    PT is right about those disc braking forces, I have a bike with a 180mm front rotor and either I would have to over tighten the carbon steerer expander plug ( which I didnt want to do) to keep it from coming out when trying to preload the headset, or re-load the headset after/before every ride because the headset would come loose from not beeing able to properly preload it because of the expander plug coming loose. I called the shop where I bought it from and explained and asked if it would be a good idea for me to rough up the inside of the steerer to keep the plug from coming out, they told me to come in and they would give me some carbon paste first to try. That uneven force applied to one side of the fork really does knock them conical bearings loose

    Hambini's hit the nail on the head = Q&C. I had a chat with Condor Cycles about a frame that was a bad one and said to Greg Needham the shop manager, what you could do with is a bike jig to check all frames that comes into Condor Cycles and then put anything out of line/dodgy to one side to be returned/credit note. He turned around and said, We did have one and we sold it a couple of years ago....

    The COVID shortage and massive demand completely f#cked the industry. I completely agree with PT that if a BB or headset is out of spec it shouldn't be build. But try to explain to a customer who ordered their bike in late 2020 that their bike with already out of date di2 will be delayed another 4 months because they need another frame.
    You can also see that sometimes the assembly and painting in Europe is getting sloppy. Paint overspray is common, derailleurs aren't indexed and brakes rub.

    About the EVs, I wouldn't object but I believe our dear PT is missing out on one of the more important factors, the external costs put on society for the pollution ECE vehicles put out. Pollution, especially the NOx from diesel combustion is really nasty stuff and shorten life spans all over the world. Increased risk of astma, lung cancer and so on is a major issue in cities, mainly driven by those fumes but of course also particles from tires etc. So apart from the moral health perspective, it also costs society a lot of money in healthcare. Cities would save billions getting people on bikes just from that, which is why an investment in 1km cycle lane is actually an indirect saving/ income for a city for the health benefit it enables. So yeah, I'm obviously pro-cycling all the way, but you can't argue with the severity of pollution mate. I might add that cargo bikes are fantastic modern SUVs for city-folk.

    The "Made in XXX" is something I'd like to comment on. I live in the US. I work in a field where I visit lots of manufacturing companies. I know that a lot of this labor is usually Temp Hires or Union Workers. The Temps are unskilled cheap labor. The Union workers are the laziest bunch of fuckers I've ever seen and honestly I don't get how those companies survive. So the Made in the USA sticker on a product tells me that one, it's over-priced because well someone has to pay for that labor, and two, it's quality may or may not be any good but at least I should be able to get a refund if I'm not happy with it.

  • @AlistairLattimore

    Regarding the Nerdthletes, I think you might be over simplifying the problem. In other Olympic sports as PT says, it is mostly about the human and when technology does intervene the governing bodies step in to regulate it in some way such as skin suits in swimming or carbon plated running shoes. Unfortunately there is an inherent problem with that in cycling, you can put every athlete on the same bike but the size of the athlete will still play an overwhelmingly dominant factor due to aero drag. If you want to test the human, put them on a smart trainer and do the hour record for power to normalize for the bike and aero problems. Since that is going to be boring as shit, you might as well accept that the hour record (as an example) is a distance record, it can/is hugely impacted by aero and just let people duke it out. With the exception of Dan Bigham, who I understand is basically a perfect human specimen from an aerodynamics stand point - moving forward anyone that is going to take on the hour record is going to be backed by big teams with money and access to wind tunnels, in which case the field is levelled so let them duke it out.

    Why did PT cite Polestar? They are effectively a boutique, low volume mfg. compared to the big fish. Seems like cherrypicked info.
    It would be like Pinarello saying their bikes are only ridden 5000 miles in their lifetime. While that may be true, they’re small in the bike market. If Giant said something like that, then it’d be more valid data for bikes as a whole.
    Edited for clarity, and added the example.

    • @nluisa
      @nluisa Рік тому +1

      I do agree product quality has very little connection with manufacturing origin, however, that is not the same as saying the origin doesn't matter. H&S, social, and environmental laws aren't nearly as strict as in the UK or other EU countries, for a start, not to mention the shipping carbon footprint. I do appreciate many consumers do not give a s#!t about this, as long as they pay less, but it does matter to some I'm afraid. Btw, I am talking about actual manufacturing, not finishing touches just for the sake of the sticker...
      Also, I do believe buying is also voting for a business model over another. I don't agree with certain social/environmental standards so I will try to put my money elsewhere if possible (easier with some products than others). Moving to cheaper labour/low regulation areas, only to keep the prices exactly the same is disgraceful, and just because the issues are out of sight, does not make them disappear. The blue river around the denim district in China is a good example.
      I live in a EU country with lots of manufacturing, traditionally for established brands from the UK, Italy, France, especially on clothing. Some moved their operations to Eastern Europe or Asia, leaving hundreds unemployed here, but you would see the same exact price at the shops. That is something I cannot agree with...
      I have no issues with buying chinese brands made in China as such, however, I will always prefer a product made closer and where social/enviromental regulations are better. I am basically saying to that company their business model is working. Also, I would not like myself or others I know, to work long hours for low pay, or even get ill whilst working, so why should I support that with my income?...
      An yes, I do own products (mostly electronics) made under such conditions, but unfortunately there is still no alternative...

      Wayno- apparently, down there, "troll" is also upside-down. Up here, trolls are people who say things they don't believe simply to get a rise out of the crowd. I think Durianrider says what he believes. Do you think that you as a normal person get's enough advantages out of losing 2 lbs to pay 100% more for a bike? I am 78 and am closing in on 4,000 miles and 100,000 feet of climbing. And on a standard Italian steel frameset that weighs 2 lbs more than my Trek Emonda and 4 lbs more than my Look KG585 without the fear of massive failures that all carbon fiber could have. I am permanently disabled from carbon fiber failure, and believe me, you don't want to take the pills I have to take to prevent seizures and memory loss.

      I am quoting from published white papers grom the industry - not making it up. When the trend is to finance a car for 30k km and swap it for a new one, and the CO2 cost of an EV is much higher, it is not green.

  • @tomkunich9401
    @tomkunich9401 Рік тому

    Total agreement on EVs. But stop pretending that the electrical power comes from a "green" source when the fact is that less than 15% at best is. The conversation from fossil fuel to electric energy is a sum loss. But the fact is that CO2 has zero effect on the climate. If you want to discuss that, I would be happy to explain spectroscopy to you.

  • @sewwilson4185

    EV's are a complete waste when we are raping the world to make them. Best car I've had for practical use was a Citroen Berlingo multispace 1.9 diesel. In summer I could use veg oil and a lot less emissions 😉
