When Dickey Betts entered the stage at the second Rockpalast rocknight in 1978 another magic moment in the long history of Rockpalast for decades was born.
Dickey Betts, founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, was sparkling with his delight in playing and fired his songs and guitar solos into the audience - millions of people on their screens all over Europe (many countries were connected with the ARD-Live-Show via Eurovision). Epic “Jessica” for example, a Dickey Betts written title, already successful with the Allman Brothers, or the southern rock classic “Ramblin’ Man”.
As bonus track, we added a 17-minute jam session with Dickey Betts and Spirit, recorded later the same evening.
30 years later, in 2008, we can salute Dickey for convincing the audience at Museumsplatz in Bonn on DVD 2.
Our Rockpalast Re-Launch comes in an abundant box set containing 2 DVDs and for the first time both concerts complete on 3 CDs plus a booklet with original liner notes by “Mr. Rockpalast” Peter Rüchel.

RIP Dickey Betts, 4/18/2024
Everyone needs to watch this tonight. RIP Dickey 😢
❤❤❤ Er war einer der besten Gitarristen aller Zeiten!!! Ich bin sehr traurig! Ruhe in Frieden!
When DICKEY BETTS plays guitars and sings HE swings - - - - HE can swing a rock tune - - - - country up a blues - - - - make HIS slide sound like a tenor saxophone - - create a moving jazzy groove that goes on and on as it rides along - - - - DICKEY BETTS will always be with us - - - - DICKEY BETTS is with us Dead or Alive - !
Fantastic...Betts was (is) simply superb !
Thanks for the music, Dickey.
Raise a glass my friends...
And though the tears flow from our eyes...
The veils are thin two beers in...
The music never dies...
🍻💕
Dickey Betts. What a Life.
Legend
This hurts buddy, so long Mr Betts, thanks for all your music, i'll miss you !!!
23:32, all the alcohol, illicit drugs, raging anger, failed marriages and failed musical relationships aside, he was brilliant player, composer, encourager and motivator, second to none.
A true musical genious. Even drunk; he played with much more than technique. A master of all genres. And the songs he wrote? The instrumentals alone ensured his place in musical history. Best show I ever witnessed (out of at least 50) was in NYC right after Duane died. He was magnificent. Played over 2 hours a night 4 nights in a row and made it look easy. His playing lives forever.❤🎸
RIP, We Love you Dickey .
Rest Easy Sir
Thanks that i can see that again. RIP Randy & RIP Dickey
R.i.p. Dickey Betts 12th December 1943 - 18th April 2024 🙏🎸🎵🔥
lov'd Great Southern...what a tight band ....have all their lp's and got to see them outside on the campus of ohio state university in 1977...
hey i wrote a comment below about seeing DB Great Southern headline at Legend Valley/Buckeye Lake July 1978 which was the very first ever show at Legend Valley and was called Dixie Jam I followed in 1979 w/ Dixie Jam II... I graduated OSU 12/76 and was out of the country during 1977 but back to Columbus in 1978... saw the GD at Vets Memorial 4/19/78 when they played the first ever cover of Werewolves as the encore.... i am from Columbus grew up in Bexley/Eastmoor on the east side...
nice i went to school there and caught their show outside near student center.
Hey yall- still mourning DB sadly on my 70th bday today 4/21/24..... so going back to 1978 i was at the very first ever Legend Valley/Buckeye Lake show, which was an event called Dixie Jam I, outdoors on 7/30/1978 - Dickey & Great Southern were the headliner- on the bill also the (absolutely outstanding) Outlaws, the CDB, and the Earl Scruggs Review....
ps when i was 17yo on 7/31/1971 also outdoors (North Baltimore, Ohio) in a venue for some reason named "The Park" which was carved out of a cornfield in the middle of nowhere by some awesome "Free John Sinclair" radical Michigan hippies who brought the Allmans to this unknown venue just a couple weeks after the release of Fillmore East....
and im not done! -
later in Fall of 1971 on the campus of Univ. of Cincinnati i was at a show which the Allmans headlined and Mahavishnu opened but right after Mahavishnu finished (btw LOUDEST show ever!) it was announced that Allmans couldnt make it but Spirit had arrived to take their place and this was when they were touring to promote the 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus so what an amazing turn of events....
and i say all that to say this - that seven years later in 1978 and in Germany here is Dickey Betts from the Allmans and Randy California from Spirit together JAMMING the blues at the end of this Rockpalast show .... you cant make this shit up!
Legendary. The world has been forever changed.
Been mining YT for as many live "Ramblin Man's" as I can find the last two days. RIP Dickey.
R.I.P MR SOUTHERN MAN
Loved Him A truly wonderful artist Ringing like a Bell in my mind Awesomeness
Rest in Peace April 18 2024
God this hurts, wish I could have seen you live. Rest easy ghost rider you got a whole new crowd to blow away! 😢
Tell ya a story. I entered college in Atlanta in 76.about a month in saw a notice for Dickie and Great Southern. Their first gig. Roses Cantina. Little place with a big bar stacks of PBR and pool tables.
He was drinking at the bar while a jazz fusion group called Dixie Dregs were the warmup. He came on and played til 400 in the morning. Toy Caldwell showed up. All for 2.50 to get in. And walkin home lol
@clarencearnold2137 Man that is such a awesome story! You got a memory many wish they could have 😂
Love Dickey Betts!!
Been watching him for 50 years up down the good and the bad ,I loved Highway Call it really showed his Western swing just brilliant and his great song writing, then he comes up with this Miles and bebop long soloing and beautiful melodies but catch him on an off night and he falls apart,Gregg mentioned in his book one thing like the sound being off would make him madd as hell and destroyed his playing, Gregg said he's not a bad guy just a mixed up guy ! But he did step up and take the band in a positive direction after Duane and Berry died when Gregg and Butch were too far gone,Ramblin Man and Jessica put them in super stardom and made them all very rich but in the mid 70`s they crashed and burned and they rose again they were at it a long time simply the best !
goodbye mr dickey betts . we will miss you
Love me some Richard Betts! 😢💔🎸

Putsssss. Coincidência das brabas
just what I needed for today's trip, something a little different, yet a little familiar
Who cares if he was drunk if he was high it doesn't matter live like a rockstar and I believe he did and I believe he outlived a lot of his band members as well anyway RIP dickey I love your music thank you so much
TY LONG LIVE❤❤❤❤🎇🎇🚌🚌
If we compare a guitarist with a western gunslinger, then here is the proof of who was better at the Allmans, I think Dickey was unfairly overshadowed Dan Toler another great guitarist
thanks for watching
Dickey Betts & Great Southern🎶🎶🎵🎵✨✨✨✨✨🎸
Agreed, Dickey was always overshadowed in the public's eye by the death of Duane and his legacy I think the same is true for Hendrix still largely being considered the "greatest" guitarist mostly because he died early; Santana outclassed him at his own game even at the same time.
Santana took advantage of this circumstance, in fact Jimi taught him many tricks, which was said before since there was practically no theory since it was the weapon of guitarists who, if they have knowledge of music theory, were envious of their genius, just like Prince. Van Halen etc....and I've had this problem myself thanks for watching@@sercastamere9853
Rest in Peace DB
❤❤❤ Ich liebe diese Band über alles !!! 😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉
Great sound. Nice job mixing this.
RIP Dickey , the music you created will never die :-) In Memory og Elizabeth Reed
His rythm and feel and plain honesty all the way. No one like him.
I remember the original broadcast.
After too many years, I picked up an electric guitar in 2022 and Dickey was my inspiration. Doesn't matter if it is Allman Brothers or Great Southern, I love his touch and tone. Love to hear Dangerous Dan Toler, too!
ハマるぜ! Nice
ピーター・バラカン🎉
RIP!
Siempre es bueno escuchar la musica de los ABB.
Dickey sempre Dickey! Mandando muito bem sempre. O Cara!
Oh yes...
Dickey un gran guitarrista .
👍um dos melhores.
Germany NEVER heard a guitar like this lol
I love Dickey but every famous rock blues jazz band has played Germany plus they have killer music over there , too...
If you don`t know what you are talking about, than simply shut up! Or maybe listen to Jane, Birth Control, ELOY, Amon Düül, Michael Schencker (UFO) and the list goes on and on....
¡ EXCELENTE BANDA !
High falls beautiful music.....
1st time I saw ABB they used to play a lot dwn in south Fla Ft.lauderdale2b exact 1969,1970ish girls were still wearing skirts in hischool that's when the pot scene took off their 1st album came out1969 so did Johnny winter icons ppl without a doubt everyfamous guitar player know who dicky & Johnny winter are they wrote the books on rock guitar had it not been for drugs &alcohol and Betts bad attitude they woulda got a lot more props they all tried 2b good as Johnny &dicky them boys could play guitar their both in the top 5 if not more I been listening 55yrs now I know what I'm talking bout in 1970 July 4th wknd the they were at Atlanta pop festival approx 400,000ppl bb king used 2play with them alot a gang of us hi schooler Longhair hippies drove up from Lauderdale stoned the whole wknd Jimi Hendrix was there on Saturday nite 2 months later September 1970 he died of overdose in England only time I saw Hendrix but I saw the brothers dzns of times over 50 yrs they were.my heroes along with Alvin Lee &Santana as good as it gets RIP DICKY
U have great taste every one of those artists are killer and influential!
Love DB seen him probably more than 25 times with the Brothers, him & Dangerous Dan Toler always were great together. I would love for the Allman Betts band to do High Falls🤟🏻
Rest in peace..⚘️
Best musical night in my life when Dicky said “We’ll back in a few with some special guests” that was the reunion concert in Central Park, NYC. At the end of the show no one would leave and the promoter had to come on stage and basically beg everyone to leave.
That High Falls is something. Dangerous Dan was awesome there too. That song has to rank among Dickey,s best compositions , with Jessica or Les Brers or Liz reed
I have seen , The Allman Bros. , &MR. BETT,S , oh about 9 times , that,s a cat,s life , so they say , like wine , guitar playing usually age,s well !
I’m not american but a lifelong fan of ”Southern rock”. Love Skynyrd, of course but Dickey along with Gregg Allman is the very core of SR for me. And Dickeys guitar playing….what a wizzard.
Dangerous Dan Toler was a beast. Replaced Duane in ABB,played in Greg’s Solo band,Thants him playing rythmn.
As always Allman bros. music as brutal as it is.
1:23:20 signature riff school
Who joins him on stage at the end
Here Dickey was a bit more spoiled than Randy :-) Dickey was playing ok but was not sober. Randy was on it but different.
Jimi Hendrix wanted to form the band with Randy California and it is not known what happened
SPIRIT 🎵🎵🎶🎶✨✨✨✨✨🎸
WHAT?!
@@JamesFolkers Well, in the last part of the video he comes out with Randy California from Spirit and makes the comment about Jimi Hendrix, which I have read in music magazines.
Ed Cassidy on drums
Ha slimes
RIP. What a musician is lost. 😢
Last time I saw him he wasn't Dickie Betts, he was Dickie Butt and was so drunk and obnixious half the crowd was gone by the third or fourth song. It was very sad...................
That’s just awful to hear!
He would have gotten a pass from me,I fuckin love Dickey and it's 2024 and that sombitch is still alive.
He died today.
Come on! We all get older! He does not deserve that comment!
Even drunk he could outplay most of these show offs most of whom were imitators. Plus he had his incredible son to cover the hard licks. A true musical genius. He carried ABB on his back after Duane died and never even broke a sweat. 😢
