I have to admit, I never realized that Sonic games were difficult for casuals. I always just had the "git gud" mentality but now that you mention it, I understand that theres DEFINITELY a learning curve.
Yeah, it's been kind of hard to get this in fans heads for years but you do need to come into Sonic with a different mindset then other platformers.
@@JusaWanderer Exactly. That's what I've said too. Sonic is accessible to kids (always has been) But it is very unique as a Platformer, and does take some time to adjust
The decision to add difficulty options was probably made to be a solution to this exact thing. Having to "get good" to be able to enjoy a game without stumbling around and dying every 3 seconds will turn new potential fans away from the series.
All my friends suck at sonic haha
@@crypted9757 still sounds like a them problem
I just want it to be fun. I don't care if it's for casuals or hardcore, I just want a good, fun sonic game.

yeah for me it's the free roaming & content that is very important
the special stages are kind of meh for me but i'm also looking forward to that, it would've been better if they didn't focus too much on locking you in an animation half the damn level

yeah super mario games are super easy amd people love them so why can't sonic do that
Which Sonic games have you completed btw?
Honestly
I strongly care about whether if it's difficult or not. Something as hard as Sonic Omens pre-patch would be great.
@Chaos2022 I sued @SEGA over to @Sonic The Hedgehog & the lawsuit was filed/signed & soon will be saved.
It's honestly so good that they finally figured out how to make Sonic more widely appealing, even the best Sonic games can be hard for people to get into. It seems like they're pulling this off without skimping on being fun for fans either.
Does this mean the ranking system will be batshit levels of easy
@@totallycoolgamer2682 that isn't my first assumption, no.
@@totallycoolgamer2682 apparently it is
@@DireNemesis I'm pretty sure you're talking about the first demo ranking system which was not actually a working ranking system, the time would always be 00:00:00 no matter what time you completed it. I'm just making an estimate since they're targeting a casual audience.
@@totallycoolgamer2682 they're extremely short levels so it's probably really easy to get S rank.
honestly theres no "good" or "bad" era.

@#1 PIKMIN 2 FAN that people are mindlessly bashing the Adventure games like it just murdered their second son. Adventure 1 and 2 are still great games despite their "jank".

Japan did love frontiers and sonic isn't popular in Japan so I see this is a W for sonic.
Also did you know sonic colors ultimate is coming to steam?
@Rob Sonic is known in Japan but he's always sold and has been received better in western countries. Sega is actually doing a massive push for Sonic this time in Japan.
@Rob it's way more popular in the west than it is there, at least until recently with the second Sonic movie and Frontiers
@Rob Saying "popular" can be agreed on, as the character of Sonic as been voted highly in favorite video characters for Japanese polls. So he's definitely liked but sales within the last several years haven't really reflected that. As pointed out, the movies and Frontiers having that aspect that you can go at your own pace within an open space seem to be resonating with the audience there.
Zelda was kind of in a similar position in Japan. "Popular" and known but the sells were always decent compared to other Nintendo IPs. However with BOTW that game kept climbing on the charts for years.
It's nice to see Sonic doing well in his home country. Just hope the end product is good...
As a newer Sonic fan that just started playing the games this year, I cannot wait for this game to release! I'm probably somewhere in the middle between casual players and hardcore fans, where I don't have as much of the history or experience of most Sonic fans, but I still very much enjoy the franchise and absolutely want it to succeed. Though I should probably be more cautious based on Sonic's history, I'm very confident that this game is gonna be a fun time, at least for me.
@Mr. Thumbs Up #ICalledJeffFowler & filed/signed an @EForms lawsuit against @SEGA over to @Sonic The Hedgehog.
It makes sense particularly at this point in time to make a casual-friendly sonic game because of the movies being so successful
I agree with what you say, though I'm still worried about Critics. You cannot deny that Sonic has received blind hate by these critics- because it's cool to hate on Sonic. It's a trend. And I just don't see it ending anytime soon. There's a lot of people who want to see this Blue Rat fail. I hope it being more open for casuals, that it'll change that.
Ik it's so cool all the critics gave positive reviews playing the Frontiers demo.
“I already told you I’m not a rat… I’m a hedgehog”
-Sonic
The live action movies did good to appeal the normies, I think critics will follow the trend like they usually do.
Agreed, the Sonic "hate base" as it's often called has been running rampant on the internet for God knows how long (too damn long if you ask me!) It's just so irritating listening to these wannabe critics bashing Sonic as a whole because they think it makes them look cool and clever (news flash people, it doesn't! It's just getting old!) It's bad enough to listen to, but it's worse when you realise that Sega seems to respond more to negative feedback than they do positive! Just look no further than all of the whiners complaining about Sonic 4 because it had the "wrong Sonic" in it because he had "ugly green eyes", and angrily demanding that the "Real, shorter, fatter black eyed Sonic" should come back, only for Sega to suddenly bring back the older design as an entirely separate character! There is no way that was a coincidence!
In fairness though it has thankfully started to ease down over the years, especially with the success of the live action movies. It just really is infuriating listening to some bozo who clearly has no idea what they're talking about going "Oh it's Sanic Heghog! Huh, huh, member that? Look at his bajillion stupid friends! Member when he kissed a human? Cringe City! Who even likes these games, other than autistic man-child virgins with rage who post crappy crayon drawings to deviant art and are on the search for boyfriend-free girls? Huh, huh, god I'm so funny and original!"
@@bowmaj8666 Bruh you nailed it. Don't forget the "sONIC hAs haD a RouGh trAnsItiOn tO 3d".
I don't know why but I think Matt does not like cyberspace levels in frontiers
It's funny, I've been playing Sonic games since the 90's and never had trouble, even as a child (Blue Spheres for S3K was different but I never understood what to do). So I always find it fascinating that people can struggle with just jumping from one platform to another lol 😆. Everyone really is built different.
Yup. It's true. Some people have faster reaction time than others. Some I guess have worse depth perception than others. It just depressing that Sonic had to be dumbed down in Forces as a way to make Sonic easier to play when he was just fine and balanced in the Adventure Era. Classic OG Sonic can troll the player by having things kill you from off-screen though
@@littenfire3563 #ICalledJeffFowler & sued @SEGA
Being fair and honest, you're wrong with the untrusting behavior against review scores, most gamers don't trust them not only for Sonic, but how games like FIFA and COD get great scores despite having problems or being unfinished messes, while great games received poor scoring due the "journalist" being a complete incompetent
Examples being DOOM Eternal, Cuphead, Crash N'sane Trilogy and how any sort of difficulty seems to be the "Dark Souls" of the genre it presents, the fact that are multiple people scoring these games separately and completely subjective is also a reason why most players just don't trust or blatantly despise game journalism and scoring as a whole
Is not and never was exclusively to Sonic, i still can't understand why people gets that notion
its because the "Sonic was never good" still stings from the clowns at IGN.
One thing's for sure, it's going to be one of the most accessible Sonic games for casuals to play. Especially when there are so many options for the player to adjust how Sonic controls to his/her liking. That amount of options can easily get more people into playing the game as a result. I can't commend Sonic Team enough for finally implementing that amount of accessibility.
@Ace #ICalledJeffFowler & filed/signed an @EForms lawsuit against @SEGA
Despite the controversy, I think your argument even extends to the cyberspace stages. While they look short and clunky-ish, they may serve as a good introduction to the more traditional formula. They have a ranking system to encourage replayability and multiple pathways to encourage the same thing. If people enjoy the cyberspace stages or even wish they were longer and more engaging, it may give them the idea to try out the games that put immense focus on the play style. Cyberspace may be another way to introduce newcomers to Sonic gameplay.
As a returning Sonic fan, I really want to believe in Sonic Frontier’s success
I’m even planning on pre-ordering the game, I miss the joy I had as a kid playing a Sonic Game (Sonic Rush/Sonic Unleashed)
This franchise was my childhood, I really want to enjoy it again!
@Nicole Cárdenas I sued @SEGA & #ICalledJeffFowler
No. Don't. Do not pre-order it.
Pre-ordering games has made companies worse than they already are.
@Leonard Wolf I sued @SEGA & #ICalledJeffFowler
@@Leonard_Wolf_2056 I usually don’t pre-order stuff, Im just thinking about since it’s hard to get things release-date in my country and pre-ordering will help me get it! (Maybe another way around it would be buying it online- but I wanna have the physical game if possible)
But Im all ears on your opinion, why shouldn’t I do it?
@@Nico_SV when one Pre-orders a product, there has to be a certain amount of trust for the consumer to put his money on the line based on the rough trailers and showcases of that product.
I assume you've seen the trailers and gameplay footages, so tell me... Are you really willing to trust the same company which has a record of releasing bad games?
Are you ready to be dissapointed and lose 60 dollars with another bad sonic game?
The same company which has not released a good sonic game since atleast unleashed?
Reason why it's bad for the industry is due to that company seeing people trust them despite terrible business practises.
Companies are not meant to be trusted, they are not your friends and they can never be your friends. It's just business.
I understand why you would want a physical copy and why Pre-ordering would be easier, to which I have only one thing to say: be strong.
I realize you want sonic to succe just... Do you truly think with Sega as a publisher and with Lizuka as the director, frontiers will some how be "good"?
P. S. On the issue with physical copy. Do you want to just have a physical copy to have it, or do you want to have a physical copy to own it?
If it's the latter, it is no longer possible due to DRM. and yes, consoles have DRMs as well, since xbox one & ps4.
PLEASE DO WELL FRONTIERS! WE'RE ROOTIN' FOR YA, BABY!
On the second part, I think I can relate to that a bit. My cousins and my sister struggle really hard playing Sonic games, including Generations, and one of them was a mid-teen when they played it. Even I got stuck on the slide sections during my first attempts on Generations, and I've always gotten D and E on Sonic Heroes and Adventure 2 back during University year.
The most optimal way to play sonic unleashed excluding the unleashed Project is the Xbox series S/X with a consistent 60 FPS and if your TV supports it 120 FPS boost
That means jungle joyride won’t look like a slideshow
The thing with the low point of of people not liking how the game looks to how lots of people like it now, reminds me of the hype train for the first Sonic movie
Sonic Anxiety Disorder

Sounds about right.
That story you mentioned of your cousin does remind me of when my nieces wanted to play Sonic Forces. Heck, that's even why I had to go back in 2020 and try the game again; even though they weren't good at the game (Stage 2 is not what I'd expect children to fail at), they were having FUN. And honestly, that's all I want out of games: to have fun with them, you know?

I dont care about game being hard or not
I just want to see if its fun
Like Unleashed was not only the hardest Boost game in the series it was also the most fun by far
Werehog Stage was also not that hard but its pretty fun, just goes on a bit too long and kinda wish the battle theme only play during the LAST fight of the level
@Reno I sued @SEGA & #ICalledJeffFowler
I consider myself a big sonic fan, but tbh frontiers will be the FIRST 3D sonic game that I will play! I was worried about the gameplay cause I'm a casual and I've seen some sonic gameplays in action and they look a little hard to play for me since I'm not use to them, so I just hope sonic frontiers will be enjoyable and fun!
I agree with the thesis. The game format allows people to do whatever feels fun. If people like combat they can do that. If not the fights can be ignored. Cyberspace will be fun for casuals who've barely touched the levels before. But I think one aspect that will really help that you didn't bring up is how similar this format is to other popular games. A lot of Sonic fans would have preferred Sonic style islands for open zones. However Kronos (and the other island I presume) will be reminiscent for other major games like BotW, HZD, Arcues, etc. Hard part for most franchise series is either finding a good place to start or already having an opinion on the style. So with Frontiers appearing more like other games, it's more incentivizing to jump in here
I said it before and I will say it again, as long as Frontiers' story is good, I will love it either way.
@Sezune Mizuhana #ICalledJeffFowler & sued @SEGA which will cancel the future of Sonic
Sega and Sonic team really has a chance to knock it out of the park, the good will with the past 2 Sonic movies, Origins...well it depends on who you ask, but Prime also being in there corner. They just have to Nail it with Frontiers
from the moment i saw it i knew it was gonna be at least fun and tbh thats all i care about i dont play sonic games for the graphics or even the story. it just needs to be fun that should be first priority
I wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy and my memory was off. But Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast had an 87% score on Gamerankings (the old video game Metacritic style website). The original reception to the game was a good one.

2:55 SA1 & SA2 haven't aged well in terms of sound design, camera and cutscenes but the gameplay still holds up. Gameplay is what matters most to a video....GAME. So...yes they did.
Well, the jank was still there. I do like SA 1 and especially SA 2, but I can't really say they really do age well. It takes awhile to really process the whole thing and avoid the jank feel.
Still does not justify
Bro the gameplay didn't age well
I feel like this will be a Mario odyssey situation
Easy game but very fun
I'm the complete opposite, I found Odyssey more difficult than any Sonic game I've played in the past decade. Seriously!! Where the heck was THAT LAST MOON!!?
“ Sonic Anxiety Disorder "
So SAD
I like casuals that are more open minded just like you described in the video but than you have people who just straightout hate everything Sonic related. I hope that the positive will outweighed the negative casuals for good.
I can honestly agree. If this game comes out well it'll definitely be a great starter game for the series. The fact that you can go at your own pace will be what helps. The hope is if the game is fun and actually good is that they'll still be some form of difficulty for vets. If not this game, hopefully for future ones. I've seen far to many series chase the money in favor of toning down that people liked about the series in the first place. Let's hope it doesn't go that route.
It releases on my birthday (i have never been more excited for a birthday)
Always Cool, looking good for it! 👍🏻🙏👍🏻🇰🇭💗💙🦔

You should have let your friend cousin to play Sonic Colors, Sonic Colors is the reason we got so many Sonic fans 10 years ago.
Damn man, I’ve been one of the most jaded and cynical fans for the past ~9 or so years… but you talking about Frontiers has literally lifted my spirit about it. I don’t know how to describe it exactly, but your explanation of things kind of opened my eyes I guess
Sonic became a hyperfixation post taking my little cousin to see Sonic 2. Btw I’m 22 and have no previous Sonic info. I don’t play video games at all. But I did download Sonic 1 as an app. It’s fun, but I’m stuck and let it be. I still watch play throughs to know the ‘Sonic story’ and ‘lore’. I had two weeks where I just went down an Archie hole. Everything seems super supportive and as a first time watcher this is teaching me a lot about the industry and Sonic itself. I liked ur analysis and can’t wait to see where this is going. I’m still on the fence of purchasing anything cuz I don’t have any game consoles….but I’ll think about it. Maybe I’ll buy a switch or something 🤣🤣

I love how some of your videos are exactly what I've been thinking. I didn't watch the video yet but I alredy can say that I think it will be great for new fans because the "boost style" levels are optional, or at least just the easy ones are not. I think the reason that Sonic was hated by casuals/critics is because there are some bs/arbitrary rules in those games such as:
1. Confusing hubworlds/navigation in SA
2. Sun/Moon medals in unleashed
3. BS bugs in sonic 06
They need to make Sonic games more beginner friendly but keep the high skill ceiling.
I haven't heard that one before about critics. Much as I love Sonic I definitely wouldn't give Unleashed a higher score than it got. There was potential with the Sonic mechanic as we saw with Sonic Colors but the level design had so many cheap kills even on those and the werehog was just not good. So the 60 on 360 and 66 on Wii on Metacritic were about right. Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces I thought could have been higher scored if they weren't so short.
4:26 what about sonic heroes 🙃🙆🏻
I would play it even with all of the glitches
This is prolly the reason why my sister doesn't like Sonic and I do. Frontiers will be THE game to introduce Sonic to casuals. Thanks Matt.

Sir matta the only reason why me love sonic frontiers is beacuse I’m just a small chad
@Matthasnocuts you need to go back and play Sonic Generations my guy. Easily a top 5 sonic game especially if we are talking modern era Sonic games but it also holds its own with the classics as well due to the inclusion of classic sonic and how well he played in that game, the boost play was perfected and maybe not the best story but was the best at pulling at our collective nostalgia strings. I've literally have never heard anyone say they dislike Sonic Gen
