My wife and I holidayed in Jersey in July and I'm nearly sure I recognise the field. I reckoned it was very steep for potato s, but I had heard that winches were used and the potatoes were very valuable, that why every possible place was used even tho it was very steep Thanks for the education

These haven’t had seaweed on for a long time. Seaweed is predominantly used in the west of the island in the lighter sandier soils to increase soil organic matter. On the heavier soil it leaves the soil too wet for us to work. We’d argue these taste just as good !
No these early fields have potatoes year after year. The tunnels in the other video are organic all they have is another crop or cover crop and plenty of muck!

I had a girlfriend who lived just round the corner from this field! I always loved the ‘toy town’ patchwork of Jersey’s little fields but never appreciated the hard work that they entailed. I’m guessing you’re still using Portuguese labour on Jersey?

I’ve planted spuds here in England, but that was on flat(ish) land and all mechanise but not this early in the year. Watching that them plant on the hill side is like going back to the beginning of the 20th century and ploughing with a pair of plough engines. I hope you get good money for those lovely tasty spuds.

I think because the soil never has big tractors or machines driving over it there is little to no compaction which helps massively with run off. The potatoes are also only in the ground for around 12/13 weeks. So for 3/4 of the year the fields are in a cover crop.
How often go you grow potatoes on those steep fields? How many steep fields like that do you have? What do you grow on those fields in other years? Looked very hard work using the ridger couldn't you make one that was heavier, had 4 depth adjustable neumatic tyres so your dad didn't have to put himself through that ordeal
Yes we do that as well these ones are just a bit too steep for that. Monday and Tuesday we will be planting fields like that I’ll post that up in Wednesdays video.

Thank you very much, it’s only a small area of the very first early ones grown on these slopes. Gradually we move onto the flatter fields.

Thanks very much, there’s quite a few of the early slopes not grown on any more but the ones with nice soil and favourable locations are still used.

Yes! Aiming for fresh loose skin salad potaotes so we want high numbers and small size. By planting close this helps produce this.

Are they grown on a 1 in 3 or 4 year rotation? Do you need to sterilize the soil in the tunnels after cropping prior to replanting?

Yes that’s the idea, in certain fields we now have too much ground at the top !

Thanks it’s around 3.3 tonne bins an acre. Hard to say exactly as all of these early ones are planted in boxes.

We’ve never grown artichokes but we have a very small area of Daffs on the flatter fields just to supply the local market.

Its really good seeing you planting like that how often can the Cotils be used between potatoes ?
Between each crop a cover crop is sown. Usually comprises of a cereal or grass plus phacelia or a mustard.
