Hey, Rexx. Don't know if you read these comments still but I view experimental watercolor painting as halfway between traditional and abstract. And I LOVE it. I never used the spray water bottle before. That's a wonderful trick I'll try immediately. I love to paint with paper towels. You can really get some amazing effects with them. THANK YOU.

Hi Brian: I do read all comments. Yes, experimental watercolour is fun and a very creative way to paint. I'm finding more and more ways to do paintings that end up looking very representational but were done with the spirit and techniques of a more experimental approach. Happy painting.

Really enjoyed that. I need to goof off and just have fun like that! Also, I just started with a small spray bottle that had eyeglass cleaner in it. I thought it would be good if I'm painting plain air since it small. Thanks again for a great workshop video.

Hi Rex, Many thanks for replying. I think mine was a Daler Rowney 1" made in Japan, and, of course, can't get one here any more. Mine is in such bad shape and I am mortified that I cannot get buy another. It had just the right spring and tension for my painting. I hate using sable as I am against animals being bred for this purpose (is the gold eries real sable?) and so mine was a synthetic brush and worked perfectly. Again, thank you for the info. on the needle brush and shall look all this up. All very helpful thanks. KT

    Hello Rex
where did you source that clear handled flat brush please? Mine has worn away as it is so well used, and is on its last legs and can't find one in the UK, desperate!! Also, your needle brush, what make is that, I have riggers but that looks wonderful. Many thanks

Hi Katie: Unfortunately I lost that brush when I was out painting but I found another one almost the same at the local art shop here in Calgary. It doesn't have a manufacturer listed but it does say 1" Gold Sable, series 850 made in Japan. The needle brush is one of my new favourites. I was inspired to get it by watching Alvaro Castagnet. He sells his signature model from his web site but I got this one, again at the local art shop. It's a #8, H.J. Series 681, Needle Point. I've tried another version made by Rosemary Brushes in the UK but I like this one better.
      Hope this helps.
      Rex

Hi Rex, very hard to get back into painting again with the lockdown situation, but your video has helped, as I was was trying to free myself from a rigid painting approach. Any tips in relation to using less expensive paper to practice on? Are you going to down load more videos, as I noticed comments are a couple years old.

Hi Gus: You're right. I haven't posted on UA-cam for a while. Regarding paper I'm going to suggest against going for cheaper or student quality paper. This kind of paper often just doesn't take water in a predictable and interesting way. My experience has been that with student quality paper you're often fighting the paper and you do not get the benefits of what happens on the top quality paper. So even if it is more expensive I would always use the pro paper. Arches is my preferred one particularly Arches 140 lb rough. There are others like Winsor & Newton and many others that are all professional. I find that by the time I have painted on both sides of the paper which I do for playing around it's not really a huge financial hit. I get a full sheet of Arches for about $11 CDN and I make it go a long way. Good luck. If you're interested check out my full Experimental Watercolour video ua-cam.com/video/OKwTH03ASJY/v-deo.html
