      Actually, as a professional driver, you lower the legs until they are just above the ground to just kissing the ground, unhook the lines, then pull the fifth wheel release, then drop the tractor suspension (if equipped with the switch), before slowly pulling out from under the trailer. ideally, you never need to put the legs in low gear. and dropping the trailer, 1/2 to 1 inch below fifth wheel ride height ensures you take the weight off the legs next time it gets hooked up.
      Looks like your truck has a "super 10" (5 forward gears, each get split with a thumb switch).
      Generally speaking, just setting the tractor brakes should be enough to hold the truck.
      Another reason to ensure that the trailer is slightly below the fifth wheel when dropped, when you hook up, if the trailer plate isn't making good contact to the fifth wheel, the locking jaw has been known to close below the pin, and trailers fall off the truck.... Always tug test after hooking to a trailer.

      @@bigtrucker26 I know here they are real sticklers for unhitching and rehitching in the right order even with car and trailer test to the point if you get it the wrong way they fail you a bit like if you hit a cone, miss the half metre box, hit "the walls at the back of the box or go out of the marked areas when doing the blindside reverse.

    If your trailer is empty you only need to lower the landing gear until it makes contact with the ground if you drop loaded then you go till the landing gear makes contact with the ground an give it some extra cranks an dump the suspension on the tractor before pulling out and go slow. When coupling there should be no gap between the 5th wheel an the trailer an when the trailer is connected always do a tug test put the truck in low an let the clutch out slightly so it tugs the trailer a lil bit to make sure your king pin it locked in. It works easier to if you just buy the 5 gallon pale of grease for your 5th wheel

    • @fordguy1986
      @fordguy1986 5 років тому

      Done properly the legs should be cranked down leaving an inch or 2, then coupler unlocked suspension dropped(assuming air suspension) and pulled away. When coupling the tractor should pick the legs off the ground. This allows for variances in fifth wheel height if a different tractor were to hook up to the trailer.

    A sweater would be awesome! Lol
    I keep seeing tidbits to help with the truck lol. If you pull the canister off your grease gun and use the spring in it to get grease onto the wheel it will go faster. Also, all those grooves on the fifth wheel are supposed to be full of grease. It'll feel like you're wasting it when you put the amount you need but trust me, you're not.
    Love seeing these videos and can't wait for the release of the 200k vid!

    Ryan, you’ll find it easier to pull your king pin lock if you only wind your landing gear down till it takes the weight of the trailer. Lifting it till you have a gap between the 5th wheel will put a crap ton of friction on the under side of the jaws and making it a pain to pull. Then if the ground under big red gets a little soggy when you go to hook up again, you’ll be banging into the head of the pin instead of the body. Have a nice Xmas.

    • @brandoncaldwell95
      @brandoncaldwell95 5 років тому

      Why you push the trailer brakes and roll back a bit. Takes preassure off the jaws. When actually dropping a trailer, there should be a 1/4inch gap from the gear to the ground so the 5th wheel plate puts proper preassure against the trailer. If not, can jump the plate or the jaws wont latch shut.
