Thank you sir, the difference between your arc handling with the usual left-right approach is heaven and hell. It is so smooth comparing the left-right handling.
Wow! thank you so much. This made a huge difference in how I drive using a controller. Before, I was doing the horizontal left-right motion to turn the wheel and it was super difficult. Now, with the 360 degree turning method I have so much more control and can actually take curves at a much higher speed without losing control. Brilliant tip!

@@iContrast why are these controllers designed to be driven with left thumb and right hand practically doing nothing, while 95% of people are right handed? Wouldn't you have better control accuracy with right thumb?
I tried that steering method with a PS4 controller and F1 2019 for PC. It was easier by increasing the center deadzone to 5, otherwise I found it was difficult to get the car keeping a straight line on long straights. Also, my thumb was getting tired after a while with this steering method, but then I realized you can release for a few seconds on long straights.
Bro I switched to F1 2018 from F1 2014 last week, and I realised the handling is so difficult in 2018 compared to 2014. My car always spins and hit the barrier when there is a slight curve in straights. Turning is still fine because the car is slow, but handling the car in high speed is a nightmare. Do you have any suggestion for me, or is there a way in setting where I can make the handling similar to 2014?
@@areebhussain4856 yeah, me too. I just switched to 2017. I've played a lot of 2014 and 2012. The handling in f1 2014 compared to f1 2017 is much more difficult but if I compare it to 2012 it feels ok. So, what I want to say is that 2014 was messed up.

Great tip for the steering stick, never thought of that. I grew up playing Gran Turismo, though, so I use the right stick for gas/brake and the shoulders for shifting. I naturally use my throttle like Senna and the stick helps.
The steer along the rim trick... I realized the importance of smooth steering, but I didn't think that I should be trying it like that. Thanks for making this video!
Looking back at this i realized how helpful this is and used this method on AC on pc with a ps4 controller and i saw a huge improved thanks again for this amazing tip!
I tried to drive with this new steering technique on F1 2018 for the first time and it soo difficult especially on those small turns you make on the straight when going from left to right. Either I don't turn at all or I turn a lot. It seems like difficult thing to master, but definitely worth it.
an advanced controller setup in F1 2017 would be a great video if you could do it. My wheels in the game turn too quickly whatever linearity or advanced settings I use
I personally only use the default settings, i only really ever used to tamper with them in F1 2016. I could try mess with them now but it is possible to be smooth with the default settings, just takes time and practice!
@@iContrast can u make tutorial for grand prix using controller because at the start sometimes i hit people because i need to focus both on steering and oopponents
It worked, my tire management was purple. Before it was impossible to get green because I couldn’t even do precise turns. And I got all purple on everything (except ERS management which I need to work on😅) but other than my personal problem it works amazing.
the analog stick covers, grips, pads, whatever you know them as, helped me with steering because it made the stick that little bit taller, which means i could really finely control the front end
I know have my wheel but I struggled a lot by doing exactly what you're telling us not to do LOL now I just want to give it a try for fun. Nice suggestion
Finally someone who has the same fingerplacement as me :D Friends always call me weird for having my left index finger on the trigger but my right middle finger on the right trigger
You are a genius! Just got back into f1 with 2018 on gamepass on pc and this trick os great. You really can fly through turns and let the car go through turns before throttling out. Just got pole in Bahrain with Williams. Might need to turn off some of the default assists.
I've been using the arced steering method for years. I think it was because back in the day on Midnight Club LA I used to do that with the camera, push it forward on the right stick when passing inbetween cars to make it look like you're going a little slower and then tilt the camera either side to see if you had just enough clearance. Then I did it with steering. It's night and day difference. So much smoother and much much easier...
Be even smoother with an Xbox one controller. I had f1 2011 to and including 2017 on the ps3/ ps4 , then ditched PlayStation for the Xbox one X and got f1 2017 again. Felt weird at first but now I'm consistently quicker and more in control especially of the steering.
Oh my god just bought f1 2020 and this is exactly what I was looking for. Was really getting frustrated with the analog stick and how even a little bit of movement moves the car so much!
For the turning with the joystick, I just turn it up diagonally if it’s not a very wide turn, that way, I’m only turning the disc trance the joystick is from the center horizontally, which makes for a smoother turn.
For a controller, to make things a bit more "realistic" I made my bumpers (Not the triggers) as my gear shifting, to sorta act as paddles, and I use my middle fingers as throttle and break, and pointer for gear shifting.
That's the correct way to hold a gamepad and it's ergonomic - you feel your hands relaxing and feeling amazing. It just takes a few sessions or more to get used to if you switch from index fingers on triggers, to middle fingers on triggers. You'll just get a few sessions of slow lap times and that's no big deal.
I personally don’t recommend doing it, having both index and middle fingers active on the triggers and R1 L1 makes it feel alot less stable whilst trying to trail brake and downshift or put power down and shift up at the same time. I’d rather have my right thumb do the job of shifting and other things rather then having multiple fingers involved making it more complex for achieving the same thing, but do whatever works for you.
Use thumb grips, I'm using the hard plastic ones with many tiny spikes. This will massively improve joystick control so you don't need the rotating technique at all.
Thank you very much for the tutorial... I’m not the best gamer but do enjoy the F1 game. I will give your methods a good try to see if it improves my tyre wear and fuel consumption practice programs as well as my general racing speed. Thanks again!
Going into the settings and adding some throttle and brake linearity has helped me tremendously. The right setting really helps with both low speed acceleration as well as allowing you to trail the brakes a bit easier without lockups.
@@DjOlidang I have each set to 25, which I feel works fairly well for most tracks. The key is to gently roll on the throttle until you've gained enough speed that downforce at the rear allows you to go full throttle without wheelspin. After a little practice you'll get it down.

@@DjOlidang hell yeah that's great. So as you get used to the new settings you'll find that you can pick up some time because now you can use the brakes while cornering without locking up the fronts so easily. There are a lot of corners where trailing the brakes can really help you hold a lot of speed while getting the front of the car pointed.

I'd like to add, be smooth into the corner as well as smooth out of the corner with the analog stick, instead of just letting go of the stick. Also, I forced myself to hold the PS4 controller the correct way. It is far more ergonomic to hold the triggers with your middle finger and the shoulder buttons with index fingers. It feels really weird at first, to brake and gas with middle fingers, but with a bit of determination, it becomes totally natural (I won't ever go back now). Your hands will thank you. It also opens up the opportunity to use the shoulder buttons for gear shifts , whereas they were unused before, because your index fingers were on the triggers Also allowing you two more buttons to assign other stuff to (X, Circle, Square, Triangle). Take your time learning the smooth strokes of the analog stick because it feels unnatural at first. It may even take some users days or weeks to work it out in their heads. You won't ever be tapping again and looks better if you record videos. Also make sure you use speed sensitivity (in your game's settings) and adjust and test and retest till you find the sweet spot. This all works in simulation games like Assetto Corsa believe it or not. I race guys using wheels and they have no idea I'm on a gamepad, even if you spectate. I'm one of the fastest on track with a wheel and equally devastating with a gamepad, but still in the process of learning the latter.
i tried the rim technique at one point just out of curiosity (before even finding this video) and i just didn't feel like i could attack the corners as much with it. i don't mash the stick completely over to the sides multiple times during a high speed corner tho :P
