Dickey had a "fondness" for me, mostly because Greg "hated" me. Greg was just south of Tampa, on "old Highway 41" and Dickey was in Sarasota [off 41]...I was in Holmes Beach [Ana Maria Island]. Dickey and Greg used to play a few nights a week in a little dive bar in Bradenton Beach, when they weren't on tour {1978} Cliche: those were the days

I saw this band when Duane and Barry were alive in Boone, N.C. at the Appalachian State University Gymnasium in 1971. They played for over 3 hours until some moron turned the stadium lights on. I believe that was the best concert I have had the opportunity to attend. I just turned 73 and I thank God I was alive to hear such great music from what is probably the best band ever.

the Allman is one of my favorite goups, here fusion was always so natural, simply and extremly complicate at the same time...Think never gonna rise a similar group..

I have this on vinyl. It's actually my Dad's. Purchased new in July or August of 1971. Yep. Pink label, first pressing. I just found it last week. I had no idea he even had one. He knew, though lol. And never mentioned it. I ran in there and showed him, as if he had never seen it before 🤣
I'll treasure it and every one of his other, original Allman Brothers Band albums until I'm gone. He gave me Howard Duane Allman's middle name as my middle name, as well. That's a fact I couldn't be prouder of 😁. You can tell who my Dad's favorite guitar player is, huh?
His vinyl collection has been in, storage for almost 20 years so I was worried they were all warped. Nope. Not a single warped record among the 87 that he owns. Now I'm looking for a good, vintage turntable to pick up so, I can set up his old Yamaha CR-620 stereo like it used to be back then and jam! He had a Yamaha YP211? turntable, too. But it seems to have disappeared in the last 20 years. They go for 3-500+ today. 😖 Makes me really wish it were still around. It was a dang good turntable.

If you take care of your records and keep a good stylus in your unit, the sound from analog is much fuller than the digital. Pain in the butt to change every 20 minutes, but still worth it.

Just a suggestion in case you don’t have it Marshall Tucker, Where we all belong, double album, one studio, one live. On the live side 24 hours at a time and Everyday (I have the blues) shouldn’t be missed if you like long jams like the Allman Bros. I was a farm kid, around 14 and installed a cassette player on our tractor. My cousin made me a bunch of tapes of Allmans, Marshall Trucker, Grateful Dead, Commander Cody, Flying Burrito Bros. Really helped pass the time on long days out in the field. I lost count how many times the player ate the tapes and I would stop and patiently rewind them back into the case with a pencil. I still have copies (now streaming) that I still enjoy today 50 ish years later. Good music never goes out of style.

Blackberry Smoke, The Marcus King Band, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown, Gary Clarke Jr to name but a few. There's still great music being made.. And btw.. The same way you talk about rap and modern music is the same way old folks in the 50' talked about Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. Don't get me wrong, i'm 52 years old and i'm not into rap nor modern music at all but to dismiss it as trash is kinda stupid and short sighted. But if you choose to live in the past, be my guest..

They created a sound nobody was doing at the time. I know because I was there listening to everything I can get my hands on. When I got to see the original Allman Brothers live opening for Johnny Winter in 1971, remember it being a WTF moment. They opened with Statesboro blues and Duane's slide just hooked you from the first note. Other people were playing slide at the time but Duane figured out how to put jet engines on his. 😂 It wasn't too long into the concert that you realize that this band is tight as f***.
Fifty-plus years later and this album sounds just as fresh when it came out in the summer of 71.

Saw them in sept. 1971 at stony brook college on long island NY. With Wet Wille. There was an early and late show - had tics for early show and after show friend and I went in the bathroom and hid with feet up in a stall - all they did was open door and look in to see if empty before letting in late show people - they did not see us and after late show people started coming into bathroom we just walked out and saw the late show for free - both shows were wonderfull - a couple of Duane's last shows as he died not too long after the stony brook shows.
Very lucky to see Duane live!

Those of you that like me listened in reverence to every note, who may have made a cassette and still 20, even 40 years later constantly looped it in the car, that knew and deeply felt each note - at least on sides 1,3, and 4 - must know that THIS is the actual album. Not the sacrilegious remake, which loses the perfection of every note. You hear wannabe-cool-but-ain't people going on in comments on the REMAKE album about how holy and precious that album is, greatest live ever, blah, blah. They don't even know. THIS is the one. The greatest live album. Note for note.

So we went to see this group called Canned Heat and the Allman band was the opening act... When they finished, half the Fillmore East of 2nd Ave, NYC , was empty and we figured they All went out smoking, drinking...when the Bear starts singing the joint is still half empty... After a couple of songs, very repetitious at that, we understood why those people never came back: within a few minutes we also left Canned Heat behind with the theater two third empty ! From then on, the Allman Bros became headliners . 😮First double drum set i ever saw.Expert musicians, great instrumentals!

I saw them perform at the Electric Factory in Philly about 2 weeks before these concerts at the Fillmore East. When I heard the album I remember thinking they had done the same set as in Philly. This has always been my favorite live album by anybody! With the possible exception of Justin Bieber Live At The ... just kidding!

  • @retroshared5213

One thing I will give this band credit for. They showed me just how you play and present the blues.
For those who may be unfamiliar with the format, and I can't imagine just who you are, the blues are simple and very straight forward. For example; follow the pattern. Start with a basic statement. Then restate it followed by a cap, or ending statement that resolves the point you are making.
By doing this you establish the point of the song, then expand the point you are trying to make and then finish it in such a way that leads you on to another point in the story you are trying to tell. Then you follow the same pattern again.
The instruments do much the same thing but use the age old technique of passing the buck from one to another to establish each musicians part in the story. Then it builds to it's ultimate climax.
Like in a book, you have a beginning, a middle and an end.
