Messmer's in-game theme actually answers the question of who his father is. The theme incorporates motifs from Radagon's theme heavily implying that Messmer is his son. This would also add a generation of born empyreans before Marika's relationship with Godfrey, those we know of being Melina and Messmer.

The war with Giants were when Marika was with Godfrey (so after Messmer and Melina were born), after the war she banished Godfrey, changed to redhaired radagon and went to Rennala. Metyr didn't betray the Greater Will, at some point she was wounded and lost both the ability to recieve communications from the Greater will and give birth to two fingers (giving birth to simple minded finger creepers instead). Most likely what gave her the wound is the finger slayer blade as it lines up with both Metyrs wounds and the the blades description.

However after sending Elden Beast the Greater Will was like "That oughta do it." and fucked off, never to return or even acknowledge the Lands Between. Meanwhile the fingers, who were essentially tv antennae for the Greater Will's messages, couldn't accept this and continue relaying their own made-up messages.

I thought deep about why miquella didn't heal malenia and somehow healed the red mane chick, and I think that has a lot to do with the fact malenia isn't just affected by scarlet rot but she is actually a vessel for the god of rot which I think goes a lot deeper than being able to heal it.

Someone on reddit said it best so here
Miquella isn't cursed to be an eternal child, he's actually cursed with NASCENCY. Everything from his body to his ambitions will never grow and develop to their full form.
His plan to cure Malenia was incomplete, his plans to give Godrick a true death could never be accomplished, and his dream of making the Haligtree an alternative to the Erdtree never happened not because he lacked the power or the focus, but simply due to the facts of his curse.
This also extends into the Lands of Shadow. His ambitions towards the ending of becoming a true God are fated to be foiled by us the players. Everything from his body to his schemes are incapable of being developed, and this isn't a plot hole: it's an integral part of his character and curse. It makes him tragic in a similar way to his sister-he might have had good intentions, he might have been doing things for good reasons debatably, but he's incapable of bringing his will fully into the world because of his curse.

While the map doesn't line up perfectly, I think the idea is that the new map is meant to at some point had been the center of the old map (in universe, not as in an older version of the game or anything), but stuff just moved out of place with time. The suppressing tower in the middle is probably meant to be right on the intersection of the 6 divine towers around the central chasm in the original map. Since the towers are very peculiarly placed and always pointed to nothing.

The entire story is centered around a silly, nonsensical story. Lazy writing if you ask me. The big cliffhanger was dissapointing indeed.
It centers around a failed concept. One person is two people. You have to really suspend disbelief. Luckily there is brilliance wrapped around the silly premise. Redahn was then reused. Another lazy decision.
Compared to bloodborne, thier magnus opus, it's a noticeable step down. Nothing is done as well as previous games except gameplay. I correct myself, those artists are top tier. Whole team is. Less site of graces in future I hope at least. That feeling of do I keep pushing has long been gone. Not one (barely was any) short cut in elden ring felt rewarding or good. I want a big sprawling interconnected city again. As do all vets. Quality over quantity, always. I know kids love the new style. There's a clear pattern I've noticed and I've been playing since ps3 demon souls. On release.
I hope they stay away from open world design for now on and concentrate more on bloodborne esque level design and spend more money on writers. If you do go open world, at least fill it with a few more npcs. It was a harder sell this time around. They did get a writer with George Martin this time but they clearly struggled being limited creativley by his framework. What he wrote anyway doesn't top dark souls or bloodborne. Fromsoft writers were obviously handicapped by this framework.
Most players don't care about story or even know what it is or care to know. Most need to be told what it is from youtubers. The game has been flooded with young kids. The amazing community souls games always had has been diluted. It is much better on pc however than console. Message quality in game proves that.
Give the artists a raise and never let them go.

All he says is that Bayle is furious at the ancient dragons and calls them proud, conceited, and arrogant. My assumption with Messmer being Marika’s first born is that she had tried to have a child with Radagan originally, but realized that there would be some weird magical curse complications with having a child with herself after he was born. I always thought the coffin's, was how Messmer transported his army to the land of shadow, cause in game they don't mention where Messmer's Army of convicts came from, I'm thinking outside the lands between, cause just based on the base game lore, I didn't read anything about a whole prison being lead into battle, and not one person mention it, not one spirit being like "I hope my brother returns." Or "Those convicts were put to good use, on the front lines." So yeah it does say somewhere that the stone coffins could "float" on the water (but don't quote me on that) but that's just a guess

As pointed in this video the coffins share some design elements with the Eternal City and the putrescent slimes as well as the putrescent knight with the purple eyes (not quite the same shade of St Trina's purple imo) are prob reskinned tears. Honestly I think there’s hidden science-fiction. The Greater Will, according to Ymir, was basically the rules of the universe starting with the Big Bang, and the one becoming many, we are all stardust. It seems the Numens came to this world in sleeper cryogenic pods in these petrified space ships that crashed into the planet. The silver tears are almost definitely the grey goo of advanced nanotechnology, and putrescence its decayed form from an older version with flaws. The Nox made of it, and the spirits they infuse with them after solidifying the Nox being advanced AI and somewhat independent solid holograms carried by little nanochips called spirit ash. The Carians descend more directly from these “silver blooded” forms. And Marika with the golden forms are the original humans/Numen just enhanced with cybernetic nanotech which makes the red blood become golden, and the sap of their trees too. The hornsent are genetic experiments, and the Omens from a gene where some Numen interbred with them and the Numens to become more one with nature and converge with their environment, in the opposite of the nanotech being a way to impose on the environment. A race between the AI, the genetically engineered, and the golden enhanced race that they tried to make a perfect blend of it all.

Florissax was an ancient dragon, not a drake, so the corpse definitely doesn't belong to her. Considering she decided to set up shop there, I'm pretty inclined to believe she's the one who's responsible for slaying it, either directly or indirectly. Why did she do it? Simply because it was Bayle's spawn (who's one of the oldest, but not the oldest, ancient dragons).
According to her, Igon and Bayle shared a common trait: their fearless (and foolish) ambition. So, if her words are to be trusted, we can deduce that Bayle's rebellion was simply motivated by his thirst for power. Whether it happened before or after the dragon god fled is unknown, but it resulted in Placidussax sustaining heavy injuries and having to lock himself beyond time to await her return.
The reliefs on the stone coffins make it evident that they belong to the same culture that gave rise to the Anicent Dynasty. The fact that they resemble ships and can be found near the coastline leads me to believe they were not only mausoleums, but also the means of transportation used to arrive to the Lands Between. The similarities between putrescence and silver tears likely stem from the fact that they're both living things originating from non-living things.

The Erdtree was a twin tree since the beginning, it is the light tree + dark tree intertwined together and its location is exactly the same place where Erdtree is in the base game. It should have the quality of life and death, light and shadow, and every concept contradicting each other. However, when Marika sealed away the Shadow Realm, the physical body of both trees was removed from the world hence Marika made a glowing phantom tree to replace the Erdtree. This might be because Marika always wishes to get rid of all the darkness in the world, but the twin trees can not be separated, so might as well just seal them both away and only leave the "good part" in people's vision.

Now that the dlc has a 4th butterfly and that the connection of Melina and Messmer was made, I'm pretty sure that the whole theory is confirmed.
About St Trina plant like body, a friend of mine reminded me that the Radagon we meet was kinda made of some sort of clay. So supposedly, all discarded flesh went in some kind of transformation before or after becoming whole again.

17:40 in regard to Miquella riding "Torrent", keep in mind that those giant stone structures littered around the DLC map (especially all over the place in the St. Trina area as you're platforming down) are all adorned with what appears to be a figurehead of some kind that looks juts like Torrent. When I saw this, it made me assume that there is just a general species of steeds like Torrent. Perhaps Miquella is depicted as generally riding one of those Steeds. If they are figureheads on ships and whatnot, they must be popular mounts for people in the lands between--or were at one time (since we don't see any of them in the game outside of these examples). That could explain why they're "spectral steeds", perhaps? Maybe they're a species of now extinct steeds who were once material but now only exist as spectres who choose when and whom to serve? I don't know.

I think the Scadutree Chalice is a really big mystery too. It's marked on the map for a reason. In the artbook for the dlc, it's split up into categories of areas, weapons and enemy types. However on the last page, it's the chalice. IF this was just a random place, then it would've been put in the area section of the artbook. It's almost implying there's something more than just a place to get fragments from.
Also the tall shadow sunflowers in the area are all pointing towards the chalice. Sunflowers are heliotropic, which means they crave and wait for sunlight. I think in the shadow sunflowers are waiting for something else to happen. So maybe in the future the chalice could be used to offer materials or something like in bloodborne with the chalice dungeons, or maybe like a gauntlet of strength from sekiro.

Okay so it's actually pretty simple who mesmer's father is.
There was a theory when the game first came out that there was a third child of Radagon and merika, that being Melina. The reason why this was believed is that each of the three butterfly variants in the game represent 1 of 3 characters, melena, miquella and melania. In the DLC a fourth type of butterfly is added, the black pyrefly which represents messmer. The description for mesmer's ember also states that he had a younger sister with a similar affliction to himself. This is obviously a reference to Melina, all but confirming the butterfly theory.
And if that's not evidence enough, messmer's first phase theme literally samples from radagon's theme. This trope of musical samples and motifs is pretty common throughout the DLC. Consort Rodahn's theme very heavily samples from his star scourge theme, midra's samples from the nomads violin tune that plays in The Forsaken deaths and rellana samples of good portion of her first phase from her sister renala.
The thing is that a whole new interesting section to the timeline it's stated that radahn looked up to Messmer, so he was either born after the omen twins or before Godwynn, either way this imo shows that the marriage between radagon and renalla was purely political as far as the golden order was concerned.

If you're asking what the Scadutree is, you might want to consider Jungian psychology wherein the Shadow represents the hidden, repressed and for the most part the inferior and guilt-laden personality of the unconscious, it typically possesses a person's morally reprehensible tendencies, but can also have good parts because it possesses some of our normal instincts, creative impulses and the like.
In essence, you could consider it is not a separate Erdtree, but rather the secretive and darker reflection of the lands between. It is not a separate place, but rather contained within the lands between in such a way that it is only accessible via Miquella's dream, hence you enter through the slumbering egg of Miquella.

In fact it's stated that Messmer was dispatched from the lands between to the shadow lands to wage the crusade. Queelign, rellana, and others left the lands between with Messmer, thus the crusade on the hornsent occurred after Marika established the golden order. The reason the fire visage and the fell god is on the furnace men is cos it's the enemies that are burnt inside the furnace man, and it's using those motifs is mocking and scaring their enemies we well as illustrating who they've conquered. Additionally, a wild theory I have is Marika and Radagon surviving the jar process of the hornsent and thus this is how they can share one body and have children. A successful divine experiment that actually, ironically somewhat, ended up creating a god.
Radagon's ties to the fell god got so much weirder after the dlc, I'm constantly questioning how the timeline functions now just in case I've messed up placing his first appearance or even the first time he influenced anything. He might've not originally been a part of anything giant-related like the whole curse thing suggests, which could make him another shaman, either related to Marika or just being different altogether and getting messed up once Marika and him share one body.
Another theory has to do with the gate of divinity, now that we know such a thing exists. In order to ascend to godhood (ignoring outer gods and what have you) one must also have a consort to attach to, who serves as the king / queen of their land in the physical world while the god mostly provides guidance and power from their own chambers. What if Radagon had this role from the beginning? What if he was the first Elden Lord all along? It makes sense with Godfrey in mind as well because Godfrey had to have Serosh on his back to contain his wild nature, so that position was taken by a sort of "dummy" god. Radagon sharing his body with Marika's is the perfect way to hide until you can be revealed to the world, plus they kept the truth hidden afterwards as well (that Radagon is Marika and vise versa despite having 2 different plans by the end).
Lots of wild stuff now man.

Now, if they WANTED a new ending. Getting your "heart stolen", then beating Radabeast. That would have been the best way to do it.... But, nah, that didn't happen.
They likely wanted this DLC to not affect ANYTHING in the base game.... Though, it would have been neat to see base game NPCs, or even bosses react to what you do in the DLC.
Imagine how PISSED Malenia would be if you kill Miquella, then come back to fight her then.... Also, would have been neat if Gideon had something to say. "That is some FINE intel, my friend."

Or it could just be that they chose that one, really important cutscene out of the game and only used it for the trailer. If the ladder is true, then I do think that shadow of the erdtree's ending was extremely dissapointing.

They are all called dragons but it seems that they are distinct. Wyrms are warriors who partake in dragon communion eating dragon hearts, Placidusax ordered drakes to be made into sacrifices for dragon communion after Bayle betrayed him.
Also ancient dragons seem to all have "sax" or "seax" suffix in their name while that doesn't match with other types of dragons. We don't know why he is, but I think it's possible Bayle was trying to regain his lordship by killing Placidusax, but ultimately failed and fled with a few others who were still faithful to him.

To me it seems like a case of jellousy, bayle was born deformed with just 2 legs, 2 wings and a short neck.
While when Placidusax was born he was seen as blessed since his mutation gave him 5 heads.
Out of jelousy and bitterness that bayle was born like he is, he decided to fight Placidusax whos own deformity was seen as a blessing.

@maykomarquez The reason it's "Parroted" is because it's true. Miquella never had one fulfilled accomplishment of his own.
The needle never truly worked. It only stalled the Rot sickness. It was our Tanished that completely repelled the Frenzied Flame, by entering Placidusaxs domain and using the needle there. Not Miquella. His needles are incomplete.
The Haligtree is dying, split, and is now infested with Rot. It never reached its Zenith.

I mean, it literally is the shadow of the Erdtree. Marika hid the Land of Shadow with a giant magical veil, that is the projection of the Erdtree though that veil (in a more magical stuff sense, you know).
Its distorted and twisting shape is said to represent the emotions of the inhabitants of the Land of Shadow, forsaken and hurted.
It's quite interesting that it not only is not golden, but it drips sap. The Erdtree was supposed to look like a brown tree dripping golden sap during the Age of Plenty (you've even got a painting of it on a shield) and then stopped dripping and somehow became golden and ethereal (my crackhead theory is that Marika burned it, like in the painting in Roundtable, and remade it to be golden and dominated by the golden order, but that's a diferent rabbithole). Anyway, the similarities of the Scadutree to the Age of Plenty Erdtree suggest to me that the Scadutree is a shadow that maintains the aspect (although distorted) of the old Erdtree.

For the big dragon, i raise the idea of GIANT GIANTS FIGHTING DRAGONS (there are stupid huge bodies in the lands between so large weapons are a possibility.)
Also food for though, maybe Miqella did all this so that another godwyn event doesn't happen. He tried to do some eclipse and I'm pretty sure that didn't happen because Rahdan is holding the stars in place, and the sun is a star so the eclipse was destined to never happen and probably gave Miqella a cruel reality check that this world isn't right, giving him motivation to be a god and fix everything marika ruined.
And one more is that Miqella was destined to fail. Marika cursed her demigod children, to be whatever they wanted to be, be it a lord, be it a God, but if they fail to become either, they will be sacrifices. Not only that, but since Radagon and the Carian Royals were once wed and united, their fate was intertwined with the stars, so if Rahdan dies, failure is set in motion. By the time Miqella became a god, it was too late because so many demigod children started to die (assuming you killed Rahdan 3rd, making him the first of marikas children to die, godrick doesn't count)

    @KaramAshour-g1v 5 місяців тому +12

Hey, Elden Ring lore nerd here! I’m gonna attempt to solve each of these mysteries as best as I can:
    1) The dragon is likely a dragon similar to greyoll (although as shown by Zullie the Witch, it is much larger than greyoll), is a child of greyoll that grew to be much larger than her and escaped to the shadow realm, likely to avoid the drake warriors, such as us, but yet fell to the drake warriors of the shadow realm. I like to believe that that large weapon in the back of it’s head was either A) Used by the dragon god to kill this dragon or B) Was a harpoon fired from either a giant ballista of sorts or thrown with the strength of a thousand drake warriors (literally, as in a lot of drake warriors threw it there). It also is definitely NOT Florissax’s old form.
    2) I like to believe that the reason they duelled comes down to their names. The weak, feeble dragons of today are NOT called dragons, instead, they are called Drakes. Placidusax is the Dragonlord, and since Bayle is the father of all Drakes, he is likely a Drakelord of sorts. So this could’ve been due to a war of factions.
    3) With Zullie actually covered this in a video, and it turns out that these are actually boats of some sorts, which could explain why they are there.
    4) This one is quite obvious. His father was VERY likely Radagon. I mean, think about it, Malenia was cursed with rot, Miquella with youth, and since Messmer is a child of Marika and Radagon, the serpent inside him. It makes sense. It’s also likely that the furnace golems look like the fell god as a sort of MOCKERY towards Messmer’s father Radagon for abandoning him. As we all know, Radagon was cursed with his red hair by the giants, hence the reason he hated it.
    5) I have no idea whatsoever. I have done more research on this than you can imagine, and I genuinely have no clue. I think this is probably a job for a community effort.
    6) It is likely cut content and I don’t think that there is an “Age of Abundance” ending.
    7) I don’t think Radahn consented. It is likely miquella sent malenia to kill Radahn for the same reason WE kill him, so miquella can use him to ascend to godhood.
    8) The greater will likely abandons a lot because it has no reason to stay with us. I mean, why would it? It is confirmed by Ymir that a long time ago in space, the greater will and the frenzied flame were two parts of the same thing, and they split. The greater will causes suffering, while the frenzied flame burns the suffering away.
    9) The scadutree’s grace might be for a different purpose, but I still don’t know.
    10) Who said torrent is the ONLY spectral steed? There could be a bunch, they could be a whole bunch of them, like a specie of some sort.
Anyways, that is all. If I have made any mistakes, please correct me!

The thing that makes 4) confusing is Radagon and Marika having a child (or children we don't know when the younger sister was born to be fair) before Radagon and Marika were a known pair. Like it's kinda silly to think after Godfrey left Marika just popped out Messmer and Melina without a known Elden Lord and nobody questioned it. Then Radagon went off to have 3 kids with Renalla. Then Radagon came back and had 2 more documented children with Marika. The themes being the same is telling but it doesn't make the timeline any less confusing to me.

@@tha_juice3262 Yeah, I’ve also thought about this, and while I still DO think that 1) Melina IS the gloam-eyed queen and that 2) melina and messmer are siblings and 3) That their parents are Radagon and Marika, the mystery to me is WHEN it occurred, I have no idea when messmer and/or melina were born.

My theory on Messmer: The DLC trailer showing Marika ascending the bloody Divine Steps, and the mystery "shape" she is removing the threads of grace from is the eyelid of the Base Serpent. I wonder if she was consort to the base serpent during her machinations to Godhood, got pregnant, and killed the Elden Lord of the age, the base serpent at the gate of the Divine to ascend.

And so she went and seduced the serpent, got two kids, then betrayed the serpent and ascended. Seems to fit the seduction and the betrayal part of the trailer pretty well.

Bayle isn’t the oldest dragon. Not even close. Just the oldest of the DRAKES. The dragons with only 2 legs. All the ancient dragons like Placidusaax, Granssax, Florissax, Fortissax, And Lansseax are ANCIENT dragons. With 4 legs and 2 pairs of wings. Placidusaax lost 2 head and a pair of wings against Bayle. And he likely lost a fifth head a long time before that. Bc the dragonlord talisman shows placidussax with 4 heads but his model has 5 necks.

It's okay if you didn't pay any attention
      Ranni killed his fucking Soul.
      It's permanently dead.
Miquella's 'whole thing' was not to revive Godwyn.
It was to become the next God.
That motivation was borne of a desire to cure Malenia.
He tried to cultivate a new tree with his own blood and that failed.
And so he fell back on his plan to ascend to Godhood, but it requires a Lord.
And Godwyn obviously can't be his Lord anymore,
Castle Sol's failed Eclipse Ritual makes it explicitly clear that's not an option.
So he went with option number 2 : Radagon Boogaloo.

13:34 Regarding the shadow thing: shadows don't HAVE to be 2d. Strictly speaking shadows are projections of an object that show one dimension less than said object; so every shadow is 2d for us because we're only capable of perceiving 2d and 3d things. Since the Erdtree is this cosmically grand structure coming from outside the world , we very well might be able to see only one projection of it at a time. So the Erdtree and Scadutree would technically both be shadows to whatever the hell crashed into the Lands Between.

The coffins are positioned in such a way that they look like they fell there. And from an interview with Miyazaki he said something along the lines that "the shadowlands are the place Marika first set foot on" along with the cosmic nature of the story implies they literally traveled here in gigantic space faring coffins.
The shadowlands seem to be a sort of hell or underworld. A placard says all manner of death washes up on the shadowlands, the denizens seem to live burnt and shadowy lives. Messmer has satan like iconography, snakes, fire, and impalment. This along with the rune of death being removed implies that no one in the lands of shadow can truly die. An unending hell. I suspect that the shadowlands is also where the Helphen is. The hornset candles resemble the helphen.

In the beginning of the base game, I believe there is an NPC ghost that says something along the lines of a soul can enter the cycle of the Erdtree once they pass. However, those who are cursed, or live in death cannot enter the cycle of the tree. Here's my theory: The Erdtree was nourished with souls. Markia sacrificed all those people for their souls to make the tree sprout and grow. Ego: souls who live by the Shadow Tree are completely disconnected, and they cannot enter the cycle of Erdtree, so they are endless wonder in those dark forms in the DLC.
Perhaps the outer God wanted to consume the tree or a Fruit of the Tree, but Marika interfered with this plan by sealing death. All the people rotting away in the lands between seem almost unable to die of old age. Then the outer god abandoned the tree because it would never bear fruit with out enough souls.
The whole game, the grace is guiding us to destroy the tree, Radagon/Markia, and the beast that gives them their power.

If "seduction and betrayal" is used in the literal sense, could it be possible that the was another "first elden lord" before Godfrey? My thought is that, during her rise as an Empyrean in the Land of Shadow, she might have chosen an Elden Lord so she could gain access to the Gate of Divinity, and then played a double jeux to get what she needed, with the unknown object she is digging her hand into being their corpse. The lore is a bit difficult to keep track of, so correct me if I am blatantly overlooking something important

8:49 From what I understand what the DLC was trying to tell us is this: Everyone in the lands between is in some way some portion of a greater being, we each hold a bit of divinity. If you pile up a bunch of people together and fuse their very being in some messed up ritual well... you create something truly divine. I believe the gate of divinity is actually something close to either an offering to the god (we know Marika was a miko or shrine maiden/shaman) or it could be that the gate is some kind artificial god itself.

11:40 in an item description it's mentioned what Malenia whispered in Radahn's ear.
    "Miquella is waiting, O'Promised Consort."
If he totally consented to that, he wouldn't have the sheer force of will to stay alive in the Dunes, he would of let himself die to the rot. Even then, there would be no reason for them to fight.

15:50 I think this is during the battle between Radahn and Melania's forces, as the clean rot nights are all afflicted with scarlet rot, so they are capable of spreading it. As for Miquella healing the rot, the only thing I can say is that either Freya is tarnished, able to never truly die permanently from any ailment, and Miquella was able to heal her because of that, or scarlet rot needs a much more potent form of affliction. As in a stab or a high dosage or contact with scarlet rot, so getting bonked really wouldn't be a deep infliction, but getting stabbed, bitten, or walking through lakes of rot is.

I'd like to mention for 15:00 , in the dlc, there's a tower that has a slab at the top that says something like "this is the center of the lands between" even tho it's in the land of shadow, and when putting the dlc map over the base game map, it actually does seem to be close to the middle of both maps when put together, which makes you wonder, both maps must be connected in some way, even if it's minor like the land of shadow being the literal opposite of the lands between, like the empty ocean in the middle of the lands between

The best theory I've heard so far regarding Radahn's consent to being Miquella's consort is that he originally did consent, but then the shattering occurred, which essentially provided him his heart's desire: unending combat. As a result, he changed his mind regarding the vow, which is why Miquella had to send Melenia after him, and why he fought so fiercely against her. After the shattering he found his purpose and didn't want to just be a slave to Miquella.

I think Torrent being formerly owned by Miquella is a piece in a story about how Miquella influenced us from the start. At the Chapel of Anticipation, before we fall down the cliff, there are Nascent Butterflies in the spot we fall from, and as we go to grab them, we fall. We don't see Nascent butterflies again for a long time in the game, so this was clearly deliberate. Torrent was another means by which Miquella facilitated our journey. After all, why would he have put so many of his crosses near sites of grace if not for us to never miss them?
