The area in my wood shop near the CNC machine has become very cluttered. I would really like to build a storage system in this location to help store all of the CNC tools and jigs. In addition, I have always wanted to make a place to store all of the screws, nuts, and bolts in the shop. Right now these things are scattered about in different locations and it's oftentimes hard to find the right fastener when I need it. The storage system I would like to make is a series of 4' tall by 16" square boxes. These can be cut from a 4’ by 8’ sheet of plywood with very little waste. I can hang these boxes on the wall with my French cleat system. I can separate the boxes with space for larger items to be stored between the boxes. It’s a little bit as though the boxes are the solids or the positive space and the space between the boxes makes a void or the negative space. This creates a system for larger and long items as well as very small items and everything in between.

Frank takes the worst job in the shop - cleanup, and makes it take even longer by adding stop motion just because he loves us
turns it into youtube content you mean :)
Because we love him*
Frank's video work has been so dear to me throughout the years. He's helped me cope with my depression when it got bad. The sheer attention and care that emanate from his videos have been a balm on my soul. Thanks, again, Frank
Wow, very strong comment.
Same here. Woodworking and mountain biking. It's therapy for me.
Frank: Here is my modular, extendable, customizable storage solution...
IKEA: Heavily taking notes...
Yep. IKEA Sektion can work, but if you have the tools Frank has, and that IKEA is closed (in-store), I would build them. (Sektion is fast if your need 5-6 cabinets, and can hang easily on metal cleat. And doors are cheap, with easy to setup hinges. But you are looking at ~$25-45/cabinet, plus more for hinges, doors, rail, , still cheaper than white laminate, shelf-pin jig, etc)
I'd love to know what percentage of your viewers watch the video in its entirety... I know that this is one of the few channels where I'm always engaged and watch to the end!
No Audience retention
data on this video yet. most of mine AR graphs drop quickly to about 70% then slope to between 60 and 50%. then drop off at the the Squeaky clamp. so almost everyone who gets past the first minute or so stays for the whole video.
@@frankmakes that's incredible! Thanks for continuing to entertain and teach us! I love the squeaky clamp, but I do drop off once it appears 🤣
Howarth day is always a special treat. Thanks for another great video Frank.
I really appreciate the amount of time and attention to detail you put into every video. The way that you can make cleaning (one of the least fun things to do in a shop) in turn it into something entertaining shows your skill. Keep up the amazing work.
14:18 "I made a few drawers"
I see at least 24 drawers. Oh Frank, you're the best!
14:22 and filled them with army men? Lol.
Whoa, it just occurred to me that Frank is related to Mary Poppins. Just a snap of his fingers and the shop cleans itself.
He's like Mary Poppins ya'll!
Hey Frank, you should add a rolling library ladder to this setup to reach those tallest drawers! Great design!
I'm from the UK, and with the price of nice plywood being what it is here, this looks like hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of £s worth of plywood. It's why I have the old wall units from our kitchen hanging in my garage as storage. I'd love something custom to my needs like this.
Wish I had a shop do all my woodwork on my front path love from England
There are 20+ folks in this world that have no soul. Who doesn’t like a video from Frank?!?
Well done Sir!
In These Crisis times franks Voice is so nice and calming. I live your Videos, keep on going and stay healthy
The idea to use the inverted cleat for the shelves to give the system more rigidity is just brilliant. Terrific idea.
9:20 "I get 9 and a quarter inches, which was kind of nice, that I got a somehwat round number." Ah yes, the tried-and-true "I got lucky" imperial system 😂
There's always one of you in the comments. Always. It isn't endearing.
23.5 cm
@@bucyrus5000 No!!! 235mm..No fractions, no decimal points, one unit.. easy!
@@corvus1238 Almost true. 23.5cm & 235mm are both fractions... of a meter. Just as an inch is a fraction of a foot.
Yes, I am bored today...thought I'd get unnecessarily technical just for fun.
I realise that I am entering this debate unnecessarily but here goes. I have used both metric and imperial my whole life. I am australian, and went through elementary school when we used imperial. We converted to metric in 1974 as I was entering high school. I am measurement system bilingual. There is no way I would ever use the imperial system as a choice. Imperial is convoluted and cumbersome. Metric is superior. The whole world knows this, that is why we all changed. .. except the USA
that shop is like woodworking heaven.
It's a good day in these dire times when you can open up your You Tube feed as you've got a new Frank Howarth video to watch. Hope and pray that you and your family are all well and safe, Frank.
We batch tons of parts on our 5x8 shopbot at work. We use an 1/8” compression bit and you can do a full depth of cut on 1/2 and 3/4 birch ply when you set the feeds and speeds right. We don’t have a vacuum table. The sawdust is packed around the part and keeps it secure... hope that helps
Thanks, Frank. It’s always a pleasure to see your work.
This guy must use more plywood per capita than anyone else in north america!! Very curious about building the drawers. That thin ply can be a pain in the butt.
The never ending quest for storage space and organization... Great system. Thanks for sharing!
my favorite thing about frank’s organization storage projects is how versatile and customizable they are.
If you can work jigs into everything you do it will make the process of production many times faster and easier.
I have a jig set up for producing cabinets. I just slot in the two ends that form a perfect square and just screw them together. I can produce a kitchen worth of cabinets in a day and then face frame in the second day.
That's a great idea for kitchen cabinets. You should patent the system. Imagine, a completely fast removable and interchangeable kitchen cabinet system.
All I can say is that Frank must get one hell of a discount on birch ply.
Another useful treat. Thanks Frank, we need you now more than ever.
From not much storage to plenty of storage. Might be a world record number of drawers when Mr. Frank is done.
Watching one of Frank's videos is always an eye opening treat! 👍👍😉😉
Another excellent system from the #1 mastermind of creativity, on my list of creative masterminds!
Hi Frank. This is the first time I have heard of plastic nails. I need to check these out. Great video.
You make the BEST projects. I love the way your brain works and I love your videos
It’s always educational to see how you attack woodworking problems. Thank you and stay well!
Dream workshop
your shop is outta sight. Thanks for all the work, Great Job!
Another smart shop upgrade Frank ... You are an All-Star !!! :-)
I think I your priorities and vision completely incredible I am 27 and am learning thrue trial and error with limited tools time and budget but I aspire to create function in a very engineer type of way. and enjoy upgrading my space more so than building finished Peace of furniture/art and I really think you're videos are my favorite to watch lately. keep up the good work.
"I made a few drawers..." [ accidentally discloses his plastic army man collection ]
Another terrific shop enhancement project, Frank! You never cease to amaze us. Please keep those ideas and methods of work comin'!!
Again, it is liberating to not be bogged down by the impressive blowout of that dovetail bit. A Frank day is always a good day. Thank you Sir.
One shot for cleat, double for french cleat. Soft drinks ofcourse!
Oh Frank: we stand on guard for thee!!!! Thanks for another amazing production and project. I have been hitting the shop daily, using up the scrapwood, loving it. Your channel is a constant source of inspiration, ingenuity and skill. Thank you for continuing to display the best we can be.
Amazing simple but clever system. You have inspired me to go sort my workshop out. Thanks Frank excellent video.looking forward to next 👍👌
Frank, your ingenuity is amazing!
Thanks Frank. This is just what I needed today. Hope you and your whole family are well.
Thank you for the upload. I always enjoy watching you work and love the range of projects you produce. And I've probably said this before on one of your previous videos, but your little giggles always make me smile and warms my heart.
Sending love to you and your family from the #UK 💙💙
I find your videos so relaxing. Binge watching them in the uk. I'm a trained cabinet maker but haven't the money to put together my own workshop so watching your videos makes me happy. Hopefully someday I'll get some machinery. 😁
Sunday just got better!
You have an amazing mind for conceptualizing the project and making an art piece out of shop fixtures. Thank you, Frank, for sharing. I cannot wait for the next video!
Felix
Frank, another well executed plan. I always look forward to the different projects that you come up with and how you come up with the solution. Thanks for sharing.
If there is an Oscar Award for you tube Frank should have several.
I think it’s so awesome the collection of different things that you’re skilled at. I’d say it’s a fairly rare combination to be great at wood working, cinematography with incredible video editing, and the graphics you design (not to mention your stop motion animations that seem so smooth.)
Wow, what a great storage system. Although the top drawers do look really high up requiring ladder access each time. I am so envious of your shop, especially the CNC router. A real joy to watch your videos - the production quality is amazingly good.
I for one ( I'm really in good company here!) am acutely aware how much effort you put into these videos and I'd like you to be aware how much I appreciate your efforts. Best quality wood project videos on the Internet . Thanks frank!
Im really glad you add commentary to the vids. Its like the cherry on top of an already terrific cake 👍🏻
Frank your videos never disappoint... I absolutely love watching you work and solve problems... thanks for making great videos!
Thanks Frank, that's impressive. Now I'm going to go out to the shop, stare at the wall and think about this.
Nice job! I like these videos the most; using the shop to improve the shop.
A Frank video always lifts my spirits! Thank you!
That is quite the organization product and as always your editing skills are absolutely pro grade.
Gosh, is that French cleat system going to take the weight? I would have thought not. Good luck!
Smudger Dave French cleats are incredibly strong. The force on them is all straight down compression, very little lateral or torque. So, the weight gets pretty evenly distributed in line with the wall.
Only if it's fastened to the wall good enough. I'm sure Frank has it fastened good enough. The shear strength of a screw depending on what type of screw will be anywhere from 200 pounds on up. So if there are 3 or four screws per cabinet width your looking at a whole lot of capacity. Throw in the strength of the glue with the screws and it'll hold alrighty.
I was thinking the same thing. They could take the weight, but seems like an uncomfortable amount of load with the fully loaded drawers. Maybe a good solution here would be to have feet on the lower cabinets, as these will probably have the heavier stuff in them. Easy enough to add the feet later on too.
Saw a 290 pound dude hang from a french cleat cabinet already full of paint, wd40, and engine oil once, so probably 340 pounds all told. I'm no architect, but I'm guessing it'll be fine. As I understand it the most important thing is how and what you've used to fasten the cleat that's in the wall, because any glue/screws/nails will always fail before the cleat does. Frank installed that cleat system forever ago, it runs the entire perimeter of his shop, and it's directly tied into the studs with thick wood screws that probably have a sheer strength of over a thousand pounds. He's already been using it to hang tons of heavy shit, such as the bowl blanks directly above this system.
Interesting because my thought was the same. My inner voice is saying they might *not* be strong enough fully loaded up...
Great video Frank... I would on comment that in my experience, I found I hate trying to get into small shelves that are lower than 18 inches from the floor. I usually put the larger stuff low, and smaller up where my lousy eyes have a shot of seeing what I am looking for!!! thanks!
Hi Frank, I have watched a few of your vids now, the clean up in this one made me chuckle, another quality project, thanks for taking the time to inspire guys like me to make stuff, love your shop it's amazing.
Hi Frank
When you talked to me about this project last autumn, I didn't realize it would be this ambitions !!!
Please take care !
It's bigger and taking longer than I had thought too. ha ha. Stay safe
Super-inspired here! I was aghast at the price and time investment of drawer slides to organize my workspace right up until this video. Thank you. It's magnificent.
The master at work. You’re like a chess player - always thinking through several moves ahead.
You would call Frank a “Methodical” thinker/worker. I was taught that back when I started out hanging book doors(milling from scratch blank doors). This Philosophy has served me well through out my 41 year Carrier as a Finish Carpenter. Greg
Wow so cool. Nice to have a full hardware store in your shop. : ) Mahalo for sharing!
I love the way your mind works Frank!
Frank, you like the French Cleat system. I built one set of shelves/drawers similar, but put them on casters so I can roll the fasteners and certain general tools to the various workbenches. My other shelves are floor standing with no weight hanging from the wood framed walls. Nice video. Thanks. Jon
Great video. Thanks for sharing Frank! Looking forward to seeing your drawer jig in action :)
Great looking storage solution Frank! I can see, this took a LOT of work to build but will improve the organization immensely. Looking forward to your next video to see how this turns out.
Let me tell you what! Your great works always make me impressed! Hope you being safe and happy! Thanks!
Great build Frank. Thank you so much for making your videos !
07:30 I so need you to come declutter and clean up my mess... As a logistician and having worked in many warehouses and shops for 40 some odd years, it's amazing to see your mind at work building this. Can't wait to see the end result. Take care and stay safe.
It was excellent. 👍😎
A tip: apply wax on the sides of the drawers to slide better and avoid wear.
sorry my english ... is from google translator 😁
Perfect English, no worries my guy.
I appreciate all that work. I did a 30' wall of floor to ceiling cabinets at my moms place. Took me like a year to build it all.
Very nice work Frank!
Wow, I can believe it
Wish there was a way to post pictures.
Love the cleat system🤓!! Never to much to change if need be. Good to see you again Frank😎
I have a challenge for you Frank! You know the iconic KFC chicken bucket? Make it out of wood! Have the light and dark stripes with some sort of circular inlay on the side. It would be a fun novelty gift in these gloomy times. I love you work, thanks!
Hi Frank, I love the way your mind works!! Have you thought about making a rolling ladder on a track (like in a library), to get to the upper drawers😊👍🏻
Would love to see that 👍🏽💙
He would have to, I can't imagine having to put on stilts is somehow more efficient.
UA-cam should add a "gobsmacked" button for your builds Frank, your work and production ethic is in a different league.
Wow, that's a lot of storage. enough to empty a whole hardware store and more. I'll know where to go if I need a left handed 9 1/4'' widget. Frank is sure to have one in there somewhere :)
Plastic nails? Man that's some next level thinking for how to keep something fastened to the CNC table. But I hope you're loaded up as far as lumber for projects, the coming months might get a bit boring for you and us waiting for a project :D Stay healthy.
Frank, your ideas continue to amaze me. Thanks for sharing.
What an awesome tablesaw! Serious surface!
Sure am looking forward to your technique to building the drawers. Thank you for the ideas in this video as well. Stay safe and healthy!!
You're going to need to build a library ladder now!
Great shout! Haha
That would be handy
@@frankmakes I look forward to the video.
Thanks for the videos frank
Amazing job Frank as usual.
Dat ziet er georganiseerd uit en mooi gefilmd zoals gewoonlijk .
Vriendelijke groeten uit Nederland .
jaapkees drijver ja, mooi- prima. I live very near Frank, but work in NL.
Very nice storage boxes, Frank!
looks like you also need to consider a library ladder, for the items in the top shelves.
Absolutely amazing. Great work. I was inspired bye you turning bowls to get into lathe work. Set up my table. Got my chop saw ready. Experimented with crap wood making glue ups for bowls. Started looking for a lathe, then BANG, i realized something. You cant just turn bowls in your garage where all your cars, tools, golf bags etc are. You need a confined area and dust collection. Thus, i need to slow the whole process down. LOL
What a fantastic job looks amazing thanks for sharing. 🍺🍺👍👍😷
Well done Frank!....as usual. It does seem as though the lower boxes are close enough to the floor to make sweeping difficult....maybe I am blind in my right eye as well as not being able to see out of my left eye. :-) you should see me drive!
Great work as always, it’s a better day when we get a video from Frank 😁👍
Frank this is a beautiful storage setup.
Absolutely Beautiful Frank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is a brilliant shelving system.
Awesome build. Plenty of storage space now.
Love the project, wish I could get my old man to do this in our shop, but his old and set in his ways lol. Also mite want to put a little felt on the bottom of the draws at the slide points, to help them slide when you start felling them up.
Great video Frank.
I love your organization.
It's always a pleasure to watch you work Frank :)
