  • A new cohort of military cadets has graduated. At National Defense University, more than 1,700 students from eight military academies celebrated at a joint graduation ceremony. President Lai Ching-te attended the event with his defense chief Wellington Koo and National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu.
    Cadets burst into applause to welcome President Lai Ching-te. At a joint graduation ceremony hosted by National Defense University, Lai outlined his defense chief’s plans for defense reform.

    Given that we can ensure military discipline, we will reduce unnecessary rules and weed out unnecessary procedures. Let us not be constrained by formalities, or be complacent with the status quo.
    More than 1,700 cadets from eight military academies graduated at Thursday’s ceremony. In his remarks, Lai thanked the supportive families in the crowd. He exhorted the cadets to dedicate themselves to the nation.

    As soldiers, you are committed to defending the nation. I hope that you all will forever remain loyal to your country, forever believe in democracy, and forever protect the people.
    After the ceremony, the grads gave each other their new rank insignias, as they prepared to embark on life’s next chapter. One grad said she was inspired by family to take this career path. Another hails from Taiwan’s formal ally of Belize.

    I am the first person from Belize to graduate from the R.O.C. Naval Academy. I’m very grateful to have had this opportunity to study in Taiwan for four years. Next up, I will train in Taiwan for three months. After three months, I will return to my country. I will miss Taiwan for sure.

    My father, brother, and sister are all service members who graduated from military academies. So I grew up in the culture. I hope to continue to follow in their footsteps.
