We often like to pretend that this isn’t a reality of the sport. That our overwhelming experience and skill has the ability to diminish the inherent risk involved with these challenges.
But the reality is that this can happen to any of us at anytime, and the stakes are higher when the severity of the challenge increases, along with degrees of freedom and the room for human error expands.
Ultimately, this scenario demonstrates the value of having a team of individuals who can remain calm and collected, and why everyone who trains Parkour needs some foundational level of first aid.
I’m glad you came away relatively unscathed Dom, and I hope the shoulder is healing well.

I was so confident, overly confident, and when you start to lose respect for the risk, that's when things can get bad. I did a big front, after getting completely soaked, even though I didn't feel comfortable doing it wet I thought 'I've done hundreds of these, what's the worst that can happen?' Destroyed my knee and took over a year to recover.

I had an accident in 2021 that broke every rib on my right hand side, with ribs 2 - 9 being a flail segment which also resulted in a pneumothorax and a retro peritoneal haemorrhage (punctured lung and torn aorta). I never recovered fully so seeing you doing 10m diving fronts to sand just a few months after yours is EXTREMELY inspirational.

Hahaha, well, I do watch Schlappen... Bro, I'm shook by that video. Firstly, your buddies handled the situation PERFECTLY... I also have footage of my accident, I also blanked out and I was lucky that the first on the scene were first-aid trained and made me stay still and wait for help. Secondly, the mental rut and state of reflection you were in afterwards was very probably a sneaky symptom of PTSD. I've needed 3 rounds of trauma focused therapy because of PTSD - I had no idea the ways in which it was eating away at me... I would say be mindful of the head spaces you find yourself in for at least the next 18 months, especially as you were unconscious and have memory loss - it's a weird thing to get your head around but just because you can't recall it doesn't mean your brain wasn't completely consciously trying to get you through every minute of that traumatic episode, and part of the mechanism is your brain represses the experience into your subconscious where it can't hurt you. The low/post accident blues you felt may well find buoyancy in the mind-stream again,
just be gentle with yourself if this does happen. What kills me most is I began to withdraw, I stopped doing the things I loved and stopped nurturing connections I had with people, this includes my family, my Partner who eventually left me, my friends and even my own children. The last round of therapy I had really enabled me to unpick all of this, but it's an ongoing journey. But then, no one ever said "just get back out there and do something that terrifies you!" to me, and maybe that would've helped - Your 10m diving front flip to sand (absolutely insane!) might actually be all the medicine you need. 🙏

If you only showed yourself doing flawless superhuman feats, then kids coming up might not have the proper respect for the danger involved. You always have to be careful of head trauma. So many people see parkour and think it’s just recklessly tossing your body around, and that practitioners don’t understand the risks. The way you were able to take a very scary slam (that prob would’ve stopped any normal person from going back) and then work through the mental barriers and come back stronger with your biggest flip yet really shows the strength and fortitude required to consistently perform at such a high level.

I have wondered why I do parkour also, definitely been wrapped up in expectations as well, and it has also led to injuries, so relatable. Definitely on a different vibe now, only moving for fun!

Dom mate, you are to us what Daniel Ilabaca is to you. And that is to say just a wonderful representation of the fun, friendships, overcoming adversity, building others up, and just legend of the parkour community. As you know Daniel never strived for the status he gained but it was made because he was just a real person and the community recognised that, much the same as we recognise it in you. Hope you stay moving forever man

At 67 years young, I look back at the stunts my friends and I pulled and we had a bit of Dom in us. But we were not even close to what this man has achieved.
Dom is the world’s greatest athlete. The dear Lord above took this phenomenal athlete’s mishap and used this situation to not only refocus Dom’s joy in his talent, but to also use his inspiring role model traits to mentor the young athletes.God will continue to reveal to Dom just how special he is.

First of all, big up to all your support and people looking after you on that hit. That must have been hard for everyone. Glad you recovered so fast! Second, when you were talking about endlessly pushing the limit and how it affects your body especially as you get older, well, that reminds me of body building.
Sure its not the same, no crazy juice and diets that mess with you, but the end result is the same. For years and years you push your body to the limit and at some point when you feel at your "peak", it will give completely. In your case, if you dont crush your skull you might break something that will permanently disable you or put you in a wheel chair Ronnie Coleman style.
That said, every athlete knows this, every body builder knows this. The high of the peak might be worth the low for the rest of your life. I think at this point you have set up your happiness to align with doing these wild performances and you might think that without it life wont be the same. Like a super hero losing their powers, could they enjoy living a normal life again after all they have done?
I hope you figure it out. I think with this last segment you made it clear you choose to go out with a bang some day, i respect that too.

Youre ability to bounce back from injury had always inspired me. I used to do very simple and low level parkour a few years ago and i recently started getting back into it; i think its about time i kick it up a notch and steadily push myself to accomplish greater things.
The seizure was hard to watch and the vast majority of people would quit after experiencing something like that, however you are an exception to the masses. Keep at it Dom!

Good on the lads for knowing how to properly respond to what happened and doing it so quickly and calmly, refusing to move you or let you stand up was the best thing possible. I remember a few years back seeing people carrying and moving someone who ended up having a broken pelvis after a slam and being kind of apalled at that level of carelessness that could have resulted in something catastrophic so seeing an actual calm and correct response to a serious injury is great to see.

I know this might sound stupid, but what if you wear a helmet for that jump. I know it would look stupid, but skaters and bmxers wear them. And if the risk is literally a 4m fall on the head to concrete, it might be something to think about. At least for doing prep attempts, and when you feel you got it, take it off for the money shot.
You got extremely lucky with this one, we just want to see you stay healthy and performing for as long as possible. Take care Dom!

It's great that you showed the moments (and minutes) after your fall. Too many times people see the spectacular jumps, and sometimes a few falls and mistakes, but never the consequences. We need to be aware that this IS dangerous, and what better way than listening to someone else painfully snoring on the hot tarmac. It sounds scary enough to be a reminder we're all just a pile of bones and meat and (not too much) brain :D
    Glad you're fine now :)
