As a manga reader, it feels so weird to be reviewing the anime right now based on only the parts that have released. Seeing someone say that Dungeon Meshi doesn't have good character work feels almost blasphemous - Laois is one of the most interesting and compelling protagonists in the entire fantasy genre, but one actually has to get to the parts about his character to know that. Dungeon Meshi is starting slow and light-hearted because it needs to take time establishing the basic setting and concept before it goes into detail about world-building and character-building, but once that work has been done it's nothing but excellent character work and excellent world-building. Definitely don't expect this series to be Konosuba; it may be comedic, but it veers into things like heartbreak and tragedy as well. And maybe a little bit of horror. Just give it time; it's a slow burn.
Seems like you gotta rewatch the video then because I went at lengths to say that the characters are good fun and well developed. I said underutilized, as illustrated in the video, in regards to the comedy. Slow burns are fine, but this is middling. It may get better later on, but my entire point in that criticism segment is that everyone's mileage will vary because of that. It has a setting and characters fit for Konosuba chaos, but it doesn't use them properly as that's not what it's going for; however, because of the adaptation going mostly 1:1 rather than speeding things along, it leaves that lingering feeling that it's not really doing much of all with them. In a manga that's fine. In a weekly anime it's not. Even then it isn't bad, it just could be better. Doing a "review" (it really isn't one) this early on is fine because I'm criticizing what we currently have and the pace at which it's going. If it "gets better" -- most things don't but this seems like it will -- then that's less on it and more on the adaptation.
@To-To I don't really get why the standard would be inherently different for manga vs anime. Generally I'm not a fan of the changes people usually make to have an anime feel like it's "moving". Some stories are just slower with less extreme characters - that's a personal preference. I think slower stories can work animated, people are just less used to that (by convention) so it feels weird to them.
@@IronicHavoc having a slower series is fine and can work, but it’s the pacing the anime has to get right. Manga and anime are two drastically different mediums, and what works in one won’t always work in another. If I’m reading Dungeon weekly and Laois and the fan got up to some goofy antics, I’m gonna laugh and tune in next week. It took me all of 5 minutes to read. But an anime is 24 minutes. In three weeks I’m watching an hour+ of material vs reading 15 minutes of it, so if not paced properly or firmly presenting what it’s about - adding in more comedy, for example, or getting the comedic timing down in the first place - then it can feel too slow, boring, etc. Dungeon Meshi, from what I’ve seen, seems to have been improving on that front, but I’m not caught up atm so can’t say for certain.
@@To-ToI mean that's why I don't watch anime weekly. I either chunk out an episode about the pace I would a chapter or binge it when it's a large chunk is available. That is a habit I've developed by reading manga, but I don't think it's an issue inherent to the "medium" - just the convention by which it's produced and distributed. I would like more anime to feel like they can just make a series of short digestible stories like a manga chapter, and I agree that would work better for this story. But I understand that industry conventions exist for a reason.
I'm personally surprised to hear that people didn't love the jokes in the initial episodes. Makes me wonder if the reviewer watched the english dub instead of the japanese dub or something. The JP voice acting makes the punchlines and gags legendary.
@@CarlosAlberto-gf3dy | This, too. The fact that so many female characters in anime can be defined in one word like "tsundere" or "yandere" REALLY defines the problem.
This anime doesn't need to have the chaotic energy of konosuba and it actually does have a plot it just hadn't gotten to the good bits yet. Very unfair to do a review of it right now.
It doesn't need a plot and the addition of one wouldn't change much. It's a character focused show through and through, and that's OK. It's issue is that the characters are A+ material, but the jokes don't always land well. Having it be more chaotic could fix that, and the situation and characters lend themselves to that, was my point. I'm not saying it NEEDS to do those things, I'm just pointing out an issue it has and making a suggestion to fix it. It could very well fix it as it goes on, but it hasn't yet. I also made it clear that it was how I personally felt, for the most part anyway, rather than an objective flaw.
@@To-To its not that it doenst need one IT HAS ONE that the anime is getting to slowly. The addition of the more serious plot and world building adds so much more to the story. The anime has already foreshadowed a certain character you'll see later. This is a DND story before a comedy anime keep that in mind.
@@To-To The show is not focused on the comedy like KonoSuba though. You're comparing different anime. It has funny moments but KonoSuba is comedy/satire for 80+%. This one's comedic bits are much less prominent. It's adventure/fantasy SOL. There is nothing to fix plot- or theme-wise. The art style discrepancies from episode to episode is what I'd say bothers me the most. "It doesn't need a plot and the addition of one wouldn't change much". That would work only if it was a comedy, like KonoSuba, with each episode being its own thing, mostly. It is not. It's a low-ish magic D&D adventure. I'd tell you to read the manga, which is complete in ~120 chapters, but judging by your comment above, this is not what you're interested in.
@@To-ToIdk man, I find mundanity with just a little bit of weirdness a lot funnier than outright nonsense. Especially when we start encountering more "normal" characters in the dungeon and the fact that basically everyone besides Chilchack is a weirdo starts to become more pronounced by contrast. Laios and Senshi are some of my favorite comedic characters. The comedy worked for me even early on .I.e. the Orcs/Kelpie/Living Armor/Mermaids etc. were all in the first 16 chapters. Though obviously humor is pretty subjective. Either way, even people who didn't care for the first 3 volumes got into it after what happens in volume 4 onwards. But that might be season 2, which isnt even confirmed. Either way I'm glad it got animated if only for those aforementioned moments really liked.
@@To-To That dates back to when these Trigger Artists were Gainax artists. Cheap out on certain episodes so they can abuse the budget on other episodes. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, the precursor to what is the current Trigger style, is arguably one of the best animated anime ever. There were 3 distinct episodes that clearly were the low budget episodes. At this point, we can see that this rule definitely continued into this anime.
Yeah I can't in good faith call anything made by Trigger "Cheap.". Dungeon Meshi's artstyle is very recognizable and unique, it's also very simple and if you read the manga you can see how Trigger ripped Dungeon Meshi straight from the pages of the manga. It's accurate to the source material and what they did add to the series, primarily being in Action Scene's, is masterful. Calling it "Cheap" is, kinda a terrible take lol
"Lacks a deep forward moving plot to think on or characters that push the boundary of their genre and/or delve into existential thoughts." This is actually hilarious how exactly wrong this is XD - It's a reasonable misconception to have if you're anime-only and have only seen the first 1/4-ish of the story so far, but I hope you stick with the show to witness how far it goes beyond the simple comedy that you think it is at this stage (in fact there have already been some early hints)!
Thanks for understanding! A lot of people have misconstrued this as a review of the entire series, when it’s really just a “review” of what we have so far, in which case it’s apt. It may very well change, in which case I’m likely to make another video just like I did for Frieren.
@@To-To With this story, odds are you're going to have to make multiple! Ryoko Kui (manga author+artist) is a genius, and the story has layers... Or no, should I say *courses?*
the show has a plot since the first episode: resucing the sister, that is slowly devouered by a dragon. yes the start seems realy goofy and often laid back but it is still good. the later episodes actually geting realy dark. that is partly because death is not a permanent condition, so you can get into more brutal moments. but especialy by the time they did find the dragon later, the show is going to quite some dark places, that seems unusual for a show, that started like they did.
Plot in the Western ideal doesn't quite exist as the focus in Japanese storytelling, essentially, the world building IS the plot. That doesn't mean that Eastern stories lack "plot", it just isn't the main feature of what is considered a story culturally. Western stories have plot as the central feature of the story, they fundamentally introduce it at the first act of the story. Eastern stories are more about theme and aesthetics, as the format of Eastern stories come from poetry, plot isn't nearly as important as premise does, settings, characters, etc. Often, plot as a feature comes later, and is not exactly the fundamental reason for the story to exist, interestingly, this means that for a plot to exist, Japanese audiences expect the world to be made first so that plot can sprout within it.
Eh??? Dungeon meshi has been one of the most fun and refreshing animes Ive seen in a long time... the animation is beautiful and solid, and I find myself ingrossed in whatever weird thing they find to eat next. Maybe Im biased because Im a cook myself, but this anime is an instant favorite for me.
Death is absolutely *not* trivial in this world. Not only are resurection spells not guaranteed to work, if you're missing more than 1/13th of your body you are COMPLETELY gone. Which, given that Falin is being DIGGESTED, makes the haste to get to her *absolutely* warranted. And man, saying that the manga should be "filled with the chaotic energy of Konosuba" really rubbed me the wrong way lol. The entire strenght of the show is tonally juggling the comedy with the, honestly rather gruesome, world it's set in. I understand that the anime has not gotten to the point where it'd disprove these points, but if you are calling back to the manga and suplementary material in the same video, is a bit hard to ignore the blatant misinformation in it.
It’s based off D&D and they’re in no particular rush to save his sister, despite mentioning it a few times. If they are in a rush, the anime does a poor job at showing it, but considering how callous they are about, it seems like death isn’t the biggest deal in the world. “Saying the manga” I didn’t say that. I haven’t read the manga. This is a video on the anime, and from what I’ve seen, yes it could benefit from it. I also stated that that’s also just my personal taste given how the setting presents itself. Again, if the world is “awful and gruesome” they don’t do the best job at showing it, at least not yet. It’s not “misinformation” it’s my thoughts on the show. I didn’t consider the fact that putting the manga in the video may have insinuated that u had read it, so perhaps that’s my b, but the entire point was to illustrate what the anime adaptation was doing and visually illustrate what I was saying.
@@To-To I wasn't saying that you read the manga, I was saying that mentioning the manga and suplementary material in the video gives the impression of such. I think people that read the manga realize you're doing a first impressions based on the anime but it can give people that are watching your review first a wrong impression. I will give you one thing though. Both in the manga and the anime, they really don't make it seem like they are in a rush to get to Falin outside of one talk with the orcs. That's a legit failing on the work and I think the anime could have added some lines to smooth it out. As for the world being gruesome, yeah that's only going to actually be shown after the first arc, my point was that not everything is trying to be like Konosuba so to say that it "should" be chaotic when that's not what the manga is trying to do, at all, is kind of in bad faith.
@@To-To I guess but why does everything have to become smut? Can’t that stuff be separate from normal stuff. The reason anime has become less enjoyable (imo) because it has a problem of blurring those lines and it ends up being alienating to its audience who want non smutty shit.
Laios DOES care about his sister! You are just ignorant of the fact that in order for him to have his sister resurrected, they need her body! It's also explained that the only reason that ressurection magic can work on bodies that have been dead for a while, is that the dungeon that they entered makes it so that peoples souls are tethered to their bodies for longer. There IS, a need for rushing and for the character to get the body! Laios isn't just a lunatic! You've actualy had the same misunderstanding of Laios that a lot of side characters get where they believe his willingness to eat monsters and his own focus on his hunger are the signs of a deeply evil person.
Spoiler alert ‼️ You are both right. Laios DOES care about Falin… but he’s a psychopath that cares about monsters a teeny bit more. This was explained in the final chapters of the manga. Serious SPOILER ALERT ‼️ DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE MANGA The main villain curses Laios to never achieve what he wishes for the most. He and the others were st first worried that this meant they would never be able to resurrect Falin… but they succeed, to their shock. It turns out, all monsters are now afraid of Laios and will run away whenever he gets near. His dearest wish is to be able to be closer to monsters. So… his psychopathy is what saves the day in the end. 😂😂😂
@@fakephan yes he does 😂 However, (SPOILER) When they meet the immortal citizens of the Golden Kingdom/Country, they discover that those people have been using monsters as part of their agriculture. They even allowed Laios to milk one of their minotaurs. 😬 So for those brief hours, Laios was able to be close to his beloved monsters. 😂
@@ArtemisRahl15 You got some details a tad wrong methinks. Laios exibits none of the signs of psychopathy, he experiences emotions and form relationships normally. He does feel remose, love, and hate just like anyone does and can even empathize with people he meets in just a short while. Calling him a psychopath is a diservice to his entire character. If anything he's closer to a neurodivergent or autistic person than someone who lacks the ability to connect with other people entirely. You are making the same mistake most people in the anime made about his character, those who judged him before even knowing him. Laios finds monsters fascinating because his interactions with fellow humans were always tainted by their prejudice of his diferring mindset. They called him a wierd kid, his peers builled him, tear up his books, literally beat him black and blue, shunned his sister, and it eventually led to him falling out with his own parents. The reason Laios doesn't like humans is not because he don't see value in human life, he just had a negative view from his own experiences. Take for example, Sureau, Laios always thought him as his friend and was extremely friendly to him. Not knowing that Sureau actually found him annoying despite not ever meaning any malice behind it. Just like how most autistic people would find something to fixate upon and admire, Laios chose his love and appreciation of monsters as his fixation. He did it because it made him happy, nothing more, nothing less. Calling him a psychopath just because he's not "normal" just feels... very wrong imo. Not only does it grossltly misinteprets the struggles of people who actually suffers from psychopathy, you kinda unintentionally just called him and people like him freaks just because he's a little different.
I mean, no not really. The character focus is still a point that remains throughout and, no matter what it does differently, it won’t change that the first 5-6 eps this video covers were exactly that way.
@@IronicHavoc I prefer it to stay that way, to be honest. My only real complaint was that they weren’t making effective use of the characters innate goofiness and were playing it safe, not that it was slow in general. I’ve been told that changes tho. I liked Laios scaring the mermaids away personally, but did not enjoy the whole second half of ep 2 or 3 that was focused on Senshi and Chuck. Don’t really like Senshi all that much tbh
I'm gonna find everyone who ever says that "Laios only cares about eating" and put them all in a hydraulic press. Because he really does care about saving his sister. Its just the fact that you can revive people who died in the dungeon is possible, so he's a little more relaxed about it. Although there is a time limit so they can't spend time getting food and supplies. Which means he gets to check off "Eating every monster in the Dungeon" from his bucket list at the same time
@@mastermuffles7097 1) watch my other video, 2) his sister does ultimately perish as a result of his lackadaisical attitude. She’s only brought back through dark magic
overall I liked this review but I entirely disagree on some of the criticism's specifically with how you describe some episodes as "dragging" or not utilizing the characters as much as they should. Personally im really fucking tired of anime with ridiculous characters and non stop loud jokes and "gremlin" energy. I like dungeon meshi's pacing and character moments cause they feel like actual people and not just personality traits blown out of proportion.
Virgin isekais: hologram shits, leveling systems, unrealistic out of nowhere inventories, gates, op, self insert characters, ofc harem. Just how you expect from this generation that all they do is gaming. Dungeon meshi: no video game shitty aspects, characters are adults, realistic monsters and foodchains, not overflashy spells, no annoying blushes, gold quality comedy. Really a peak fantasy that not made by nerd gamers
I disagree, the mangaka of DunMeshi Ryoko Kui is a HUGE gaming nerd, she's often cited games like Divinity Original Sin or Baldur's Gate as her inspiration for Delicious in Dungeon In fact she's even done fanart of those games in her own artstyle
well it does get quite some ideas from dnd in general. it just adds on top of it with explaining the ecosystem and how it changes, when certain things start to happen, like death not being permanent
I used to like the isekai concept and video game system, but now it’s so totally overused. Can we have some actual fucking fantasy? (Yes, we can! It’s right in front of me!)
I actually don’t mind this surface interpretation of dungeon meshi because that’s the early experience with the story people have - it starts rather simple and then drags you into a rabbit hole, so I don’t see an objective reason to jump in and say that it is a bad review. It is true that dungeon meshi goes into topics more and more complex as story goes on… but it still stays silly. Manga readers here who would claim they did not have a single moment of “should I laugh or should I not” because situations were both serious and hilariously dumb are just liars. It is a dungeon story - first levels are cheerful music and running mushrooms whilst bottom layers are haunting music and horrors, story will get there. Being soooo damn unaware of what’s ahead is one of these great things about dunmenshi as a story, telling new readers/watchers to treat it like if they know everything is just lame. This story stays fun and goofy all the way through, even exploring it’s main theme deep and broad. It has a world with it’s own history and rules, makes characters go through horrors and still stays the same tale about a group of goofy individuals eating things no one in their right mind would.
That's how I typically approach things. Regardless of what the anime becomes later on, this "review" is what it was in the first couple of episodes. Typically with anime, big sweeping changes don't happen in 12 eps anyway, but this is 24 eps long so I'm likely to revist it in another video later on. Mango harvesters getting upset because I said it's underutilizing its characters are not incorrect to say "it gets better as it goes" but I agree that the ones who are denying that the characters aren't insane goofballs are just being silly lol. Glad you understand.
I'm enjoying the anime, but it's definitely adapting the weakest part of the source material as of now. I hope Trigger ramp up the production when the story gets more interesting later on (around episode 12-13) because the manga goes from a silly cooking show to a very well-thought-out story with actual stakes
I keep telling my friends that, but I can't help but be worried that they'll be bored by this part of the show I'm enjoying is a ton tho, it's honestly a miracle we even got a Dungeon Meshi anime so I'm going to relish every second of it
It kinda reminds me to TTGL a bit. First few episodes while bloody and lots of bodycount, they're still light-hearted. Then BAM, Kamina dead, the stake grew higher, the story get deeper
I actually wasn't aware the series was gonna be 2-cour (24 eps) at first lol. I made the video to encapsulate my thoughts at the time, but also because I assumed it was only 12. Anime don't change drastically in any metric of quality in 6 eps -- since I made this at, like, ep 5 or 6 I think -- and if they do change in a second season then, well, it's a second season that probably came out a year later lol Not the case with 24 ep anime. They can very easily completely flip their script or find their footing with the extended runtime, or even completely ruin themselves depending on the show, so I'll almost definitely be doing another video on it next season.
i feel like this is the common perception of him 🙈 i only just started watching (and will be reading through manga too), but i saw enough memes and posts on twitter that let me get a feel for the story before i had even consumed it.
"It doesn't focus on deep existential thoughts." Hahahahahaa! You clearly have NOT read the manga. 'The consumptive nature of desire as a product of being-in-the-world: an anti-Buddhist analysis'is a fitting ' is an apt academic paper folks ought t write on this series
I usually only read manga for gore and porn, but Dungeon Meshi lack that but somehow I can't stop reading it, this is the first time after 10 years I feel joy reading again
What I really love about this anime and the manga is that all characters have not only unique but belivable designs. No irrational amount of muscle or boobs so huge they have their own gravity. And everyone is dressed up! (Well... except that one elf guy but he has a good excuse.)
If it feels like the story could be doing more with the obvious care and detail put into the world building, and hitting complex character notes. That's because it definitely does hit those things later on down the line. I don't want to spoil things, but I would encourage you, anime-watchers, to consider this question as the anime progresses: "What does each character *want*?"
I hope you don’t get discouraged from continuing this series, this genuinely has been one of the most refreshing fantasy mangas I’ve read in the modern age. It’s beloved so the community gets passionate about defending it, It’s true though that the review is a bit shallow atm (due to u being anime only + the start being the weakest part of the story, which is saying a lot cuz even then the start is pretty great!) but you were explicit about being anime only rn so it’s okay. If ever you do manage to be updated with dungeon meshi I’d love to hear your new review on it again. Great character dynamics, genuine relationships, Lowkey dark history and setting, mixed with comedy, an interesting plot and racial system and some of the best character design I’ve seen from anime in awhile (non fanservicey female characters too is always a plus in my book) It’s a unique story made with love that deserves to be delved deeper into to fully appreciate.
I actually dropped it after this review since it wasn't my thing, but my next, next video will be on it again, and since that's probably going to drop in the next few weeks, I'll likely be catching up with over the next couple days. You'll definitely get my updated thoughts soon!
Man, knowing the place is this series goes, All the false beliefs that there's no overarching plot and no boundary pushing in the genre is going to age like milk 😂😂
It's part of the dungeon meshi experience, it makes you think you found something light-hearted and casual, but it's actually a trap, just like the dungeon 😂
I love this anime because ti feels like an anime version of D&D. I am a DM for a few campaigns, and let me tell you, the things the party does and thoughts they talk about is something extremely similar to what goes on in a D&D campaign. Recently, the new party was experimenting with lycantrophy and one even got slightly infected, resulting in her having claws for a few days. She was so pissed that she burned the two remaining werewolf to death rather than beating to an inch of their life and cure them as they talked about. Which she did because with those claws she got it would be harder for to do some tinkering. The others then talk about seeing if they can be cured from lycantrophy even if they are dead
Ryoko Kui (the mangaka) took a month-long hiatus when Baldur's Gate III dropped. I'm pretty certain the math-rock brainrot has got her by the throat lmaooo
Dungeon meshi be like: A autistic guy wants to eat anything A guy thinks he knows anything An immature mostly useless Elf The chef (The coolest guy) And a cat. (hummie cat) ntgl This characters is good.
Calling this anime cheap looking doesn’t make much sense as the quality changes depending on who animated it and what episode they were working on. I love the artsyle more than anything trigger has done before. Also Laios does care about he’s sister but also wants to eat monsters you clearly misunderstood his character.
@@szkraft220 ah I could see how you thought that then. The bit at 0:46 was a joke which is why I said “in all seriousness” right after lol I should probably add subs to my vids
“Making the characters look very similar to actual human builds which is extremely disappointing” *zooms in on marcilles chest* I was already thinking this review was pretty bs but that sealed the nail in the coffin
No, I feel the video makes it obvious that I'm only talking about the first 6 or so eps, and likewise a video on an anime typically ignores the manga outside of brief comparisons.
I find Japanese comedy to usually be a little too busy at times. While they can no doubt be fun constant back to back jokes muddy the water. Dungeon meshi builds its jokes and mixes in good world building, fun character dynamics and some food porn for a treat. The action scenes show some potential such as figuring out the secret of the living armour and the kraken fight. They could be doing more to turn these into full fledged battles for now they are entertaining if brief
Fantasy cooking shows still have real world substitutes so you can still recreate all their dishes, but the show is so great you don't need to be into cooking to enjoy it.
The thing is, it's not really a comedy anime. Like a lot of the other works of the artist its a mix of realism, fantasy and tought experiment. The point is making a fictional and fantastic world make as much sense as possible and giving it a sense of realism. That's why they spend time explaining why certain monsters look this or that way, why you don't have over the top fighting and why you don't have over the top caricatures with coke goblin energy. TLDR: Dungeon Meshi is not a comedy despite it having lots of humor. (Tbf tho, the comedic timing of the anime is sometimes really bad, a lot of jokes that made me laugh in the manga just fall short)
Laios isn't a sociopath hes just autistic, let my guy cook..... Literally...... He's literally surrounded by his special interest. Also as a side note as someone on the lower end of the spectrum I must say that he feels like honestly one of the best Autistic characters I've seen..... Ever. At least in reguards to my experience wich.... Will vary a lot from person to person.... But still. His difining personality trait isn't "that one guy with an Autism" and sad or not that's unironically worthy of praise.
people getting annoyed by marcilles yada yada reaction need to think how would they react if in order to save their best friend, they have to eat alive monkey brains.
I thought for sure the reference to Dazai and No Longer Human was leading to a Bungou Stray Dogs reference. You know, the show with a character named Osamu Dazai posesses an ability called No Longer Human, and in addition to being possibly the most powerful character is the absolute best. And also he's always trying to kill himself.
This video is two months old, so I don’t quite remember if I did that on purpose or not. Timestamp? Or did DM do something similar? I’m not current. Edit: oh wait you’re talking about the intro lol. I was referencing the new isekai that got announced with Dazai as the main character after doing you-know-what to himself, which is what that anime with him and the dragon was.
I mean, it isn't generic at it's core per se, but it uses a lot of generic tropes. Pumching bag, no nonsense guy that leads the party, knight who's personality is mostly his only interest etc.
Sorry dude I can’t imagine a world where this anime is in any way cheap or bad. Maybe it would be different if I watched more anime but by the standards of any ordinary work of animation this show is still exceptional. Ya also gotta remember it’s real (probably quite overworked) people drawing all those frames. Idk I’m just grateful for another nice show.
On “best elf of this decade” and showing Frieren, technically speaking while Frieren’s anime released before Dungeon Meshi’s anime, the manga of Dungeon Meshi has had publication from 2014 to 2023, whereas Frieren is 2020 to ongoing. So Marcille can still retroactively win best elf in general fiction of the 2010s as Frieren occupies the 2020s and likely will hold onto that as a banger story involving a major character as an elf (or half-elf as Marcille is). General fiction is to flex, but also because my favourite elf that isn’t an adaptation of the 2000’s (so funnily enough, this excludes the LOTR elves as those elves are for when they were published). My favourite elf of the 2000s isn’t even a Tolkien-type elf, rather a pre-Tolkien Santa elf being Buddy from the movie Elf, who is a Polar Elf in spirit.
The utter whiplash I got from seeing fellow Autists love Laious for being a fun and great autistic rep to someone calling him a psychopath hit harder than Truck-kun. Jesus fucking christ lmao.
All the characters are multifaceted in a way that any given read on them isn’t necessarily correct or incorrect. The author does that on purpose and she’s pretty good at it. I delve into more detail in the next video on the show that I’m currently working on.
I'm on the side of our resident tall man being on the spectrum as a resident of it myself, It's kind of weird hearing someone say he has a lack of empathy. He cares a lot it's just not the main thing in his thoughts, he shows his heart in his actions because he's terrible at words. Teasing someone about messing up is a way of saying "hey I was scared when you messed up that bad."
I noticed that Marcille frequently changes the way she arrange her hair. Something you rarely see in animation. It unirunically makes her more grounded and relatable. Also it must be a pain for the animators as they have to change her looks all the time.
@@To-To I have seen it a few times it is really fucked up, and hurts to see it, it is something that happens on extreme stress moment, a self defense mechanism that certain people develop: Regression is a defense mechanism in which people seem to return to an earlier developmental stage. This tends to occur around periods of stress-for example, an overwhelmed child may revert to bedwetting or thumb-sucking. Regression may arise from a desire to reduce anxiety and feel psychologically safe. (And it can happen and happens on adults, and in theory I may seem cute or dumb the person is suffering from some severe trauma) Thanks google
Yeah not much to say about this one except for that it looks very much like Konosuba, I haven’t seen it though, and it looks exactly as it says it does. I hope you are well, hope everything in life is healthy and stable, and hope this whole UA-cam thing is still working good for you. Thanks for the short little video, liked it, see you next time!
I think the anime is perfect except soemtiems they seem to completely forget about the stakes of their quest. For example, if they aren't able to save/recover laios's sister, she is permanently dead. Though they'd ratgef eaf good food, then think about that
I knew the dark part was coming, but it still makes it more difficult to enjoy the series. If it had been the same formula of the first 8 episodes, it would have been great for me. Still, it is an amazing anime, whose darker parts get a bit heavy and make it difficult to start watching a new episode if I'm not binging it.
This is a great video and its great at explaining the anime but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP WITH THE UNNECESARRILY INNAPROPIATE JOKE IS SO UNFUNY IT BOTHERS ME SO FUCKING MUCH JESUS CHRIST DID NOT DIE FOR THIS
As an animation director of 9 years. I can guarantee that this anime never has 'cheap' or inconsistent animation. Every cut and frame was meticulously added for characters acting. Don't talk nonsense please.
Cheap and inconsistent were words I used jokingly, as referred to "in all seriousness" in the very next scene, meaning that it was a joke. Additionally, it was a reference to Trigger purposefully producing static, irregular frames for that "cheap" feel that matches their studios identity, typically used to play into the comedy or to give their characters a certain charm. Likewise, to say every cut was meticulous is inherently incorrect. That's typically the goal, yes, but anime production schedules don't typically work that way because of how rushed they tend to be. A frame or cut may be intended to sell a certain emotion, but not EVERY frame or cut because they simply do not have the time they'd need to do so. Many of them would love that time, but producers and dudes in suits who like $$$ say otherwise. I'm not discounting your supposed experience, I'm just sharing my side. You may very well know more than me and have even worked in JP animation yourself.
For a second I thought you were talking about "beeps and boops" as in the sound effects lol I am a simple man, tho. My older videos are way worse with the amount of sexual jokes, so this is actually very tame in comparison, especially since the boob joke here was the only one in the script. The butt zoom I just added in post cause I thought it was funny the audio says "deep story" but it's zooming in on a butt lmao
i actually found this anime really refreshing due to the lack of sexualization of the female characters (somewhat ruined in later episodes) your insistence on sexualizing them anyway in this video goes right along with your lack of understanding of the source material. stick to ecchi

Me too. Those people are the worst.
does it mean bad or good???
Seeing female characters in anime who all don't have basically the exact same body shape is really refreshing!
It is indeed! Variety is the spice of life.
Same
And also they actually have a personality
@@CarlosAlberto-gf3dy | This, too. The fact that so many female characters in anime can be defined in one word like "tsundere" or "yandere" REALLY defines the problem.
What about male characters who have big muscles or are shredded or in general have muscles?
@@To-To Ehhmm.. no it would make it worse.
Much MUCH worse.
The show has a clear structure plot and goal in mind you just cant see it yet.
Either way I'm glad it got animated if only for those aforementioned moments really liked.
saying the animation isnt good is a really weird take
“Isn’t what you’d expect” isn’t the same thing. Some eps look better than others.
@@To-To You said "CHEAP", bruh frame by frame animation >>>>> computer animation.
It’s great. But intentionally inconsistent.
"Lacks a deep forward moving plot to think on or characters that push the boundary of their genre and/or delve into existential thoughts."
This is actually hilarious how exactly wrong this is XD - It's a reasonable misconception to have if you're anime-only and have only seen the first 1/4-ish of the story so far, but I hope you stick with the show to witness how far it goes beyond the simple comedy that you think it is at this stage (in fact there have already been some early hints)!
Or no, should I say *courses?*
not even 1/4th 😭😭 like 1/6
the show has a plot since the first episode: resucing the sister, that is slowly devouered by a dragon.
yes the start seems realy goofy and often laid back but it is still good. the later episodes actually geting realy dark. that is partly because death is not a permanent condition, so you can get into more brutal moments. but especialy by the time they did find the dragon later, the show is going to quite some dark places, that seems unusual for a show, that started like they did.
I mean, I said it was good. Just not for me.
@@To-To Fair enough, I hope it improves for you when it's complete, if you still intend to watch it! Thanks for giving your opinion
It wasn't an Isekai or set in high-school with likable characters and just the right amount of violence. It was really refreshing to see.
As for the world being gruesome, yeah that's only going to actually be shown after the first arc, my point was that not everything is trying to be like Konosuba so to say that it "should" be chaotic when that's not what the manga is trying to do, at all, is kind of in bad faith.
fr also why when they say the konosuba stuff they show a extremely fanservivcy clip, animation and film is a artform not a prno.
@@RayDrawzDragonz smut is also art
Yeah, Laios isn't evil or a psychopath, he's just autistic with a hyperfixation on monsters.
Spoiler alert ‼️
You are both right. Laios DOES care about Falin… but he’s a psychopath that cares about monsters a teeny bit more. This was explained in the final chapters of the manga.
Serious SPOILER ALERT ‼️
DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE MANGA
The main villain curses Laios to never achieve what he wishes for the most. He and the others were st first worried that this meant they would never be able to resurrect Falin… but they succeed, to their shock. It turns out, all monsters are now afraid of Laios and will run away whenever he gets near. His dearest wish is to be able to be closer to monsters. @@ArtemisRahl15
You got some details a tad wrong methinks.
I love marcille so much and how she changes, like she went from silly to experienceing the horrors and becoming absolutely deranged, and back to silly
This video is the equivalent of watching Mushoku Tensei and making a review of it before the first turning point saying it's a fantasy slice of life
I mean, no not really. The character focus is still a point that remains throughout and, no matter what it does differently, it won’t change that the first 5-6 eps this video covers were exactly that way.
To be fair, Dungeon Meshi never fully stops being a slice of life. It sort of weaves it into a larger story, which is part of what I enjoy about it.
Which means he gets to check off "Eating every monster in the Dungeon" from his bucket list at the same time

overall I liked this review but I entirely disagree on some of the criticism's specifically with how you describe some episodes as "dragging" or not utilizing the characters as much as they should.
Wholeheartedly agree. Couldn't have said better
I mean ryoko kui is deeply into fantasy video games like Baldur’s gate but you’re entitled to that opinion
I disagree, the mangaka of DunMeshi Ryoko Kui is a HUGE gaming nerd, she's often cited games like Divinity Original Sin or Baldur's Gate as her inspiration for Delicious in Dungeon
In fact she's even done fanart of those games in her own artstyle
well it does get quite some ideas from dnd in general. it just adds on top of it with explaining the ecosystem and how it changes, when certain things start to happen, like death not being permanent
Dungeon meshi is a perfect adaptation! (They added more Senshi panty shots)
I'm enjoying the anime, but it's definitely adapting the weakest part of the source material as of now. I hope Trigger ramp up the production when the story gets more interesting later on (around episode 12-13) because the manga goes from a silly cooking show to a very well-thought-out story with actual stakes
I keep telling my friends that, but I can't help but be worried that they'll be bored by this part of the show
I'm enjoying is a ton tho, it's honestly a miracle we even got a Dungeon Meshi anime so I'm going to relish every second of it
It kinda reminds me to TTGL a bit. First few episodes while bloody and lots of bodycount, they're still light-hearted. Then BAM, Kamina dead, the stake grew higher, the story get deeper
The story has already begun, because every episode is full of subtle little details and events that connect to the future plot!
top tier editing, looking forwards to the rereview when the rest of the anime comes out because this one seems to be pretty deep in misconception
I actually wasn't aware the series was gonna be 2-cour (24 eps) at first lol. I made the video to encapsulate my thoughts at the time, but also because I assumed it was only 12. Anime don't change drastically in any metric of quality in 6 eps -- since I made this at, like, ep 5 or 6 I think -- and if they do change in a second season then, well, it's a second season that probably came out a year later lol
Not the case with 24 ep anime. They can very easily completely flip their script or find their footing with the extended runtime, or even completely ruin themselves depending on the show, so I'll almost definitely be doing another video on it next season.

They could be doing more to turn these into full fledged battles for now they are entertaining if brief
this actually isnt a comedy anime believe it or not
Fantasy cooking shows still have real world substitutes so you can still recreate all their dishes, but the show is so great you don't need to be into cooking to enjoy it.
This series has Adventure Time vibes, it was a beautiful piece of work, and the way how it was shown was great.
YOU ARE THE REASON I FOUND OUT ISSEKAI SHIKKAKU IS GETTING AN ANIME; THANK YOU!!
I'm glad that helped someone even though I used it as the butt of a joke lol. For what it's worth, I'm also looking forward to it a bit.
I thought it was great
Tbh I thought I was going to die without this getting animated.
It did seem to take awhile, but everything ends up getting an anime eventually.
I love how there's nothing generic about it
Yeah that is pretty nice. It’s quite unique in that regard.
I mean, it isn't generic at it's core per se, but it uses a lot of generic tropes. Pumching bag, no nonsense guy that leads the party, knight who's personality is mostly his only interest etc.
As someone who has seen all of the anime available currently, just wait until ep. 11. Just wait.
Currently on 10. Catching up for the next vid.
Let’s be honest with ourselves : if it doesn’t look cheap at times, it’s not Trigger
Hair color is so real for anime fantasy, not blue or green.
idk man this anime feels ace-centered, so the lack of overt sexualised women (and men) seems right
3:30 for some reason this reminds me of regression and makes me cry
Regression?
@@To-To I have seen it a few times it is really fucked up, and hurts to see it, it is something that happens on extreme stress moment, a self defense mechanism that certain people develop:
Regression is a defense mechanism in which people seem to return to an earlier developmental stage. This tends to occur around periods of stress-for example, an overwhelmed child may revert to bedwetting or thumb-sucking. Regression may arise from a desire to reduce anxiety and feel psychologically safe.
(And it can happen and happens on adults, and in theory I may seem cute or dumb the person is suffering from some severe trauma)
Thanks google
Yeah not much to say about this one except for that it looks very much like Konosuba, I haven’t seen it though, and it looks exactly as it says it does.
I hope you are well, hope everything in life is healthy and stable, and hope this whole UA-cam thing is still working good for you. Thanks for the short little video, liked it, see you next time!
Glad you seemed to like this one more, Steven! See you in two weeks. :)
Realistic must have a new definition in 2024 😑
0:27 Does anyone know the name of the BGM used here?
I think the anime is perfect except soemtiems they seem to completely forget about the stakes of their quest. For example, if they aren't able to save/recover laios's sister, she is permanently dead. Though they'd ratgef eaf good food, then think about that
Which is why it's hard for me to take the series seriously despite people saying otherwise. Seems to me like they don't give a shit lol

Why do i hear the unwelcome school on the background??
because BA has peak music

@@bubblegumlie4918 I put his in the second vid. Equal representation
Fuck work!
Work does indeed suck. Especially on a Saturday.
Psst... Hey... I think you missed the second half of the season...
@@PowderChan-qr4ru that’s why I made two videos on it. Weird you found this one and not the other one with more views lol
@@To-To funny how things work 😅
I knew the dark part was coming, but it still makes it more difficult to enjoy the series. If it had been the same formula of the first 8 episodes, it would have been great for me.
Still, it is an amazing anime, whose darker parts get a bit heavy and make it difficult to start watching a new episode if I'm not binging it.
But no longer human has an anime???
The first 4 ep of blue literature
Senshi the dwarf cook is best man. The amount of actual male fanservice being upskirted 2 to 3 times per episode is incredible.
This is a great video and its great at explaining the anime but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP WITH THE UNNECESARRILY INNAPROPIATE JOKE IS SO UNFUNY IT BOTHERS ME SO FUCKING MUCH JESUS CHRIST DID NOT DIE FOR THIS
Do you have examples? I made this video two months ago so I don’t quite remember what you might have an issue with lol
Don't forget to hit the like button if you enjoyed! It really helps the video! :)
0:15 I see your point 😅😉😗
This review came out to early
@@purplex4065 that’s why I made a second, updated video.
She is the best half elf. not elf. She is not the real deal. Just a half one
seems kinda racist
Hater
How???
This show seems interesting and your video is good! But my man HOW MANY BOOG AND BOOT ZOOMS DO YOU REALLY NEED -this is coming from a girl lol
For a second I thought you were talking about "beeps and boops" as in the sound effects lol
I am a simple man, tho. My older videos are way worse with the amount of sexual jokes, so this is actually very tame in comparison, especially since the boob joke here was the only one in the script. The butt zoom I just added in post cause I thought it was funny the audio says "deep story" but it's zooming in on a butt lmao
@@To-To Oh man I was on the tip of the iceberg lol but fair enough! Still great video I was hooked and I’ve seen like 2 anime in my life lol
@@smugdodofart27 I'm not sure why UA-cam pushed you the video if that's the case, but I'm glad you enjoyed it! The algorithm is mystical lol

nah marcile is a goat frieren is bland at best
those are fighting words
Frieren is a very disappointing character: "Bland" replaces deep for a character who is so old and experienced and so imho does not work.
anime only reviewers are always bs

i actually found this anime really refreshing due to the lack of sexualization of the female characters (somewhat ruined in later episodes) your insistence on sexualizing them anyway in this video goes right along with your lack of understanding of the source material. stick to ecchi
Hard to understand something you’ve never read.
Watch it in spanish

Nah, the writer is just a good D and D GM. Of course they can write real human characters.
