You have pickerel and a musky, why not complete the set with a northern pike?

Musky and Pike eat each other in the wild. Its why you almost never find Muskie and Pike in the same body of water

Up north muskie and pike are together all the time. I also have no doubt that they will eat each other if possible. Pike are cannibalistic so there's no reason to think they wouldn't eat a smaller muskie.

I had 3 Muskie about 20 years ago living in my pool with some painted turtles and some 9 inch blue gills. They got about 30” so I let them go back in the lake I got them from. They are fun to watch eat. I should make a pond out of pool again. Lol

I so appreciate you commenting on how you like to scape your tanks towards natural habitats of what's in them. Drives me nuts how so many of these fish-tubers dont worry about that. In my humble opinion if we decide to keep any fish in our homes in tanks it's our responsibility to try our best to make the fish feel like they are living in a smaller version of home. Dosnt matter imo if the fish are tank raised or wild caught still should go out of our way to replicate natural habitats.
Especially those of us who keep stingrays! Sand is so cheap compared to the comfort level it provides stingrays. I cant stand seeing fish kept in plain glass boxes basically, even in quarantine tanks. Especially when and if the keeper has more than enough means to provide it.

You and me both. I've scoured You-Tube and I can't beleeeve how many channels actually make a case for bare tanks and having no plants (fake or real) gravel or substrate in their tanks. I mean, these bare tanks lack personality, drama, and warmth. if you ask me, i think these bare tank aficionados are just plain lazy and don't want to deal with cleaning their tank.

Told ya that Musky would grow ridiculously fast! Awesome to see him getting a big upgrade! I've never been able to keep musky in a pond/tank that big. I kept 2 in a 220 gallon and I had to release them into a buddies private lake when they hit 20 inches. Awesome idea with the netting and cling on hooks.

    • @SCFishKeeping
      @SCFishKeeping  4 роки тому

I knew the Muskie would grow quick... But he's exceeding my expectations!! Having that extra space in the 125 caused him to explode! Can't imagine how big he will be in 6 weeks in this pool!

I have a 2000 gal pond in my backyard - I have had several varieties of wild caught freshwater fish stocked over the past 12 years. I installed two underwater video cameras and I get to watch all the activity from the comfort of my living room. I have found that the only way fish will thrive is if I catch them as fingerlings - adult fish seem to stress out and eventually perish. Very cool hobby - keep the videos coming.

  • @stevenhall8964

Do a mixed Sunfish set up, I once had a 150 gallon tank that i scraped with wood ,rocks and live plants and stocked with 2 little bluegill, one green Sunfish, 2 Texas Banded Sunfish one Red Breast, and a Warmouth! I caught them all as wild fish except the Texas Bandeds which were a gift. They all actually got on together nicely with very little aggression even after they all grew larger( I'm thinking because they all grew up together except the Texans which were adults when I got them and even so the Bluegill were already the same size!) They all would school together kind of circling the tank making half circles and up -down variations, and sometimes when resting they would all just float suspended at varying depths about the same distance from each other, the Green Sunfish didnt school with the rest after it started getting bigger and had a log hollow that he hung out in coming out now and then and making rapid dashes to and fro for a dizzying moment and then back to his log, the Warmouth NEVER schooled with the rest preferring to hang out at a pile of rocks that had 2 big plants next them on each side in the back right hand corner and would come out now and then to make a slow cruise around the tank half heartedly chasing some of the others as if to say " that's right bitches run, I'm the baddest mofo in this tank!" Then back to his rocks. I also had a green Corydoras Cat, and some native snails that must have got in on one of the plants I snagged out of the creek for the tank, I had a very hard time controlling them as they multiplied faster then anything I've ever seen, so 4 times a year I would put All the fish in a kiddie pool, or the Bathtub a couple of times, remove ALL THE pebbles I used for substrate ,and took all the Rocks and wood out along with the plants and start over scrubbing the tank thoroughly baking the pebbles boiling the rocks, replacing the rocks and sticking to store bought plants, and then put everything back, and still the snails would somehow reappear!! In smaller quantities each time but I never could completely eradicate them. They were like the COCKROACHES of the fish tank!!!

I was 15 years old so of course I wanted killers so I had 2 Oscar’s, 3 red belly’s, and the ultimate freshwater killer that’s now illegal…the giant snakehead. Let me just say I came home one day and there was only one Oscar and two snakeheads left….they were the most vicious fish I have ever seen. Unfortunately they both jumped out the tank and died. The Oscar was left standing.

  • @Paul-cq2we

Great fish but can I make a couple suggestions? I think you should get some bells or better yet those little electric alarms that gets triggered if something touches it so the net on top of your musky pond if he should ever try and jump out you could be alerted if you are in the house. I really like the electric ones because they will beep up to every 10 seconds. Also did you ever think about getting the few different types of pumpkin seeds? Lots of nice coloring in many of them and they also will hybridize and you can come up with some fantastic looking fish. Some of them will do this in the wild also. One other thing, did you ever think about getting a northern pike? They are a lot more aggressive than muskies when it comes to stalking prey and they won't get nearly as large which can also be a neat thing. Your little pickerel I don't know if you knew this or not but there are many different species in North America and somewhere really cool looking. Anyway that's all I have! Great channel!

I have kept grass pickerel before. Very cool fish for people who want to keep pike but dont have the space to keep their larger cousins. A suggestion when you scape their tank. They love lots of vegetation with slow moving water. I would also avoid any tree stumps or objects that could have sharp edges on their surfaces. I had a pickerel injure itself pretty bad chasing a minnow and missing the strike hitting the edge of a tree stump.

No nicknames today, you intrigued me with a suggestion for a video. DIY pond filters make me geek out. I know it's a simple concept (size + flow + mechanical + biological) but everyone does it different. Not just your setup but also maintenance.

No nicknames?! Who is this..... 😂
It took me awhile to figure out how I liked building these filters. But I found a simple and easiest method that even I could build!

@@SCFishKeeping yeah but it's pinky vs poly, volcanic vs plastic, 1 55 gallon vs 3, water changes. Just do the video.
