Hi! So I was reading several comments and none answered my question. Haha so I am already a licensed attorney. Been practicing for 2 years. (28 years old). I wanted to do it in law school and I just didn’t because I heard it was super hard to get into. Everyone talks about how to get accepted but no one talks about how the life as a JAG is. What’s the work-life balance like? How’s vacation/PTO? How many hours a day do you work? Do you really get weekends off? I know as a civilian attorney I don’t get to enjoy weekends or vacations because I have so many deadlines. The pay is nice but I want work-life balance. Thank you for your service.
I begin law school this Fall. An Air Force JAG has met with us already. I’ll be meeting with the other branches as well, but I haven't heard great things about how JAGS outside the Air Force and Marines are treated. It’s also wild how beautiful Ashley is-very impressive.

@@oceann2838 It is definitely doable, but it is a pretty rough year and you have to be aware that your grades might suffer. If you’re okay with that, it’s totally worth it. At the end of the day, it’s only 9 months of pain and then you are done!

@@oceann2838 No problem at all! You basically have to schedule your law classes around your ROTC classes. For the most part I had all of my law classes on Monday-Wednesday and ROTC on Thursday and Friday. I had to also do some of the ROTC classes independently because they didn’t fit in my schedule. Days are LONG, but it’s definitely manageable. If you want more info I’m always happy to take a call as well!

Hey Salat! Thank you! And yes, I sure can do a video on FLEP and E-FLEP. E-FLEP is a pretty new program, so there isn't a ton out there about it. FLEP is competitive, so I suspect E-FLEP is just as much so since it's a rather expensive investment for the Air Force. Thanks for the suggestion!

I don't know of anyone who's beaten cancer and gotten a waiver to join, but that's not something that I would know unless a person in that situation told me that about it themselves. You might want to ask a recruiter about it. I'd say that if joining is something that you really want, then go for it and make them tell you no.
Great video. Very informative. Could you please give more of a breakdown on the timeline after you are selected? After the board reaches a decision on your candidacy and (assuming you're accepted), what are the next stages? Are you immediately medically evaluated after selection? How long do you wait before shipping out to Maxwell? As for the medical clearance, are you aware if poor eyesight in one eye is a likely disqualifier from service? I know the Air Force is very strict on vision requirements for enlistment generally and doesn't really over waivers for it. Thanks for any further info.

It is the standard bootcamp fitness regime all recruits go through. The bootcamp of whatever branch you go through is what you are expected to go through. Different branches have different bootcamps and slightly different physical requirements

No, for officers, you’ll still be able to call/video chat whoever you’d like in the evenings/weekends. And you’ll have your computer to do academics throughout training, so you can watch shows on weekends. Unless rules have changed from when I came in…

I’ve been looking for this video for a long while now. My ultimate goal for a career the AF. Still need to get my bachelors so I will starting off as enlisted. It wasn’t answered in the video, but are there steps I can take when joining as enlisted while I finish my degree to be on track towards applying for JAG? Is it possible to get my degree, commission and the AF pay for my law school and upon completion, put in a packet for JAG?
To answer your question, yes. You can do this a few ways. 1) If you're looking to enlist first, then commission as a JAG, you're probably interested in E-FLEP, which is a new program that's just like FLEP, but for enlisted members. If accepted, they'll send you to OTS before you go to law school, and once you graduate, you'll begin your service as a JAG. I'll leave a link to a news article explaining it a bit better so you can research it more. 2) If you want to commission as an officer first then retrain as a JAG, then you're probably interested in FLEP. Doing FLEP, though, you'll come in as an officer in a different career field, obviously, then later apply to FLEP, and if you get accepted, you'll go to law school and become a JAG. 3) Another way I've seen this done is for someone who's enlisted to either separate or go Reserves, then go to law school and pay for it themselves, then commission as a JAG and get that JA-SLRP reimbursement (which might not pay off all of your law school loans, but will help). All 3 ways work. I'll say though, getting selected for E-FLEP/FLEP is competitive. What you can do as enlisted now (and even if you choose to commission then apply for FLEP) is to just do the best you can at the job you have so that you can have good performance reports (EPRs/OPRs) to support your package. Hello Ashley. First of all, thank you for making these videos. I found you while searching for people talking about their experience as JAG. I am a current 3L working on my JAG application to the USAF. I am graduating in May (yay!) and taking the BAR in July (no comment). I am currently working on my "Motivational Statement" and was wondering if you had any advice as to how I should go about writing it. Also, how concerned should I be about my GPA? Obviously the higher it is, the more competitive of a candidate you're likely to be; it obviously helps. I did well in undergrad (3.6), but I have not done as well in law school (2.3; maybe a .4 or .5 after this semester?). Is there a good way of addressing this elephant in the room? Or do I not even need to say anything? Or is there already no chance of me being accepted? I have some experience that might help me out, like my internship at my state's Office of the Attorney General, but I'm concerned about this noncompetitive GPA and if it's disqualifying.
Hey there! For the motivational statement, I suppose just be genuine. The military is an entire lifestyle, not just a job. And it’s not an easy lifestyle at that... Why do you want it (rhetorical question)? But think about that honestly to yourself and you’ll find what makes you passionate about it (hopefully). Because you’re not just joining the JAG Corps; first and foremost, you’re joining the military. About the GPA, your interviewer will have your information and probably will have looked at your GPAs. If they want to talk about it, be prepared to address it, but that doesn’t mean you need to bring it up for them. Unless there’s some really compelling reason for the lower GPA, I can’t see how bringing it up would benefit you. Focus on highlighting your strengths and how you’ll be a good fit and an asset to the JAG Corps.
Set proper expectations about what you'll be doing and for how long - working in base legal practicing general law until you're a major, unless you raise your hand to be an area defense attorney or special victim's council, basically the two ways out of base legal for a while for captains. Be square with that sort of work and you should be fine...

Hey there, Esther! This question really comes down to whether she wants to come in as an officer or as enlisted. Those are going to be 2 very different experiences, so she’ll want to weigh the pros and cons of both. But if she wants to do ROTC in undergrad, she could try to get tuition assistance to help pay for her degree, then come in as an officer afterwards. That could afford her a lot more flexibility in choosing where she wants to go to school for her degree. I didn’t go the ROTC route, so she’ll probably want to speak to a recruiter about it.
Sure! The requirement is that you’re a member of the bar of any state or U.S. territory, so which bar you took doesn’t matter as much. You won’t be able to commission until you’re sworn into a bar.

I didn’t hear you mention the AFOQT. So that’s waived if you already have your law degree?
Yeah, unless you do ROTC, direct appointment JAGs don’t take the AFOQT.
Do the JSLR funds, the 65k, is that something you receive yearly throughout your 4 years if you apply?
