  • Eric Thomas | Motivational Speech | How Bad Do you Want it
Eric Thomas (aka ET The Hip Hop Preacher) shares The Secrets to Success in a passionate and energetic speech to students at Michigan State University (MSU). Central to ET’s message is the now famous (and powerful) “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful!” antidote.
If you haven’t heard Eric Thomas speak yet, you must watch his Secrets to Success speech and become acquainted with one of the most energizing speakers I’ve heard (watch the speech below).
Eric is a renowned author, speaker, educator and minister.
He’s been called upon by professional sports teams in the NBA, NFL and MLB, to help inspire, motivate and energize elite athletes to perform at the highest level. And he’s also spoken to several colleges, schools and companies with the same mission in mind.
But this wasn’t always the case.
Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Eric dropped out of high school at the age of sixteen. And after a heated argument with his mother and step-father, he left his home in a fit of anger and found himself living in the (very cold) streets of Detroit.
From earning whatever he could by stealing, to sleeping in abandoned buildings, to eating from garbage cans, this was the most challenging period of Eric’s life. But it would also prove to be his greatest strength later on.

7 years ago this speech flipped a switch in me. At 23 I was a loser with no life goals, no dreams, working in fast food and failed all of my classes in my first 2 years of college and dropped out. I preferred to sleep, party, drink and play video games all night as a distraction from my failure. One night I stumbled on this and decided I needed to sacrifice what I was to be what I wanted to become, I sacrificed and struggled soo much and broke down because I had to study harder than anyone to pass classes that others breezed through. No matter how hard life got I put my success first and stopped quitting on life and on myself. In 7 years I went from a fast food cook to a Firefighter to an EMT to an Advanced EMT to a Paramedic and as of today a Registered Nurse graduate studying for my NCLEX national registry exam that i take in a week. I took all the lessons in this video to heart and molded my life around it. Studyng for this exam has been tough and life is beating me down once again trying to make me lose focus but no matter what MY SUCCESS COMES FIRST and I want to succeed more that I want to breath and sleep. Just needed to come back to watch it again for the thousandth time to regain focus

Thanks for sharing!! I use this video as daily motivation and affirmation. This is extremely life changing. I’m 31, Plant manager for a high tech corp. look, I’ve been told no maybe 100 times. I kept going, the fight in me is too great. I’m a mixed martial artist, so obstacles and being uncomfortable are my best friend. I embrace these things.

Something similar with me. I had some teachers tell me I wouldn't be shit because I told them they weren't teaching us by giving us assignment packets and sitting at their desk. Graduating soon with a PhD in engineering. I sent them emails inviting them to my dissertation, only one accepted the offer. But she was the only one out of the others who saw something in me, and tried to get me to see that.

I watched and listen to this man and his speeches all college. I cried to them. I shook my head to them because I thought I couldn’t be what he was speaking of. In 2 days I’m graduating with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). I have a job ready in the ICU. I did it. I cannot believe I did it. Thank you Eric Thomas for motivating me when I was crying on my knees.

Depends on the situation. I don't care how much heart you have, how much faith you have in yourself, if you don't have the vocal cords to sing, you cannot sing. So, first be realistic with oneself, then go forward.

I was fat, dropped out of college, and depressed. I needed to hear this over 10 years ago. I remember I would force my ass to get up at 5 am to go lift and I would listen to this.
While I'm a single dad, I've been able to get into the best shape of my life, and soon graduating with a PhD in engineering.
I am proud of myself and at the end of the day, it truly is all about working hard. I would work 100+ hours a week to be successful with my studies and research, and I never took my daughters time away from me. Was it difficult? Fuck yeah. But it was worth it, and I am a better man for forcing myself to not shy away from challenges. There was not one person who outworked me. I would be the first one in my building by 6:00 a.m. I would be the last one out by 7 pm and go work out before heading home. Sunday evenings when my daughter went home to her mother, I would meal prep all my lunches and dinners.

Fast forward 6 years later I graduated and started a successful business. I never thought I would be doing what I do now. If you are failing right now and unsure what your future holds. Be patient and enjoy the journey. Sometimes you don’t see it coming but you will see it go. Everything will workout in time. Keep believing and keep going. There will be moments you fall and question it all. But it never ends please take care of yourself as you reach for your dreams because it’s easy to get lost along the way. Just know that no matter where you are in your journey there is love and success. I didn’t see that then but I see that now. Love and peace ❤

Due to some personal reasons and change of wind I listened to this video over and over for the whole year. Every night when I thought of well I studied for more than 10 hrs now and I should stop I would listen to this and pick myself up to work even harder. By the end of my sophomore year I had score over 3.7 GPA is both my semesters and also gotten approval to make more courses getting out of probation. That’s the power of this video!!!

ET man you've done so much for me. I remember working at McDonalds while in college just trying to survive and help my mom with the bills. I would watch this video every day and just cry because of everything going on in my life. I cant tell you how many times I'd be studying at home after getting off a 12 hour shift and have the electricity turn off, or not being able to wash my hands or flush the toilet because the city shut our water off, or sweating in our house because we dont have enough to repair the ac. I remember moving houses I remember seeing my mom and 4 siblings cry because we didn't have food or didn't know if we were going to make it by Friday which was payday. But I pushed through and graduated in May with a Bachelors degree in Accounting and a minor in finance with highest honors (3.94 GPA). I got a job at an accounting firm and things are looking a little better for us. You're a big reason why I made it to where I am. I'm not going to stop, this is just the beginning.

I found this speech when I was 17 years old. I was getting ready to go to college, I was young dumb, and in retrospect I was spoiled, but I was damn sure I did not want to have to bust my ass every day until I was 70 just to put food on the table for my family. I began my electrical engineering degree the following year, and frequently returned to this speech when it was difficult. Everything this man says in this video became reality for me. I am currently 23, and got that degree. I failed classes. I lost jobs. I lost close friends, but I was damn sure I was not going to suffer forever. I am confident in saying that without this masterpiece of wisdom, I would not be standing where I am today. In a beautiful house, making more money than anyone in my high school class. It does take heart. It does take sacrifice. You cannot only kind of want it. The only advise I can pass on to those who are here struggling, is to stop wasting the opportunities that are in front of you. Whatever those opportunities are, you are capable of them and more. Good isn't good enough if it can be better. Better isn't good enough if it can be best.

I was in my 2nd year at college. All my "friends" had abandoned me, I was failing most of my classes, and felt my life going no where. I was alone, and felt hopeless, and knew I had to do something to change my life. This video got me through that time. It motivated me to be relentless and study non-stop and to stop worrying about being alone and pleasing other people. My next 2 years in college were my best academically, and I made deans list all the quarters for both of those years. I even got A+'s in some of the hardest courses (looking at you organic chemistry), all because I decided I wanted to succeed as bad as I wanted to breathe. I didn't care about anything or anyone, I wanted to succeed. And the sleep thing is so true. I can't tell how how many nights I spent in the engineering lab on campus where I didn't even go home, I would just study non-stop the whole night until the next morning where I would go to class again and repeat the whole cycle. I was cold, alone, and tired at those moments, but I knew what I was doing was the right thing. Glad to say I graduated college, made some good friends now, and have a good job making 6 figures. Thank you Eric Thomas for getting me through one of the darkest periods of my life.

I know I am not half the man ET is or my father was, but because of people like ET and those who spread his message (@Nathan Scaglione) I am filled with excitement and gratitude for life. I listened to ET during finals week of my first semester in college. Ended semester with a 3.46. I graduated now. Despite my GPA dip, I am proud of my grades. "You won't be successful until I don't have to give you a dime to do what you do." I don't know what I am doing in life yet, but I look forward to it. Anyone who is reading this: I wish you the best. Life will be tough but working together is so important in life. I love you for you. God bless you. AGAPE

My little brother showed me this video before he passed away from suicide after 21 years of laughs and tears. 1 year, 5 months and 19 days later late at midnight, I thought of that moment and at this current time of 24 years here, I'm trying to start my own auto business with a degree in automotive technology. Erick Thomas knows what he's talking about. I was in school when my brother passed and I damn near failed but I fought through it because I knew I couldn't give up. It wasn't an option. My brother was in my corner always and he dared me to take a lil pain. I miss him every second and at the same time, the fight makes me that much stronger. You guys can do it, no matter what it is💯

When I was 16 my parents got a divorce and I started failing school and abusing drugs. I BARELY passed high school. I took a year off after graduation now I am sober and finishing up my third semester in college with a 4.0 gpa all three semesters. My entrance exams for dental hygiene are in two weeks. I got this. You have to want it bad enough. End of story.

This speech got me through my bachelor's, my masters and will get me through my PhD. Listen when I was doing my master's in data science and statistics I was the only one that didn't have any experience in coding, my bachelors was in de medical field. There was this hardcore theoretical math course only 35% pass, I made EVERY problem available, I EVEN dreamed about math problems and would get out of bed and try to solve them, guess what I passed at the first go, bearly but passed. This was the man I used to listen to. I then TUTORED in it and got a PhD! EVERYTHING is possibly, you just have to have heart!!!! Writing my manuscript right now. I'm the first one in the family to go to university. I even had relatives laughing at me calling me crazy for studying during vacations.

Found this video in high school and changed my life, people thought I wouldnt be anything, failing out of school, realized after seeing this, I need to make changes, so I repeated courses, stayed after class, got tutors, and graduated, and after all of that, I Wanted More, went to college, graduated with 3.7, found out after all of that I had severe ADHD, that’s not a excuse anymore. Everyone who said I wouldnt be anything still living at there parents house, I got a career, nice house, new truck, no one thought I’d be here not even my parents, I didn’t think I could either, but I figured if I fail and fail and fail eventually I would succeed, through all of that I’m not successful yet. But I got this far, it motivates me even more, I will reach my goals, im 40k from making 6 figures, it will happen. I Sacrifice what I was for me to become.

When no one believes in you; you have to motivate yourself. This was the first motivational video I ever heard when I was in community college exactly 6 years ago with a GPA of 1.4. I never felt I was good enough compared to others and always was intimidated by the smart kids in the classroom. However, I was hungry and was willing to put as many hours as it took to make it. Today my diploma in B.S in Accounting arrived on the mail and I am in tears of joy how far I have become. Not only have I received my diploma, but I have also started working in my field of study. Whoever is reading this; don’t let anyone put limits on you and ignore everything and focus on yourself. You will accomplish anything you want if have a true and small circle of friends and family.

Reminder that sleep is also for people who need it. Hustle is important and I love this video, it's amazing, but you can't make your brain and body work right without enough sleep. Some people need it more than others. I used to be able to skip sleep, now I have serious problems that really mess me up if I don't get it. Whether it's for your behavioral health, your physical health, or just how you feel, it's okay to prioritize what you need in order to function at your best. This speech is incredible, absolutely, but don't rely just on working hard with the axe without also remembering to sharpen it. Take care of yourself.

Exactly referencing Beyonce and 50 cent and what they do in their life means little to nothing at all to me. Those people don't even get to decide when to sleep everything that they do in life is decided for them where they live who they date everything. I do believe this man has a positive message but not everybody is in the same situation. Everyone needs sleep and no one in this world should rather stay awake for 3 days to make money than to care about their own health people that are in the hip hop industry believe that money is happiness.
