    ❗⛔❗⛔❗⛔❗⛔❗⛔❗⛔❗⛔NOTE: I was a noob making this video, as you can hear on my voice haha. DO NOT use "whatever works for you" as silicone, ALWAYS use Aquarium silicone, otherwise, you risk killing the colony. ALSO, aquarium silicone does not adhease to acryllic, so you need to use a primer on it first. Watch my later videos for more info on that...

      Top tip. Use some dish soap and water, dip your finger in this them smooth the silicone. The soap stops it sticking to your fingers

      Another great way to do this is to drill smallish holes in the Ytong and in the same spot on the acrylic and carefully screw it in place. that way you can take the nest appart if you have to deep clean it if, for example, mold was starting to grow in there because the ants might have used an area as toilet area or used a chamber to store food where you didnt anticipate it.

    And you just four the water inside of those wholes to moist the nest right? How do you know how much water you need?

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 років тому +2

      The water will be sucked up immediately by the Ytong, and as you saw I placed the hole on a "circle" so that they can enjoy the most of the moisture. And how much you will need? Well that depends. You want to add water untill some areas of the nest becomes darker ( they absorb water) and then see how the ants behave, if they place themselves really close to it, add more, and more frequently. If they stay away from the moist side, add less. Thats also why I added holes on opposite sides, so that if they dont like moisture that much I can only add on one side. If they like it I can add on both. Hope this helped and that you build one for your ants! :D
      PS: I watch and love ur vids! So excited you watch mine XD

      @@AntsScandinavia It is also smart to water one hole at a time becouse that prevents mold growth, the conditions are not stabile enough for mold to grow. Ants on the other hand, have no problems just moving themselves closer or away from the moist areas.
      If you water both holes every time then it is the perfekt conditions for the ants as there is no wind eighter.

      Super thanks man! Well, I live insweden. And here, I get it from a place called "XL bygg". That probably did not help you at all XD. Well go to you local store who sells wood and timber, and ask for either Ytong or light concreete. Its the same. Hope you find it, just ask around where you live where they bought the material they used to build their houses with, cause Ytong is actually used for inside walls. (if you live in a city in an apartment, well that people havent built their homes them selves but, hey, just ask around, someone must know ;)

      The ytong is kind of like a sponge and it soaks up the water then disperses it throughout the block and slowly seeps into the chambers. You just have to put some water in the hole and it will slowly seep in.

    • @AntsScandinavia

      well, ask them there about the plexi glass. Also, if they dont have "Ytong" they might just call it "light concreete" instead, its the same, and besides, most people use Ytong because it is easy to carv in and holds moisture well, so if you find some material that is easy to carv in and holds moisture well (and is non toxic ofcource) go for that! !Google translate! this. Ytong goes by many names, such as Ytong, Hebel, but the true name is A.A.C., which means Autoclaved Aerated Concrete. AAC is like a really soft version of some concrete or something, and is used in construction, and less commonly and nests.
      Wikipedia Article:
      Autoclaved aerated concrete is a lightweight, precast, foam concrete building material suitable for producing concrete masonry unit like blocks. Composed of quartz sand, calcined gypsum, lime, cement, water and aluminum powder, AAC products are cured under heat and pressure in an autoclave. Wikipedia

      @AntsScandinavia  6 років тому

      Hahaha, well, I actually understand that you think so 😂 I was also BLOWN AWAY by the amount of views my first ever video got. However, the topic was well chosen, sinse there where not that many Ytong ant nest videoes out. Short said, I dont blame you for thinking that ;) (btw, tutorials ALWAYS bring the most views, just watch my plaster nest tutorial 😉 )
