Geometry nodes are basically the reason I gave up on learning blender, it's like learning mandarin. But when I see your gumroad I realise it is a blessing that you genuinely make it accessible for anyone willing to at least try expressing ideas.
You don't have to learn Geometry Nodes, other than the basics like scattering sugar on a donut. There are many more things you need to learn first, like basic modeling, lighting and so on.
@@erik.... You're right, I believe the frustration comes from simply being too impatient to reach a remarkable and worthy level while using the coolest addons combined w/ basic knowledges
@@pianoatthirty I wouldn't say it's a waste of time. There are many simple every day things you can do so much quicker in GN than regular keyframing. But there's a difference between basic understanding which will take a few hours for someone who already knows Blender, and advanced use.
I feel like I'm just going to skip geometry nodes. Yes, they look awesome. But there are so many other aspects which I would like to master (and which confuse me far, far less).
Dude, i just wanted to let you know that this is probably one of the most isnpiring things i've ever seen done until now with Geometry nodes, Shaders, Math etc. Following you since i've found your painterly shader and was wondering if you would try something more complex with it. Glad i was right :)! Really amazing stuff! This solution is far superior to the older one, but the older one has probably set you up to create this. Now... we just need a printer from geometry nodes for real life!
This is truly one of the most creative things I've seen in a blender video. The fact that each stroke follows the form is truly remarkable. Maybe I'm over reacting a bit, but I've been using blender for roughly six months and I've never thought you could do something like that
This is what happens when bright, talented creative people work hard to solve a problem. This is honestly LEGEND level. Nicely done sir. Appreciate your tenacity and hard work on this. The results are brilliant.
Guess I am gonna watch this video again and again when I learning blender and one day I may know hows the process works, anyway this is inspiring stuff.
A while back I tried to create a black and white pencil scribble look with freestyle lines and the compositer, it worked quite well but the scene had to be done in a specific way, especially the lighting. I get so many new ideas how I could improve on this idea by seeing this
I've been in artist in all kinds of digital software my whole life, but for some reason nodes never appealed to me, so I am just amazed by this! Wow, truly.
This is genius!! I love that you show the frustration you experienced and showed your research and colaboration. So many assume that people who do amazing things just know how to do them and don't consider the work that goes into it. You wanted an effect and you didn't stop until you figured it out. Your perseverance is incredible!
The advanced shader's oil paint look at the end of the video is amazing and how the brush-strokes' direction emulates the way an oil painting would get painted in real-life is epic. Well done!
this basically was a fantasy for me growing up, the idea of "wat if I can make a movie by painting each frame to perfection so it blends in to the next frame" but realised 3d mixed with some filter was probably the way to go, but never imagined that it would become a reality some day
Outstanding! As someone who’s still at the frustrated stage doing even quite basic things in Blender, I have huge respect for your skills *and* perseverance 👍👍👍
I was expecting to see yet another kuwahara filter video when I clicked with a hope of very basic addition to it in post... I was so wrong, such an incredible node tree and concept! love it so much!

Wow, that is simply incredible. Thank you so much for breaking all this down. I've been tinkering with painterly effects for so long but never have I come even close to this level. That Occlusion trick for the outlines is so useful!
As an artist and a lover of all things art, i am so fucking blown away by this, it woulf have never occurred to me that blender is capable of this!! I am going to try this some day
I highly recommend you to collaborate with some game developer to incorporate this into their shader functionalities in the game engine. I've been looking for something like this very long and I truely believe this could be (if viable at reasonable frame rates) the key to a massively successfull indie game project.
You are a Genius!! i cannot comprehend any of the technical aspects that you explain in the video, but to me it looks like you made magic, something that to me seems impossible. I appreciate the effort and talent that you put into this shader, i'll give it a try!!! Thanks so much!
Gotta appreciate the absolute mountain of work it takes figuring this type of stuff out. I've spent years of time into tinkering in 3D software over the years, and still this is some of the most impressive and inspiring work I've seen. Now best let that hair you ripped out grow back for a bit
I've found this super interesting as someone with 3d blender skills (mostly for animating, but recently made my first toonshader based on the "lightning boy studio" toonshader) but a way stronger preference for the 2d animated look, I've been looking more towards greace pencil for that, but this makes 3d mesh really exciting again!
Imma be honest, I watch blender videos just to laugh at them. But this was something else. Fun fact, the premise of using 3d data to give birth to screen space particles is the somewhat standard approach to this. This was first pioneered by the technical team behind What Dreams May Come in 1998. Really good job. Subscribed.
This is so awesome and complex, You literally make nodes to work like dozen of painters making polish movie "Twój Vincent". And in realtime! That's sick ;)
Making a game and I'm thinking of ways on how to use shaders to create a game with a children book's illustration look and in 3d and this tutorial is pretty useful. I'm not a modeller, or artist for that matter im really bad at art, I'm a coder so I'm thinking I'll have to try and make my own render engine to capture the look im going for but this is a good beginning point for someone who barely knows how modelling things work. Thank you 👍

this is outstanding man. i'm looking into doing a painterly look using cycles and an external compositor, and the stroke flow technique you're doing is like nothing I've ever seen. All of it looks incredible.
I wish I could remember who's video it was but I saw one where they where achiving this by baking normal maps and then painting over them with a painterly smuge brush or something and applying some noise with a bit of wiggle for the live effect. Seemed to work really well. Not sure if this method is "easier" than yours but they are both really cool. Thanks for the vid!
wow... i commend your determination, im looking into creating a new art style thats simple enought to use for 3d animations, on an amateurs artists laptop. this video has really shown me i have alot of experimentation to do and stress to deal with lol. well done! and thanks for sharing vid
how does this work though if you dont want your characters or certain objects to not have the painterly effect? If it acts like a plane filter in front of the camera? Say for example I only want the BG to be stroked
You would need to render out the passes separately and then combine them. The advanced version I have on gumroad has the option to silhouette around the objects if there is nothing behind them which makes for good render passes.
@@Tradigital thanks for the response, Ill have to look into doing separate render passes! ill come back to the gumroad, wondering if there is a way to get an editiorial, see if it works with my workflow and then upgrade to the commercial license?
