Artist Talk with Phil Penman and Dan Tamarkin

Leica Camera and Tamarkin Camera present an Artist Talk with renowned photographer Phil Penman (recorded on Zoom, Thursday, March 24, 2002).
Renowned photographer Phil Penman gives an Artist Talk about street photography, along with Leica Product Specialist & Instructor John Kreidler and Tamarkin Camera’s Dan Tamarkin.
Phil’s work is evocative of Cartier-Bresson, Kertész, Brassai, and Fan Ho, among other greats. In this artist talk, we’ll learn about Phil’s process and style of shooting, and view his images. With a distinct style and “voice,” he captures modern images with a timeless quality in black and white.
About Phil Penman:
UK-born, NY-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the rapid flux of New York City's streets for over 25 years. With clients ranging from The New York Review of Books to The Guardian, he has photographed celebrated living legends, including Jennifer Lopez and Bill Gates, and captured historical moments such as the September 11th Terrorist Attacks. Penman's distinctive style, versatility, and dedication to his craft has won him prestigious awards and exhibitions and distinction as one of the "52 Most Influential Street Photographers" alongside industry legends, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Sebastião Salgado.
His debut book “STREET” launched as the Number 1 new release on Amazon for Street Photography and has since become a best seller and featured at MOMA in New York.

John Kreidler is the East Coast Product Specialist and co-host of Leica’s streaming Tech Talk program on UA-cam. John brings more than 25 years’ experience providing imaging and production insight to professional photographers and enthusiasts alike.
Equal parts, photographer, educator, and trainer, John can frequently be found, giving those interested in Leica products an opportunity to experience them in a real-life situation, during Pro Discovery Days, Leica Store events and Akademie workshops, throughout the country.
An accomplished photographer, his on-going obsession with capturing light and shadow started from an early age. He strives to move beyond the beautiful snapshot and create an image that evokes emotion in the viewer’s mind. Most recently, John’s work was selected to appear in the new book, “Inspiration Leica Akademie”.

About Dan Tamarkin:
Dan Tamarkin is originally from New Haven, Connecticut, where Tamarkin Camera was founded in 1971. Dan has worked extensively as a photographer, theatrical lighting and scenic designer, teacher, performer, writer and raconteur. Dan owns and operates Tamarkin Camera and Tamarkin Rare Camera Auctions, both based in Chicago - "America's Premier Leica Specialist." As a photographer, Dan works almost exclusively with the Leica M camera. A collector of tenor guitars as well as Leica cameras and ephemera, Dan is also an avid outdoorsman: “I take pictures, have adventures, and tell funny stories.”

YES an awesome chat and share! I love to hear the “way” you guys shoot. The sharing about how you think and use the gear helps me a lot. I always want to know how things work and that kind of explaining of your processes helps me relate and hopefully connect with my gear and shooting.
The deepest parts were the honorable relationship-level communication Phil has with everyone he encounters. They are people and not just subjects and he seems to honor them that way, or so he says, and I believe him. I will looking for more of his photographs for sure.
