Thanks for bearing your soul to us Smoe! Its super hard being a UA-camr and Artist and realizing what is working and what isnt. I appreciate your honesty and your emotions and can relate! I think figuring out how to make art you are proud of is important and finding ways to share on UA-cam you are proud of is difficult! When you explained how the letters overlap each other and how you connected each one was very interesting for me, and I felt the passion come through here. I think if you make more videos based on the things you are passionate about, people resonate with that. The high view counts are easy to see as "successful" but are usually bloated with people who are not regular fans. So finding that balance is tricky but Im happy to hear you are going in a direction that feels better for now. Cheers - Kiptoe

Hi Doke! I saw one of your videos the other day and you pulled up a book that had all kinds of cool things about letters and font types like seraphs and such. What book was that?
I just watched your one about the "I Try" stuff and felt so bad you hated doing it as I liked some of them.
You are making the right choice Smoe. It's about the art and not about the numbers or the money. Letters are what brought us to you and its the letters that will provide you with longevity. You are a great artist all-round, and though you are obviously good at doing fun and cool characters, what originally drew me to your work was your lettering. Your 'typography style' is easy to read, and looks amazing. The fact that you too like adding surrealistic elements AND the fact that you've got such a charming personality.. *mind you, I am/was typing the word 'charming' right as you were blowing raspberries in your voiceover*.. is a bonus that makes me look forward to seeing each new piece of content you put out.
And as someone who did youtube full time for 5 years, I think it's great that you're going to focus more on the work you love creating.

I always love everything you create SMOE. I don’t watch the videos specifically for the letters or the characters, or whatever subject you are painting. What I love is you as a person, your honesty and your commitment to your work. I’m glad you are finding the “creators path” that works best for you. It’s a joy to watch you work, regardless of what your creating. Keep doing what makes you happy because your joy and excitement for the work is what makes me most happy as a viewer.

I really prefer your letters over the characters, the way you manage to integrate them with the background making it a cohesive art piece just amaze me. This one in particular is magnificent everything just flows so well togheter, keep making what you love!

Back to why I started to follow your content and support you on patreon (I litterally do not have benefits from patreon, 90% of videos I do not find time to watch them before official release). Looking forward to it, to be honest I allready thought about quitting helpy gang cause the more professional and mainstream your content became in the last monthes, the less I enjoid it. As I started to follow, I felt it was more about the art recorded and the fun you had while doing it, meanwhile it felt more like the art that was focused on was the endproduct video itself. So it's personal taste, but Im on your side defentily

You are always amazing. But please put the expectations on the shelf for now. I have art videos (not this page, I'm not phishing, just relating) and the whole thing wore me out. I decided to go back to painting how I want withOUT the camera. Please go by YOU and YOUR heart of what you love, even if it means the camera never turns on. it feels freeing. I have all kinds of weird stuff on my actual social medias, it is MY expression. The most liked/viewed videos are not my baseline because it causes anxiety. So i took a step back and got a better look .... my baseline is: did it seem to reach one person in a helpful or entertaining way? Then I am pleased and feel so happy. Ive even deleted my most popular videos. Your channel helped me through dark times. you brought light and creativity and inspiration to this old dried up artist. thank you. Be free.

Appreciate the personal touch in this. Found you through the 10Hun art collab, and really appreciated your surrealist style. Honestly, I find the graffiti difficult to read, and just appreciate it as an image, but really enjoyed the breakdown of the letters in this video, it dramatically helped me understand it, so thank you.

Just do you bro! Don't worry about other people your mental state and health is more important.. Your content is graff thats you market and loyal following don't make content for the masses that have no clue about the culture or just want to see a cool mural.
Paint what you want to paint that will make content enjoyable for you again you'll find you will be happy producing regular content. Switch it up when you feel you want to and take breaks when you feel like you need them,
I absolutely understand so much of what you're saying Smoe! I've tried to upload weekly videos for probably the better part of 3 years now and I can definitely say, it completely kills your soul! And for me it totally takes the time away from me that I would have to actually make art or do graffiti for the most part. And UA-cam really does have a way of forcing you to make the videos that are going to do better. It's very sad.

U r an amazing artist and I look up to u for both ur skills and explanation of ur personal delimas with UA-cam.i myself am an artist (mostly block printing and chainsaw carving) and go through similar issues. My only advice is what it sounds like u have already gravitated towards.. staying true to urself and the art and not letting algorithms and others opinions direct ur energy. It really shows when u enjoy a piece and that shines through and gets noticed positively by the ones who really matter... U and ur true fans. The rest will come... And if it doesn't then u didn't need it. Jeep ur head up u truly are an amazing artist ...and from what I can tell ... Person as well

just recently started my art youtube channel and it’s pretty small, but I noticed i’m looking way too much into the analytics and started feeling bad when a video didn’t do as good as the previous one. sooo stupid, but hard not to do. also had a few brands sending me art materials to try out (I thought “woah that’s so dope now i can save some money on paints and try out new stuff at the same time, right?” 💡)
buuuut now the pressure is on making content of the stuff i got while having deadlines for other things i scheduled in and a busy summer at the bar that i work in. then, from being overwhelmed and stressed i always get an instant art block and just have the urge to live my life in peace. perfect 😂👌

Yes,Yes!….Yes! Brother. you said everything i think. I don’t do UA-cam videos but I used to “paint on request” which meant paint what they want.. not paint what I want and if you like it, buy it… Yes I made more money by paint on request…(commission) but I was not happy. I want people to like what “I” paint and NOT paint what people like.. (if that makes sense). Money can not be your only reason to paint, Yes we need money but not at the cost of creativity and happiness. Thank you for the video. I love “Letter “ Art. I love your work.

I don't know about anybody else...but I'm here for you, not necessarily your art...im here to watch you enjoy yourself, so can't speak for everybody, but just do what makes you happy...I personally love letters as that shows true creativity...its your style expressed in art... characters are cool but isn't as creative in an artists stand point, in my opinion...im also not super big into art though I just enjoy it

It is exactly this reason why i still have a daytime job, and kept art as a hobby, not a bread winning occupation.
It's nice if you can make some money off of it,to compensate for the materials, but if pressure and unhappiness are overpowering your joy in creativity it is time for a change.

Alternatively, You can do the characters every once in a while to get new viewers and for the most part you can do your "letters" and enjoy your job more. I understand the struggle though. I will watch regardless, do what makes you happy!

I enjoyed your video and honesty. Let me explain something.
Artists are unique. One in a million. That statistic does not work with UA-cam. Your audience are not artists. They are masses. And the masses have no talent, or vision or ability at all. That’s not mean that’s just an observation and the truth.
So trying to appease the masses as an artist, and think everyone will react to your art as an artist. Simply cannot happen.
Statistically, in reality, your audience of artist is about 50. And those analytics do not work with UA-cam.
People enjoy your artwork generally, but it will not be represented in your analytics.
Artists are inspired by your artwork, and those analytics are about 50.
UA-cam analytics has no possible way of interpreting the passion, love, and art work that those 50 people have and admiration they have for you and your artwork. But that number cannot be calculated and is in fact off of the charts.
I hope you understand what I mean. But the quality of the 50 artists that you inspire isa million times the value of 1 million non-artists.
In my opinion people
That’s the problem with robot analytics. They cannot represent passion, love, or art.
But that’s exactly what makes us artists unique.
It’s a love-hate relationship . The things you love the masses will hate, and the things they love you will despise.
Every time.
Don’t give up your art and only use UA-cam to reach those 50 .

Yeah, it is a conflict all the time. The problem is, clicks is money, and no clicks no money. So if i have videos with 50 views, i work 2-3 days editing for 5 cents. I love sharing my stuff, but I try to find a middle way to be able to have enough money to document my art... even if clicks are low... and when i say low, i talk about 20000-30000... this is absolutely not enough to live from... so i have to see that I make advertisement for my shop and my class in every video to be able to afford the editing time... but if it does not work out, i will just quit youtube by the end of the year, and call it a nice experience, but will continue doing my art with other ways of monetisation.

It's very difficult to keep the artwork-live balance with family, friends and all the crazy stuff around it - BUT: You make your decision, we're only glad + proud watching you! i agree - but you can only see something if the robot shows it to you, the robot decides if it shows your stuff to others, if you are doing stuff that a lot of people like to see - so you need to change your content or the robot, or you accept that the stuff that you do is not mainstream… I will lose a lot of followers in 2023, but i can’t change the robot, will not be mainstream, and will go the uncomfortable but fulfilling way…
I feel you so bad. UA-cam is a heartbreaker. I did weekly uploads for a year and I hated it and quit as well. I have one ( very stupid) „viral video“ and it killed my channel 😅🫠 just do what you like 💖 it’s not worth it to kill your love for art. And private life.

From the he(art)! Your videos are going to be the best when you love them. A video a week has always seemed impossible for me. The amount of work you put into a video is insane, it would take at least 5 Smoe's to do that! haha. Taking your time will help the art and content around it resonate with your core audience much more. Letters are where it’s at. People don’t understand how difficult it is to execute a simple piece with solid letter construction, no to little but not to much. Just enough. Also, social media has desensitized everyone to well executed art. Everyone just keeps scrolling and swiping without really understanding how much skill and work goes into the artwork they are looking at.

I have always felt like you do. I've been into graffiti since 1981. I always had natural art talent so I started off adding landscapes and scenery to my letters years ago. But I get a great amount of enjoyment from doing what I want when I feel like it. I was offered a position to do splash pages for Marvel comics in the mid 90s . I had a guy out to my house in Philadelphia and was initially excited. Until he started talking about deadlines. I knew right there i wouldn't keep my commitment to them and told him so. When he left everyone around me was going crazy. They just didn't understand that if I'm not getting the enjoyment and peace that lures me into my craft then the finished product will never be my best. I walked away from a good opportunity but here i am 30 years later and happy as hell i made that decision. Stick to what gives you complete enjoyment. After all, it's your work not theirs.
wow, and it is also a cool story… yeah, 1981 i was -4 years old, hahah minus… so maybe I will talk about that in 30 years as well, kike there was this decision that i once made… hahaha thanks for your comment!

I personally like art and can definitely appreciate this, I think it’s fantastic, and is the type of art I like, even though it’s not aerosol art. Aerosol art and graffiti are my favourite, and as good as this is (fantastic) , it just doesn’t do it for me, it lacks the life and energy that graffiti offers, I can also say this kind of adds something that cans don’t, but not necessarily better, aerosol art to me blows this out of the water, it just doesn’t compete and is not something I’d enjoy watching more of. See with graffiti and aerosol art, the application is fantastic, you can watch it, the paint brush is kind off uncool, I don’t think it really adds anything at all, I really didn’t dig the schetches either. I’m going to be 44 in march and I still love graffiti and think I always will, and this is not graffiti, there is an element of it, but I can’t respect this as graffiti or graffiti art, it’s not, and if it’s going to be like this I think it’s a shame, we’re probably done but not finished, and I must see that dinosaur, holly crap that was amazing, that’s the shit I like, I’m sorry but this doesn’t do it for me, and I agree with you 100%, stuff me, but on my end I guess that’s the end of Smoe, Smoe is done. You’re pretty much dead to me now, but I’d still highly recommend your channel for previous content. Wishing you all the best Smoe, it was good, thank very much for all the great content. Bye 👍

I think that i was capable to feel that change in your channel few months ago. Suddenly i found myself uninterested in your last videos, then in graffiti in general. The social media got me sick. Everything got to be now, and better, and faster. It happens to undergroung graffiti artists with instagram, but they don't see it.

I'm new to your channel smoe and idk if you will see this comment but I subscribed to you just because of your letters. I personally only do graffitti no characters or anything and your actually the only artist I follow because I love your personality and mostly your art. I love how informative you are and I love all the rules you apply Into your lettering. And how you don't care if it's right it just has to look right. That's my favorite saying! I loved you spilling your heart to us and the true artists that watch you are here for your letters and what you love to do. Not for videos that work on you tube. We love you smoe!

Yeah dude because stylewriting is not that mainstream like painting charakters. People who dont have a relation to letterstyling like more understand in stuff what theyve already seen. Best example are these micky popart and a lot of other stuff. And please do not forget that the originally graffiti is not to impress the majority of the people😉

I don't know how "off topic" can be this comment, but anyways... I had an idea and remembered this video. An idea that can be funny and inspiring from an artistical point of view but also useful for the YT "clicks" and other media algorithms. Since you have the opportunity to paint in the abandoned factory, you can select a wall close to a corner and paint an "inverse graffiti", (it would be funny to see you struggling with something like EOMS instead of SMOE hahah) and then pick up a big mirror and put it at the other side of the corner, making the ilussion of 2 pieces where the wrong one is in the "real realm" 🤣

I followed you for the style of your letters. I have purchased 3 of your pieces and they are all letters. Having said that, you are a true artist at heart. Letters or characters your art is awesome.
