendencies but he empathises because he has them too. He lets himself be surrounded by the toxicity that he can relate to, and not just when it comes to associates either.
He's always too late to recognise what a threat they are while we the audience sees it a mile away. Empathy might be the only positive emotion he was capable of, and ironically it's his biggest weakness.

The "animal Blundetto" actually makes sense if you think about.
Tony B goes ballistic and kills high ranking mafia members which causes huge problems for the gang and Tony is forced to take care of the situation.
Just like a rabid animal who starts attacking people and you need to put him down, you don't want to do this and you feel bad about it but you have to do that, just like how Tony had to kill his own cousin.
    It's a very interesting parallel.

Sammy The Bull Gravano got into a situation like this. He was a captain at the time and one of his soldiers killed a Lucchese soldier. He got caught and was tied up in the basement. Sammy sent a few of his guys over to confirm the story. The Gambino did not lie and told the guys what happened and why. But then the Gambinos left him there to be beaten and tortured to death.
Sammy was fucking furious!!! He told his men that they should have taken the guy with them because he was a Gambino so his own family would have handled it with honor!
The fucking Luccheses with Gaspipe being one of them tortured the poor guy all night!!!
My point is, Tony was 100% correct to do it himself or anyone else in his family. When you start torturing people for breaking rules, you are no longer La Cosa Nostra! You are Al Qaeda or ISIS.

Having recently re-watched this stuff, I can think of only one other way this could have turned out: The only way out of a tunnel is through it.
Tony Soprano should have used Tony B as a way to take out the troublesome Phil Leotardo - focused and surgical this time. If Phil is stalking the NJ guys, looking for revenge, then reverse it. Surveillance on Phil and when the time is right, send Tony B to do it with the best possible targeting.
If Tony B dies in the attempt, he dies likely by Phil's hands and the revenge is satisfied. If Phil dies, the hit Tony B originally tried is completed, and one who wants revenge is gone. It's darwinistic.
Would NYC be pissed? Yes, but mainly Johnny Sack, who will have just lost his most fearsome right hand man at a time when Johnny still needed to worry about coming out above Carmine Jr. And if it's still going to be war, that war starts with Johnny Sack already in a bad position.
Given what actually happens later, it's clear that Phil was the real danger / problem to the NJ family, so that could have been avoided if he was removed earlier.

If Tony S. had given Tony B. up, Tony B. would have been tortured and admitted killing Joe Peeps. This would mean that Johnny Sack would have known that Tony S. lied to him about being with Tony B. at the time of the killing. Tony S. was also protecting himself by not giving up Tony B.

Tony taking out tony B was the best case situation, at this point. You are right he should have done it sooner. Although giving him to Phil, would not have been bad though too. Phil showed up to the house with just a gun and on a cane by himself. I think that ether himself or Johnny sac talked him out of torture, with what he had that night killing tony B would have to be quick and not endanger himself, but tony giving up his family (even though he is not even a made guy) would have made him look weak, and would have the rest of his crew asking themselves who is next.

Isn't it also possible that Tony made up the whole torture thing when talking to his family as a strategy to justify his hesitency to give up Tony B beyond just nepotism. Like I totally believe Phil would request that, but the whole torture thing is only attested by what Tony says IIRC.
