Added after someone shared this video on the Wyze subreddit:
We don't do "7 minute" reviews here, the majority of our videos are long format. If you (as I've read) don't wanna devote hours of your life into watching a 26 minute video then don't. It's pretty simple. The fact that you are even complaining about the length is stupid. No one is forcing you to watch this. We do not offer refunds. Go cry in your coffee, we delete and block here pretty instantly so it's a complete waste of time to leave a comment b*tching about it :)
The video is segmented into chapters so you are interested in watching you can easily skip to the part you'd like to watch. You can also double the speed playback so I sound like a chipmunk and then it's only a 13 minute video for your impatient self.
We hope the "other details" we covered (again FROM A LOCKSMITH STANDPOINT) other reviewers don't really talk about are a bit useful to some and thank you to those who watched and hit that like if you enjoyed :)
I was actually waiting to see some unbiased reviews of this, so it's awesome to see you checked it out. It seems to work well enough for me to actually pick one up.
I have Wyze cams and have been looking at smart locks, I like this one better than Wyze’s other door lock. I like how it’s not wifi connected and like the fingerprint sensor and keypad. Makes me feel better that an actual locksmith tested it and thinks it’s ok. I might actually pick one up. Like the review.
My father said something I’ve always held close: “Locks only keep honest people out”.
Locks only keep honest people honest is what Ive always said
in Mexico we have a saying: "la oportunidad hace al ladrón" (the opportunity creates the thief)
This saying has some credibility, however, a lot of crooks are just lazy opportunists. If you make it more difficult than average for someone to get into something, chances are it will be left alone by a lot of would be thieves.
Nice sleek design! Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the demo and info, have a great day
Installed it last week and LOVE it!
Just bought one and installed it in under 10 minutes. We don’t have Wi-Fi where I live and it’s one of the few options I found, and prefer a non-Wi-Fi device anyways. Super easy to set up on the app, and already had a brushed nickel handle so that works great. No adjustment to lengthen the bolt needed, the hole was where it needed to be. So far on the first day I love the product.
Great video! Thanks a lot for sharing
You guys are much appreciated
All of the origional made in 1924 door knobs in my restored bungalow are in perfect working order. The one "smart knob" I had fell apart after 5 years, Lol!
Good advice telling the guys not to put them on if they don’t have a key override I don’t know how many times that I’ve had locks like that and how to destroy them because it was no other way in and the customer says don’t you just have a magical way to open it. Lol 😂
I love mine. I’ve had other WiFi locks and haven’t missed that feature. If you need someone to come in while you are away you can create a one time code from a different location. It’s very quiet and very nice.
I don't think you can create a one time code from a different location since it's only Bluetooth connectivity...
Awesome video, can second person in the house also add fingerprint as second person?
is it possible to just drill out the 2 holes slightly bigger if you have to replace the bolt? or is the offset too much?
Good job. Thanks!!!!!
im loving Wyze products lately. if only their cameras would work better with my Nest Hub devices
I’ve purchased this lock. Thank you for your thorough review! Will I have to eventually replace the small 3 volt battery inside of it? And what’s it’s purpose again? I heard you say it for memory or something early in your video while unboxing. Thanks so much and great work!!
Don't know for sure, but I imagine the small battery keeps the codes and fingerprint data alive while the AA batteries are being replaced.
Hope to see a review of the new eufy lock that's coming out
Hey I checked with my Chinese Interpreter (tounge ~n~cheek) Yep Venetian is Black LOL
Honsetly though have been looking for one for my Father in Law and this might be the ticket
Thanks for the review!
Good to see this set up. Great video. You might need to deal with no bronze though. 😂
the aged bronze finish is being pretty quickly switched to matte black now. I guess it’s had its 10 year run which is about the finish trend pattern.
This one sucks though cause the finish is so close, we will be seeing a lot of matte black exterior with all ages bronze interior 🙄 for the next decade
I’m just waiting for bright brass to make a comeback!!! 😂
What materials is it made out of? Can someone just smash key pad to get in easier than a standard consumer dead bolt?
Looks reasonable for the price
Idk about you antique brass was definitely the norm but there is alot of the dark finishes nowadays. This might look ok
What happens if the batteries die when you're out?
Fantastico Senor : > )
I'd guess that the one time codes basically behave like a long list of codes stored in the lock and app, where only the next code will work (this is how the app can give such a code even though it has no communication with the lock). Thus, instead of the thief having a 1 in a million chance of finding your combination by chance, they have double that. Hardly significant.
Agreed with the implementation, but concerned about how they assigned them per device on the manufacturing line. Hopefully it's not "all the devices made today have the same sequence of codes."
Even if random, if it's not a good seed, it's probably something that could be worked out. At the point someone is doing that, though, it'd be easier to just take a hammer to it and open it mechanically.
@@walterdexter9168 Right, I'd assume that it's a deterministic random number generator with a shared seed, and hopefully one of sufficient entropy that's generated when you pair it.
I have a bunch of Wyze cams. I use one to keep an eye on my dad who has a disability. They work pretty great. Gotta buy stock in the company before Elon Musk does that.
Mine will be in tomorrow and I am replacing my almost $200 Ultraloq U-Lock which I have had nothing but problems with!! It would randomly just stop working (usually in the unlocked position and we would leave assuming that it was locking behind us) and finally got that replaced under warranty and then less than a year later my replacement is now saying it is jammed when it doesn't even try to lock or unlock! Then when I contacted them about it they said that the replacement only has a 3 month warranty? Luckily I got the extra Home Depot warranty so I will hopefully be able to return it and get my $180 back and then install this $80 lock (I got on Amazon for faster delivery)... I have several cameras, the watch and sprinkler controller through Wyze and have had no issues with any of them! I do wish and am somewhat concerned that there is no back up key if it dies or something happens...
They wanted to send me one of those to review but we don’t take free locks for review so I can talk about how ugl…I mean how bad they might be :)
@@selock when it worked it was great but with it randomly stopping and needing to be replaced every year or so I think there are better locks out there for $200!!! Plus when it doesn't lock kind of defeats the entire purpose of a lock
How much would it cost to have you install? Lol. It seems easy enough unless something was off with the fitting and Id be screwed
Found that interesting the app said it was connecting to wyze cloud. I thought the point was it's not supposed to connect to the internet
Pretty sure it was having to do that for the setup of it and was basically jumping from the lock to the app to the cloud
Wow if I was a locksmith
Interesting.
how does that one time code work. It must be like the authentication apps and fobs, where there is a list of predefined numbers related to the serial number and then the app always know what the next valid number in the lock is
I’ve been trying to figure that out too!
Yep, it would seem to be the same as an authenticator. You can generate up to 16 one-time codes every 4 hour block of time (e.g. between 8 am and 12 pm, then again at 12:01 pm to 4 pm, etc.). I have a feeling it's the way the algorithm was designed to enable offline functionality - you don't need to be within Bluetooth range to generate codes, which makes sense from a user's point of view.
We're your referring to the Wyze camera hack or was there also a lock hack?
the camera "issue"
@@selock These do look interesting for people that don't want their lock in the cloud. The fact they didn't disclose the camera hacks sooner is worrisome. Also that they didn't fix everything.
Does it have an external 9vdc battery override?
plug in for a battery pack charger, shown at end of video
@@selock But the problem is who carries a power pack around with them? I have an old fingerprint lock from 2009 that has contacts for a 9V transistor radio battery that you can hide somewhere or if needed buy at any store and many gas stations.
My door has a window and it doesn’t look like it will fit. My deadbolt’s right up tight against the window, is there any smart locks available for this situation?
Most all smart locks will need about 3.5" of frame so it doesn't hang over. If the backset of your lock is the standard 2 3/8" check out Level maybe?
Thank you for the no B.S. installation. Sir, could you do a review of the Eufy;and, please try to pick that semi-circular key, or make a new key! The thieves in this area have access to the Chicago gang,so they can make keys.
Thanks for watching. I don’t really pick locks just to pick locks on videos, I only do that on jobs where I need to do that to open something (in other words, this isn’t a “locksport” type channel)
I also only purchased this one because I’m invested in the Wyze ecosystem and was considering it for actual use.
I’ve heard of Eufy and I think I know what you are talking about with “semi circular key” but in the course of business we would just tell the customer they need to order replacement keys through the company they ordered that shi…lock from :)
technically it's safer than the more expensive wifi locks with more features. Those have keyholes to be picked this does not and when it runs out of power there Is a USB to give it power. Opening wifi locks by voice with assistants I don't think is good at all.
I wonder how secure the USB port is though, if it could somehow give someone access or it's purely a power source.
Embrace The Technology
No! Embrace good technology. This is not it.
how do you get in if it does not work
If it fails completely and it's your only door you will be locked out. It has a dead battery boost for a battery pack on the outside. At the end of the video I mention all this along with the part about "if it's your only door, DO NOT use this"
@@selock Dear Sir, I am grateful to have watched this one-year old review. Your review is quite different from others.
I was almost sure I will get this lock until when I heard you cautioned about that one-and-only door access. A question pops up then: with a keyhole backup, isn't it opening the door to someone to pick the lock? Damn, it means I will have to get one with key access over a keyless...
emtek bolt might work..
I’ll have to check one of those too!
sooo not a wyze decision to order :P
I want this lock but i can't get around the fact that it doesn't have a key override.... The kwikset aura seems to fit the bill...bluetooth lock with key override. But so many complaints that the mechanism is super noisy...i wish this had a backup key!
At least it does have the battery bypass underneath! Also the Wyze app should warn you of a low battery!
It’s 1000 times quieter than any Kwikset
@@selock unfortunately i would have no other keyed lock on the house thats whats holding me back...know anything like this one with a key thats quiet?
@@S2000guy probably gonna need to look at Schlage’s Encode if you can find one. Considerably more expensive though
@@selock yeah those are pricey....i do have two entry doors on my house. If i used these on both I'm guessing the chances of them both crapping out at the same time would be slim?
Nice. I was wondering why these were cheaper than the other smart lock actuator that I have and love. No wifi would explain it.
We have dark stuff and put the silver up lock actuator thing on anyway. I put up with it for the convenience of having a keypad and smart functions. 👌You could always buy some bronze paint and hand paint it. It could turn out pretty good. Or see if they have a matching color in the hammer tone paint stuff.
Yeah the new bolt one seems very nice, but technically speaking the old one is better in a few ways. The only downside to the old one is that the keypad is an add-on could be stolen and you need to replace batteries separately I guess.. though that can be an advantage as well because your normal key still works.
The new one definitely looks sleeker though and it's nice how both parts are integrated together if you don't mind ditching the key completely.
what happens if batteries die?
There’s a little plug in for a jump pack shown at the very end of video
@@YD-pl5rn a type c cable from your phone sucks in power, not pushes it out. This would require a little charging pack/external battery and usb cable which most people dont have around. it is a little odd, but i guess at least it gives you an option, if a oddball one. It just might require a trip to the store for most people in worst case scenario. I actually have this little jump starter USB charge in my truck, so for me it likely wouldn't be an issue.
@@YD-pl5rn this is false, i plugged my phone into a laptop via USB A to C and the phone started charging.
@@YD-pl5rn on googling it seems possible, which is news to me, but maybe hit or miss?
@@cryengine_x Some newer phone support "power sharing" my Google Pixel 6 Pro and Samsung S21 both can charge another device or phone when connected together with a USB C cable.
If you by mistake delete you account that will make this or others lock from wyze un usable for any one o they didn't put any of this information on the booklet
Never thought about the fact it doesn't have a key open backup, thanks for that thought!
What I don't like about it, jam a crow bar under the keypad at the top and away it goes. For me, the deadbolt is the only lock to my front door. Door handle has no lock.
in that case, jam a crow bar into any door and pop off the whole door 🥰
I get you, but it looks to be built just like a normal deadbolt. I've seen a few videos showing how easy it is to use a coat hanger to open most deadbolts 🥲
@@MrHeHim What? That doesnt even make sense 😅 It's not the same as a normal deadbolt, obviously, because of the different/flimsier(?) outer housing.
@@cryengine_x if your going to use a crowbar, than you can just pry the door off the frame while your at it
It is built of metal for what it's worth. Obviously the size of the lock and it being flat across the top might allow it but it does sit higher than the actual hole. I think it would be pretty difficult to do actually based on the fact that regular deadbolts "just" cover the hole, and this has a much larger surface area. However you can't really say any "similar" smart lock couldn't be crowbarred as well. Or anything...
@@selock yeah, and then we get into the ever present fact no lock is foolproof given enough time and effort. being a gun guy imo locks are just to give me time to get to a aherm, weapon if I am home and someone is busting in. For that matter there are windows all over the place, including one on the back door within easy reach of the deadbolt controls (granted the backyard is fenced). I've decided this probably isnt a huge concern, and like we say probably could be done as or almost as easily to a standard deadbolt anyway. Or someone (a burly man)can likely kick any deadbolt in easy enough. Again the point is to slow him down (make it take a few kicks) and make as large a commotion as possible realistically! I definitely ran the 3" wood screws into my studs on the strike plate, and also got a reinforced strike plate though, thats easy, cheap, and makes the door much more secure.
not a bad smart dumb lock. lol. Black hardware is in vogue atm but atleast it's better than white. :l
Not made for Canada. Three locks died. 1st one the touchscreen shorted out. 2nd one the lock would constantly beep like it was being touched. 3rd one on the garage jammed inside and bent internally. Do not recommend at all under 6 months old. only kfferes a return with a gift card as a reolacement.
I"m interested to hear what you say, but oh my gosh, stop pacing back and forth carrying the camera while you talk. I'm getting motion sick.
Ok I stopped 🙄 3:00
Too much yapping.
bye!
