  • Power Girl is a DC Comics character known as much for her iconic look and costume just as much if not more than for her history, origin and actual character. Superman's cousin has had quite the journey when it comes to how artists have depicted here, and some think the rationale of how we got here is an urban legend, nay a myth. So here on Casually Comics we attempt to trace the changes in Power Girl's design and see just where it started. Wally Wood? The Justice League? Amanda Conner? Nowhere? Let's see where we end up!

I'd say before we give men larger packages, why don't we have big butt female characters ? Or big calved ? Or big bellied ?
Answer, it's not about reality... it's about fantasy...
Drawing male characters with prominent packages will just lock in the issue of sexualizing superhero characters... just for the consumers who would have an affinity for that, whether they be guys. ... Or gals like Marisa.
There's just a whole big ol' world of body sizes and types out there that go without representation in pop culture. I'll go to my favorite character, Iron Man. In issue #300, Bethany Cabe, wearing a previous model of Tony Stark's Iron Man suit to help combat an unstoppable monster, tells War Machine that "you know I know how to fight." while also complaining that her "breasts are killing me, my hips are chaffed raw, and I've got an itch I don't want to talk about.", which I thought was a pretty compellingly realistic portrayal of a strong female character. I dug it.
But the same was never, well at least in the approximately 90 issues I owned at the time and the several hundred I've read since, portrayed for any of the male characters who ever donned Tony's duds. Happy Hogan and Eddie March never complained that the suit chaffed their shoulders or gave them blisters on their heels or toes, even though two boxers should have had much better developed physiques than a "billionaire playboy".
However, when another female character had a comic book transformation that bucked this trope, the characterization was very different. A character who was horrified and despaired of her transformation and the powers it gave her. And that was Ms.Marvel, Sharon Ventura when she turned into the She-Thing over Fantastic Four issues #310-345. But unlike Jennifer Walters turning into the sexy uber-amazon She-Hulk, Ms.Marvel didn't inherit the stereotypical sexy fantasy body.
I guess she followed the same character arch that Ben Grimm did over his transformation, just in a more condensed series of issues.
My point is that dad-bods and BBWs don't sell comics. Sorry to say.

Just to throw it out there...During the New 52 World's Finest series, George Perez designed a new costume for Power Girl, that completely covered her up, but the running gag was that every couple of issues it was either getting ripped up or somehow damaged usually around the cleavage area if not destroyed all together. I hate when people ask 'who cares.' If you have to ask, then you already know of at least one person who cares in at least some capacity (that being the person you're saying 'who cares' to). There are so many better questions to be asking - 'why do you care? why should I care? why am I still here if I don't care, why am I wasting my time complaining that other people care about something that I don't care about, my life is precious and short and surely there are better things to be doing?'

People who tend to ask "who cares?" are actually secretly interested, but are too ashamed/embarrassed to ask for themselves, so they brush it off like it's "somebody else' problem." It's classic avoidance of personal shame. That desperate attempt to look like "the cool guy" in the crowd.

So I turned 12 in 1979. I did the bulk of my comic reading between 79 and 86 and during that time I picked up a log of back issues, including All Star Comics final run from 58 to 74. I remember Power Girl from that to the JSA/JLA crossovers she was in to the JSA run in adventure comics, her appearances in backup stories with the Huntress in Wonder Woman to her appearances in Infinity Inc. Oddly enough I never really gave her bust size, or the changes to it much thought. At the time there were characters that wore much more revealing outfits in comics (Red Sonja, Vampirella, Tigra to name just a few) and I always just took her look as the way it was supposed to be. My only real question about it was, at least back then, was how if she and Supergirl of Earth-1 were supposed to be the same person, why did they have such different builds. It isn't like Now where Supergirl is portrayed ad being a teenager, back in the 80's she was an adult in her 20's, roughly the same age a Power Girl. So that disparity always seemed an odd thing to me since other characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Bat Woman and other identical characters looked more alike. That for me was a bigger question than "why are her boobs getting bigger". Although in later years I will admit that after having it brought to my attention I did have a passing curiosity but I had just attributed it different artists interpretation of the character. I will say this though...the whole subject did give us one of the best references to the matter in comics, I am of course referring to the scene at the end of an Elseworlds story called Kingdom Come where Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are all having dinner in a superhero themed restaurant and when Batman asks the waiter what cut of chicken is in the sandwich named after Power Girl the waiter replies..."the breast". That moment gave me a great laugh and considering the serious nature of the story that scene was an epilogue to it was certainly necessary. To be honest, over all, I think the whole issue surrounding the size of her bosom has been blown way out of proportion (pun intended). I mean yes that aspect of the character has become such an integral part of the character that it cannot be ignored, and yes it was a curiosity for many, but now that we have our answer (and yes this all did answer my own questions as to the differences between her appearance and that of her Earth-1 counter part as well.) There are so many more aspects to the character than this and her character history is so....convoluted ( I know you did a video on that as well and that is my next watch) that maybe it's time for people to take the the answers for what they are and focus on other aspects of the character for a while.

She is also an interesting character who always walks the edge between owning her body, sexual desires and revealing costumes and being objectified. For me it really depends on how the writer depicts her own attitude towards the issue. Two creative efforts finally sold me on Power Girl as an interesting character:
    - Palmiotti and Conner's take on Karen, her plastique, her attitude towards it and also her place in the superheroic community.
    - Alex Ross' visual take on her in Kingdom Come and later in JSA. It showed she could be badass and no one gave a hoot about her chest.
Since then, she's rating in the top characters in DC for me, along with Superman, Wonder Woman and Dick Grayson, who are my absolute faves.
The various versions of why her chest kept growing in her drawings is a fun fact, and I seriously don't see it as a demeaning to women, because Karen is in on the joke and she plays it off.
Now, what the New 52 did to Starfire... that's another story, lol.

These two videos were an educational experience for me. I saw Powergirl come out of the multiple universes thing and took her original appearance as a comic book poke at exaggerated female body types. Maybe that still is a part of what happened. I broke down and took an interest in the character in spite of my loathing of the whole multiple universes mess because there started to be some meaningful discussion of whether her bust was a problem right in the text of the comic story itself, to me that was relevant and courageous. Someone was standing up and saying, "unusual bodies exist and there is nothing wrong with having one." I went from, "ugh, another revamp of another cannon character," to "oh wow, an actual discussion of something important in the real world, let's see how this goes." While I am still not a fan of exaggerated female bodies, I have come to accept Powergirl as just what she claims to be, a woman who happens to have an unusually large set and isn't ashamed of that. I'm actually a fan because of her stance on the subject, and as a result, I'm over the "magnitude of her endowment."

A superhero should be recognizable at all angles, or even by shadow. When Batman looms over a criminal you can identify the bat ears right away. Power Girl has significant curves, and short blonde hair. I like the fact that artist would draw Supergirl differently than Power Girl or Nightwing from Batman. Maybe you should talk about the first bat silhouette or at least some of the best ones.

You didn't go into her newer comics, Power Girl explained the situation. When she came over from earth 2 and met this earth's Super Man and realized how little he had to do with this earth's Super Girl. Compared with her relationship with her earth's Super Man and how close they were. She felt like she was missing a peace of herself, that thing that made her super, she had a hole in her heart, she was missing her family. She finally has a heart felt conversation with Super Man telling him that she feels like an outsider and something is missing from her. (Then she asks him to fill her hole.)

@Conrad Ferrus That's not true at all. There's reason behind everything, even if you don't understand it. My point is that comic book characters are as diverse as people, because the ones writing and drawing them are just as diverse.

I agree with you broadly, but the nuance of having diversity without it being the focus is lost when you force everything to be explained.
I'm dead set against token characters, but if a characteristic is tertiary to the character instead of the focus, there's no explanation needed. It's only a problem when the character is horrifically shallow to start.

I'm 43 and have been reading comics since I was about 13. As a guy who loves super hero comics, I will often buy a comic that has a good pinup cover - as such I have bought a lot of comics featuring Power Girl over the years. The best story in my memory was the New 52 run which lasted 2-3 years (it's been a while). That comic told a cohesive story, had great art, and established her character a well. If they could make a comic like that continuously featuring Power Girl, they would have a customer for life.

Power Girl has always been one of my favorite characters and it's just good to have her get the attention she deserves. I mean, not always about her boobs, but you and Amanda Conner are right, they're a part of who she is. And if she suddenly looked like Kate Spencer (Manhunter), it'd be super weird. Yet both characters are awesome. It just takes all types.

Dennis C, I was just gonna comment on that! As Sasha informs us, after Wally Wood introduces the "window" and the size of Power girl's chest, then of course later artists are told to tone it down, until this initial run of the character in All-Star comics comes to an end in 1978. I don't know if much was even done with the character in the interim, but in 1989, Justice League Europe #1 premieres. P.G. is featured with a low-cut top---the window has not returned yet. But the way Bart Sears is drawing her, suddenly her chest is MUCH larger. I remember it was quite the controversy in the letters pages at the time. The diamond shaped window we're shown in the video is from the END of the Justice League Europe run. That may be the return of the "window," but the size of her---attributes---was amped up to about their modern proportions in issue #1. Wally Wood may have started it, but we have Bart Sears to either thank or blame for the way Power Girl is drawn now.

Your power point that everyone has a different p.o.v. is so incredibly refreshing to hear. So many different persepctives being brought to bare er, bear, on this. Also that the artists would all have different motivations and reasons for portrayal. I would say that the window of opportunity hear is to realize that this particular issue has been much enlarged simply by the attention focused on it. In other words; the more attention; the larger, as in some kind of crazy Castenedas novel - the power of the nagual womans ring portal. Eventually a new CRISIS-style crossover reboot will be based solely on the Girl of Powers portal ring; and Darkseid will include it in his antilife equation.

It is refreshing to see someone take a level headed, reasonable and engaging approach to this subject. I had been convinced this was a myth but you have shown evidence that it is not. What passed for big and over the line back then wouldn't move the needle now and the guy had some baggage and reputation coming in so he probably had people looking over his shoulder anyway.
What made me think it was a myth is that every other woman in her comic was drawn exactly the same way with the same sized bust IIRC, so it wasn't like she stood out in any way other than being the MC.
Still, bottom line is, I wish people would just be okay that she is busty and probably maybe the bustiest hero and that is part of her look and character. To change it or demand it be changed of ask why it isn't changed is just as silly as asking that Superman or Batman be drawn as skinny, or short, or chubby or any other body type. None of these people would do that, so I don't get why a woman with a big chest goes under such scrutiny and disdain just for existing.
Give her nothing less than G cups and let's go.

How do you feel about Cat Grant?
She was another DC character traditionally drawn with with a large bosom but was depicted as a very sexy character.
The comic art accentuated her cleavage (decolletage) and made quite a few jokes.
There was even a panel where Supergirl is staring at Cat Grant with her X-Ray vision because she detected "weird plastics" in her chest.
Tracy Scoggins portrayed Cat Grant on Lois & Clark and although I haven't watched any current Supergirl TV episodes, I did think it an interesting choice to cast Calista Flockhart.
Calista Flockhart is famous, especially from her Ally McBeal days, for having a very thin physic.
Calista Flockhart is an excellent actor but I wonder if it was a deliberate decision not to cast someone like Christina Hendricks, and actively refrain from that aspect of Cat Grant's comic book depiction.

I do think it’s a bit lame to intentionally cast someone who doesn’t embody (no pun intended; okay, pun intended) a character’s look. To go in the opposite direction is just insulting, I think. Casting Calista Flockhart doesn’t make any sense to me. However, casting Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, rather than someone as big-breasted as Lynda Carter is fine, since Gal’s body type isn’t a total 180 from Lynda’s; it’s just less breasty and more athletic.

    • @richardmark9161
      @richardmark9161 4 роки тому

@@timopper5488 That wasn’t my point at all.
I can’t think of many other mainstream female superhero or comic book characters where chest size is made a topic of discussion and part the character background like Power Girl and Cat Grant.
Artists over the years have changed the design of characters like Wonder Woman or Catwoman at will. They alternate between slim and athletic to athletic and voluptuous or somewhere in between without a large bust size being a point of contention in the comics and portrayals to the point where it is discussed in detail and even lampooned by the other characters within storylines.
With Power Girl and Cat Grant cleavage are the “Elephants in the room“
Not only does the reader and audience notice that Power Girl and Cat Grant have are large but they are almost always drawn to accentuate that attribute and has for the most part become a character trait as well as a physical trait. That doesn’t necessarily seem to be the case with other female characters.
Yes, the reader will notice if Wonder Woman gets a major physical re-design but it isn’t always necessarily addressed in the story.
Wonder Woman and Catwoman as well as almost every other major female character in comic books may have very often been depicted by an artist as having a large bust but I honestly can’t recall where that has been a constant topic of discussion like it is with Power Girl 👧🏼
I also think Calista Flockhart is a very good actor. I just found it humorous as it appears the production purposely chose to eliminate that physical trait from Cat Grant with an actor who is famously very very slim and considerably smaller. It's like Wolverine being 5 feet tall in comics but he is played by 6' foot 4" Hugh Jackman. They didn't go 5' 10" or 6" they went 6' 4". vast difference. Same with Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. The Jack Reacher in the novels was written as being close to 7' feet tall. Tom Cruise is maybe 5' 6" lol
