The letters themselves are sprites, but display based on a variable set in a specific bit of code. I've done mario romhacking myself, and anywhere there's text, you can't have MORE text than there was before, as doing so shifts bytes of data and changes locations of all the data afterwards.

+MrEvol94 Honestly, if you seriously liked Wario Land/Super Mario Land 3, you should really grab a Virtual Boy emulator and give the Virtual Boy Wario Land a shot! It's seriously the closest thing they ever released to WL/SML3 since they originally released that game...
Basically, imagine the Game Boy WL/SML3 -- complete with all the hat-based power-ups from the original GB game -- with better, widescreen, higher-res graphics and side-scrolling levels in a similar vain as the Game Boy game, except the levels now often have both a "foreground" and "background" portion which you can take doors or pipes to switch between, even often giving you multiple routes through a level, or switching you to the background to emphasize scenery in the foreground, for example.
