My friends, today we're look at strange places and liminal spaces in GoldenEye 007. It's time to stop looking down and start looking UP, to take in the beautiful sights! At least, for this video. And this time around, we can get even more clear video footage thanks to the new Xbox rerelease version of the game! I also share some speedrun stories, gaming analysis, and some folklore on the one and only "OGAR" strategy which has landed somewhere between meme and ancient legend when it comes to playing GoldenEye's Archives stage...
I've been influenced by other Nintendo 64 channels lately, exploring the wonderful worlds of N64 games and retro gaming, and so I want to make this video. I hope you enjoy my analysis and commentary, exploring these strange areas of a game I've spent so much time speedrunning over the years.

In the Egyptian room with the rectangle pool of water, the "reflection" is actually another room underneath. I tried painting the pillars, and their "reflections" for comparison when I was a kid.

What monster would shave in the shower? Someone has to clean that drain out y'know! Dehairing a drain sucks. I just let my beard grow as long as it wants anyway and the regular clippers I use on my head seem to work just fine in other places, or a razor, a little more caution is required, but better results!I once shaved my own and my partners, um, intimate areas completely with a straight razor, if you get cut you just suck at shaving! I'm no expert, but my girlfriend didn't feel anxious at all with me having such a sharp blade in such a sensitive area, so why should I fork out extra for manscaped?
Goose I’d love to see a video where you analyse the multiplayer levels! Never really seen anyone have an in depth look at them
^ This!
Yesss I just commented about the caverns multiplayer level.
Yep great suggestion
@@inthefade the Caverns multiplayer level always confused me. It isn't based on the caverns mission. It does have parts of Jungle in it's design though.
That would be perfect for this kind of video! They feel like such strange, liminal spaces if you play by yourself
You are the number one reason I can calm down in the evening it's hard for me in general so thank you
@Boco Corwin that will only exacerbate a person's problems in the long run
@Boco Corwin Try God instead.
@@TimeLierG L
@Boco Corwin anti depressant including that yeah, but it makes me too sleepy the next morning. The videos give me mental peace to comfortable relax and calm down forgetting the stressful day
@@TimeLierG Ugh. At least drugs are real.
My guess for the zoom weirdness is that it's a floating point precision thing; as your FOV decreases the angle:pixel ratio will also decrease (e.g. at an FOV of 70 degrees you've got a shade over 0.2 degrees per horizontal pixel, but at an FOV of 5 degrees you've got less than 0.02 degrees), so any minor errors caused by low precision FP calculations become more pronounced. Due to how relative Z coordinates are calculated, large polygons (the ground, the metal wall, etc.) will behave particularly oddly below a critical point leading to the disappearances/unwanted appearances, and the door and guard behaviour is likely related to them being instanced objects rather than baked into the world geometry - depending on where in the 3D>2D mapping the offsets are added they'll have an extra set of rounding errors thrown in to the mix. (The well behaved doors don't float up and down because they're just geometry not actual door objects, which is also why you can't even attempt to open them.)
No one does it like Goose. Thanks for years of positive and engaging content.
28:25 That interesting gentleman who looks like Santa Claus is Karl Marx
Indeed. There are posters of Stalin in the Archives as well. Both seem to be scanned, as both the Marx photo and Stalin poster are real
I remember my Dad laughing at me when I said it was a picture of Father Christmas. Then I got a lecture on communist theory. That's how I learned who Karl Marx is.
Or as he is known in Russia, Father Frost.
I, for one, would love to see this type of content as a mini series. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark have so many spots that I feel would be interesting to cover.
yes should do the whole game.
as well as perfect dark and super mario 64
Need a perfect dark one
This is one of my favorite series Goose. Please don’t stop. I even showed my girlfriend recently when you walked past the train and all the way down the tracks. That strange overcast skybox, the dark mountains, it’s eerie. But I’m drawn to it. Hard to describe.
The N64 tends to have these weird areas....
@@GamerFolklore outside of the main castle in Mario 64 comes to mind
Thanks for the mention in your video Goose - As far as the "OGAR" strat it had nothing to do with the secret passages in which I knew of both of these passages at the time ( I would use these secret passages with lookdown in multiplayer to hide from others as I was facing down at the floor and timing it right to pop out behind other players when they were "near" these secret passages and didnt know about them) - Now the OGAR strat Ace played on stream and didnt lure the guards properly with the "shooting lure" which didnt allow him to pass through one door opened as well as Mishkin door randomly also being opened - It was very random to have BOTH doors open (1 was ALWAYS OPENED with this shooting lure) of the OGAR route however IT IS POSSIBLE to have BOTH DOORS opened leading to Mishkin and the safe room with this shooting lure that happens to be shooting next to the outside courtyard - Would simply attract one of the guards on the given cut scene/path to open BOTH doors - Ace I think got a high :54 or at at the minimum :55 without even giving the strat much hardcore play (20 minutes on stream) and he wasn't even doing the shooting lure correctly nor did we actually take into consideration about which cut scene benefits this OGAR strat....food for thought although I do believe its at minimum .5 still slower then the WR strat/route I found to be faster in 1998
Aztec is the absolute king of liminal spaces for me. Especially when it's devoid of any guards. What a wild level.
Ah yes Karl Marx, known worldwide for being "that guy who looks like santa clause"
6:50 The light is actually a 3D shape with a semi-transparent white texture or something like that... so I'm guessing they had to make it part of the level model rather than a texture by itself. Love these videos!!
This isn’t a weird place or a liminal space but I thought it would be worth a mention. When I was a kid playing goldeneye I got a book from the local newspaper shop and it had all the type in cheats for goldeneye and it was cool to use invisibility during multiplayer, especially when doing it in front of another player because you get to watch your character fade out until they are completely invisible. They don’t turn in invisible Instantly but rather they fade gradually over a short period.
Wait that Santa guy was definitely Marx right?
I swear that door that isn’t a door on Runway, is having a Mandela effect on me. As a kid I swear I used to be able to go in there. There was a guard and the back of the turret gun. It’s so bizarre. Why do I have that memory? You could also see out the windows back out on to the runway. Creepy stuff.
That is literally the first I have ever heard of that! It sounds insane, but totally believable as a childhood memory. Thanks for sharing!
@@GamerFolklore thanks for the Goldeneye videos 😁
Also, this has inspired me to hook up my N64 and Goldeneye, and do some exploring myself. See if I can find some interesting locations. Used to do that as a kid, which was a big part of the experience. When I play, it’s usually a serious play through on secret agent. Turn on the classic cheats like invincibility, invisibility and all guns, and have some good, old fashioned 90’s fun. ❤️
I remember that also... Or maybe it's a placed memory.. probably thinking of that pillbox on dam?
@@DoYouKnowWhoKnew don’t think so, I’ve never been over there. Don’t know how to use game sharks or any of that stuff. All these years later it’s insane to see people have gotten over there. As a kid I remember wondering what the hell it was. Why was it there? Used to zoom in with the sniper rifle. One day I’d love to actually go there myself. That would be so cool. Now of course I know it was scrapped as an accessible area of the level, but back then I was baffled.
I love the description of Karl Marx as "This interesting looking gentleman here that kind of looks a bit like Santa Claus"
I didn't know about the knolly bush or the sniper rifle glitch on runway. Amazing to still be learning new things about the game after so many years of playing it!
I was wondering if that was Marx or not. Thanks
I was laughing out loud when he said it looked like Santa Claus. 😂 I hope/wish Goose did that on purpose as a joke, as it is funny.
It might be mostly nostalgia but goldeneye did always give me vibes of like a welcoming relaxed quick visit to some kind of office or doctor or something. You go use their restroom and overhear all the stuff going on in there with no context lol.
Long time viewer, first time commenter: I am blown away right now by the "OGAR" passageway in Archives. I knew about the hidden passageway in the room with the DD44 guards, but had never discovered that other one. To think I spent countless hours exploring every level in this game and there are STILL things I haven't seen. Incredible. Thank you for doing what you do, Goose!
goose idk how you do it man. i hope you milk goldneye content forever.
also the "door" on runway (15:00) reminded me of when i used to make and edit Doom maps... i would sometimes include recesses in the wall and texture them with things, like a door texture just to avoid monotony. i think its just as simple as that door just being a 2d texture OF the door on a flat plane, rather than a 3d sector that has been stripped of its actions.
good ol DoomEd
Honestly, didn't know there was a second secret passage on archives just the one with the boxes, I inspected a lot of the maps like this as a kid and always wondered what was behind locked doors as a kid then when I got gameshark it was sad to see that it was just unfinished maps or just wasn't more of the map programed in.
Who doesn't love seeing a brand new Goose upload? :D
Only fools.
Hey Goose, just a wonder, but why don't you make as much Perfect Dark content as you do GoldenEye?
i always felt the liminal ambience of golden eye in n64. im glad you made a video on this in such a detailed way, ty!
That Snata Clause looking gentleman on Archives certainly has that gift giving look to him. Good find Goose, I had no idea he was there
Cirquet's channel is really cool, it's amazing how they'll post stuff I've never even noticed in games that I've played through a dozen times before.
Explore perfect dark's liminal spaces! That game has a TON. They're everywhere in solo missions and multiplayer.
There's so many! Air force one is of particular interest, there's so many little rooms and offices that are unused
I love how you’re still finding things in 2023. You keep this game alive and I think I speak for everyone when I thank you for that 🙏
you should check out the area in PD where you get the last objective before rescuing dr carroll in investigation.
there seems to some kind of water area below which doesn't make much sense in a high rise tower in chicago.
Another quality Goose upload. I always watch your videos on my second monitor while I game or code. Congrats on 100k I missed that!
Damn 59 minutes ago, I just discovered goose and I thought this was an old one I had missed
Also I’ve been a fan of any Austin for awhile, mainly for his “egg busters” episodes
Awesome stuff! There s something fascinating about how these old 3d games are constructed. I remember clipping out of bounds in some game on the N64 and feeling like I had stumbled into an alternate dimension ha. Also another ep you could do is for super Mario 64, those fish tanks, so many urban myths growing up about what is behind them
28:25 "We see here's this interesting gentleman here, kinda looks a bit like Santa Claus." Ahahahahahaha
Another brilliant and interesting Goose video! It Just Keeps Happening!!!!
Hey Goose, in the past I've hacked the sniper zoom value and when going too far, it seemed to do that effect you see in the factory at 11:11. I tried in the level Streets. But I had no idea you could do it in-game with no hacks. Awesome stuff.
One thing that always interested me about that Dam hallway was the red light on the ceiling. The texture on it is really weird. You have to be aiming at the *exact* right angle to shoot it out, otherwise the bullets will always go right through it.
Hearing "my friends" is how you know it's gonna be a good day.
It just
keeps
happening
"To notice and appreciate that which may be often overlooked, one must stop on occasion to smell the roses."
When I was a kid, I remember the knolly grass area of Streets, I used to pretend that there were people in it just hanging around.
Back then 3d games all pretty much kept you inside a prison
28:25 Who would have thought the KGB were fans of santa clause?
Surely he realises its a depiction of Karl Marx..?
Can't believe you made a liminal spaces video 6! Months ago. Time flies. Enjoy the content. New graphics are scary and unfamiliar ooooo
Love your work here, i was into "liminal space" decades before its time lol... keep em coming man, im totally ready for more
I honestly find it positively funny how happy/excited you get for looking at a flat tree wall for 10 minutes haha, because i'd do the same. My brother would just don't care, say its just a tree, it looks like s*** or tell me to shut up.. but I honestly enjoy seeing how some things in games are programmed/mapped even if you don't see them or should not be able to go there. I admit I didnt know about most of these, like the trees in Street, I think it's an awesome coverage video of those weird things ! :)
keep up the good work !
22:00 makes me wonder what the collective noun (a murder of crows, a gaggle of geese, etc.) for a group of Dwaynes, clustered in one room together, should be? A... homeliness of Dwaynes? Awesome vid btw.
Really interesting video. I totally forgot about the second secret passage on Archives!
I would absolutely watch a similar series on Perfect Dark.
Gooses love for goldeneye is contagious
I've always been fascinated by a hallway on the in-accessible second story of the lobby of twine's first level. I was thinking about that through the whole video and it was an interesting coincidence when you mentioned that game here. I'd love to see that video get made
I played through Twine the other day, and it is definitely really weird. I don't know exactly which pathway you're referring, but if I turn it back on, I'll try to find it!
Goose's Gamer Folklore literally the very first room that you start the game in. Just look up and to the left. There's a balcony above the lobby and a hallway that turns out if view. Always captured my imagination as a kid
Recently just started playing through Goldeneye for the very first time myself, after watching your speedlore and videos for many years. Thanks for the all of the great content mate !
Your videos make me appreciate Goldeneye more and more with every new upload.
"The metal sheet comes for ye all"
Favourite quote so far
God damn I will NEVER get tired of any of Goose's content.
Shoutouts to any Austin!
Great vid solid inspiration
Caverns is the most mysterious level to me. It's always the furthest back in my mind when thinking of the levels but has one of the most unique vibes.
I enjoy so much these videos... And yes please do more!
So nice to see the upload date “Xd ago”. A real treat seeing new GoldenEye content in 2023. 😊
Goose keep these videos coming man! i never get tired of watching your perspective on goldeneye and perfect dark content ill be watching your videos until you stop making them!
I had no idea those secret passageways in Archives even existed!
"architexture" did you invent that goose? Genius.
Enjoyed the video Goose. Like always. Would love to see you make one on The World is Not Enough. Looking forward to the next one
Would love to see a video exploring all the signs and posters in the archived and any other level. Would love to see you take a look at all the statues in statue for example. Keep up the great work goose!
Those 4 guards each have a computer to play an Unreal Tournament LAN party.
N64 and ps1 have my fav graphics, n its fun seeing stuff in new ways . It's why I also loved the DS library so much when they'd go n make full 3D
Absolutely love this format :)
Thanks Goose your videos help me wind down to sleep.
Goose I really liked the speedlore play through of Goldeneye on Xbox. I thought maybe you’d be interested in the Tomorrow Never Dies romhack of Goldeneye? Might be a fun play through for that channel. Great video as always- haven’t finished it yet haha
Side note: I believe there’s a walk through doors GameShark code. I remember turning that on and another code to investigate the island on dam
for the longest time when I'd get into that radio room, the guards would always manage to blow everything up before I really even got a chance to get to the radio. it took me a while to learn how to stealth in properly so I could kill them all before any explosions occurred
I had no idea that that's what those poles were for, and I've been playing this game for years, would love to see PD or Mario Golf even, anything you have experience playing
Placing time stamps around the ad. GOAT
I'm gonna get to the back of Goose's runway if he keeps up this quality content
Yo Goose, you covering some The World Is Not Enough would be a joy. That game was the N64's Bond for me as a kid and back then I put an absurd amount of hours into it, I can assure you there'd be lots of oddities and atmosphere for people who are less familiar with TWINE than GoldenEye to discover.
Bro i love this series. Anything you put out really. My favorite is the pokemon snap stuff. Im a huge fan of the game, still play on my og hardware, share some tied wrs. Its really special to see current content on something so obscure yet so very dear to me.
Youre a legend
I would love to see every game you mentioned at the end, love your content!
25 years later and I’m just now learning about the secret hallways in Archives, good stuff!
Any Austin is the man, I discovered you first then him. Love both of your channels. Seeing you combine the ideas is so awesome
In the caverns it makes sense that its a drainage pipe.
its practically hanging from the ceiling and has water below.
similar to dam we are learning a lot about drainage.
remember the cradle was underwater as well in the movie.
In the beginning I had no idea what the last one could be.. until I saw the sky and knew immediately it was on "that level", what a level does to some of us lol! I only thought there was a hedge on the fence there so that shocked me, my favorite has to be the caverns bridge/tunnel out of these. Legit bewildered me, great vid!
Great vid, especially liked the final entry. Part 2 with a game shark next time? :)
What music did you use during the Dam Basement section? Sounded really cool!
Absolutely would like to see more. Def enjoy Any Austin's work, the goofy bastard
Congrats on 100k subs!
Congrats on 100k !!!
Great vids about my greatest childhood game!
When the intros end, and it all begins, we buckle up! - Road trip!
There's something incredibly funny about Goose calmly and precisely passing away that guard while explaining the modem objective.
He did something similar to that in his recent video "Exploring GoldenEye's Weirdest Glitch on Xbox!" - that video has a scene where he causes the "floating mines" glitch on Bunker 1 by blowing up some computers, and he seems to time this so that he kills as many guards as possible in the process, lol.
This is one of your best videos.
Just another exquisite detail of game design that these relative unknowns innovated over 25 years ago. Their unbridled ambition and unmatched vigor propelled them to the hallowed pantheon of game design legend. Who knew that this afterthought of a movie-based game would over-time excel itself in ways hitherto undreamt of? Ancient Gods and otherworldly beings must all bow in reverence to these avatars of mere mortaldom. The world is a more interesting place because of GoldenEye 007 (c) and humans are more soulful and enriched because of these two young and relatively unknown men from Twycross. Their spirits will surely forever alight the beacon of hope for all humanity.
You can take out the guard who’s walking around through the vent on Dam when you’re above ground. It just takes a minute for him to pass underneath you.
oh wow I've never noticed the tunnel in Caverns! I absolutely always thought that was just a section within the inner cavern! mind totally blown!
In Archives, it’s funny how they put the body armour in the area where they tie people up and shoot them lol
Cool video man, keep it up.
One mission that would be interesting to look for liminal spaces would be Jungle. Such a weird environment.
more liminal spaces? I'm here for it.
I play these vids before bed, i love Goldeneye!
"This Gentleman here looks a little like Santa Claus"
**Looks at picture of Karl Marx**
I suppose there is a resemblance, in a way. Though instead of kids, giving gifts to the good little proletarians and not the naughty bourgeoisie.
I'd like to see this type of video, but with the XBLA versions of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.
I feel like it should be possible to use the tank during speedruns on Streets;
you actually do move faster when you drive the tank as opposed to running, so the trick there is mostly about destroying any cars and other obstacles before you drive over them, or at least enough obstacles so that it ends up being faster than running.
I knew of all these places & things because when i first played goldeneye, I was so young & awful at it that I couldn’t follow the objectives or navigate the maps properly - I would have my cousins set up the invincibility cheat for me & approached the game more as a leisurely tour simulator.
The game looks so much crisper or the Xbox. Thanks for the interesting tour.
I think it's interesting nobody talks about how the end of streets is just the edge of the level. Like a cliff into a void.
“Sterling Neblett” sounds like one of those names where the main character rearranges the letters and it spells out something plot relevant.
Actually knew of the secret passages back in my era of speed running - It definitely brought that nostalgia of "wolf 3d" or "doom" secret doors to secret areas into play however goldeneye really didnt have meaning behind these secret passages shown here in Archives - Now the "OGAR" strat was the original mainline WR and really only .5 seconds off the WR line today IF you can get BOTH doors opened with a shooting lure - All the strat is was going LEFT at Natalia's door (opening the door to the left prior to opening Natalia's door which completes the objective) so the left door would be opened and going this route down to Mishkin - There was a "shooting" lure I used going down the stairs just after Natalia's door we open which I would shoot at the top of the stairs here to lure the guards from the OUTSIDE COURTYARD to open the doors near Mishkins room as well as the one before Mishkins room - The door outside of Mishkins room would ALWAYS be opened with this "shooting lure" and Mishkins room door was very random to ALSO be OPENED with this shooting lure - This was an early "shooting lure" in the infancy of the game which never gets talked about because the mainline WR is just a different route with NO shooting lure however this OGAR was known and broke the 1:00 barrier w 1.1 control style anyway - The route became obsolete when I figured out the other route was faster which became the WR mainline still used today in speed running (one of a few speed run levels that the strat rarely changed since 1998 - The shooting lure was too random to have BOTH doors opened on a run which seemingly only puts this strategy .5 behind the current mainline WR...which in itself speaks volumes in speed running terms to have 2 routes land at :54 seconds (53 being the WR on SA and OOA difficulties)
