For a few mins there I thought this was the movie " DUEL" remake with Dennis Weaver and Steven Spielbergs directorial debut. Nice to see this was a family project with your dads experience. Enjoy these times with your family and your dad. I miss my dad so very much after all the years we farmed together. Farm safe!!
Buff the red paint and it will really look good this summer, practice turning and backing and you will be a real trucker, Rocket can ride shotgun that will be cool.
Ryan, you are terrific and your videos are great. It is wonderful having you "talk more directly to me" (i.e., looking at the camera). Everything about your videos is welcomed and beneficial to many. May you continue making and sharing your videos as long as you wish...because thousands of us will eagerly watch...
with all the great work done on the truck, it is pretty much a new truck. You may as well paint it as well. At least you now know the truck like the back of your hand.
Yes sir u come a long way since u got the truck and never stop learning about ur truck bc u will see ppl don't care for big trucks on the road and u always have to be aware of other ppl when u trucking
G'day from Australia. Have enjoyed watching you fix the old girl up. Great work, you are miles ahead of some of the operators over here as far as maintenance is concerned. Keep up the great work guys.
You did a good job of repairing the smaller issues you guys found. Little bit at a time. Keep an eye on that coolant leak at the radiator. Take your time when you haul your first loads hole different animal with a load give your self a lot of room when slowing down or stopping. And watch out for the SOB'S that will pull out in front of you. People don't like to get behind a truck. Trucks don't stop on a dime. Safe travels Ryan.
Good video Ryan just keep practicing and then put a half a load in a trailer and practice with that practice slowing down sooner cuz it'll take you longer to stop when you're loaded handle handle totally different just do it a little time get used to it glad you got it fixed and ready to be roadworthy ready to haul some 🌽 be safe
Great to see Big Red on the hard road. I have a suggestion , on the trailer dumps, would it work if you used a small cordless impact to open and close them. It would be faster and easier if it would work , and cheaper than automatic dumps for now.
Then rain is a great way to rinse the trailer. When it gets warmer power wash the truck with good soap, and put a liquid wax for the truck body, and maybe CORN oil for the tires, so it is biodegradeable and safe for farm. Or real tire shine done in the shop wiped off once so it doesn't drip. There is water based and oil based shine which has uv protectant for the rubber. Foam the truck with wash and wax and you will get a little shine, then you can say the ride is pimped. :) Love the song. Don't know if you have it in the shop but a step stairs with two rail to clean the windows of Truck tractor and farm tractors. Best to put the work in now feel safe and not have dot give you a ticket and still have to fix it. Keep on trucking! You have a Long way to go, and a Short time to get there!
Check the clamps on the radiator and heater hoses they loosen up in cold weather. The tractor protection valve keeps you from loosing all your air from air leaks
Great job Ryan u and Dad should be proud of your work on truck and trailer a lot of work and learned stuff watching ur repairs big difference now to when u bought it. Enjoy ur videos.
Wait till you have a full load in that trailer. That's when "okay" becomes a white-knuckled, "OH S**T!" I was a truck driver and still used my GI Bill and still went to truck driving school. Probably saved my life doing it. I also became the company rodeo champ for Matlack, Inc in NJ. Just take it easy in your turns with a load on until you get the "feel of it" down. Keep up the good work.
You don’t need more practice load her up... it will shift different when loaded anyway... just give yourself plenty of time to slow down and plot your route look for tight turns etc... you will be fine👍🏻
Hello Ryan never heard to many bad things about them but that is my opinion looking great and glad you found the crack in the valve very important looking forward to see you haul some loads take care and see you next time
Be mindful of the position of the truck and try to keep it centered in the lane. I noticed in the video a lot of the time you were on the very right side of the lane. That puts 1/2 your tires on the reflective striping painted on the road which has HIGHLY reduced traction for your tires. Stay safe and good luck this spring!
Ryan, please make sure when you get that thing loaded you keep your distance far back from other vehicles. Keep the speed low on corners, you will feel the weight trying to push you.
Good job it was a lot of work but you got room for 1 more suggestion? Since it might be sitting idle at times consider putting on a battery disconnect switch. The batteries will stay charge that way-I know on my grain farm truck it worked
Yep bobtail shifts different than an empty trailer and that shifts different than loaded. Flatbed shifts different than a box trailer. Takes a while to get used to the changes. The loads will also change the braking a LOT. Easy way to learn would be to put a few ton of corn in it and drive, then add some more and work your way up to a full load.
This has been months in the making and will hopefully last you a long time. It was a project that taught you a lot, and it actually cost you *less* than my pickup was a few years ago. Great addition to the "fleet" of Kuster Farms equipment! Thanks for going over things for those of us who are rather "semi"-illiterate. Thanks for the video.
There are other valves in the brake system that can get sticky also, the treadle valve plunger can get that way, especially in farm trucks. And the valves that the brake chamber air lines connect too. Oil and water in the air system from a dirty air dryer and a wet tank that isn't drained can cause havoc
I am very proud of you sod busters, you and your pa did a good job .and you name on the doors look great. You will be talk of the town now .hope you have a great 2019 harvest. Sam
The tractor protection valve is an electronically controlled valve. That in case the trailer will lose all air it will cut off any air going to the trailer so the truck can have air to stop instead of locking the truck brakes too
Ryan have you guys ever considered turning half the machine shed into a heated shop? And our Columbia won’t turn the turn signal off either and it’s one of my biggest pet peeves. Thanks for another great video!
When you start hauling , just take your time. Don't be afraid of G.O.A.L. I have seen that on a lot of mirrors. get out and look . I think you have done well with the truck and I hope you do good when you get going.
You said once that the trailer undercarriage hoppers might be lower than other trailers, do you have any fields where the trailer cannot go due to low clearance? Great job on fixing up Big Red!
Watch out for the aluminum ends on the cord for your seven pin connectors. I put the same thing on a few years ago and I have replaced both ends on the cord because the aluminum ends where falling apart. I replaced them with plastic ones from John Deere.
That’s a great price you paid for the combo down here in Florida they are a lot more I’m a truck driver trying to get my own and it’s taking me some time to save up but I’ll get there
Suggestion Take a part load go around the concession see what happens will let u get more accustomed to the truck and trailer combo Think you have a basic understanding but need to enhance your knowledge by driving Part loads helps do that rather than throwing u into a full load situation Much different stopping and getty up go lmao I trained quite a few drivers over my driving Always did the empty /part load well before letting anyone loose with a fully loaded unit and never had anyone who had a problem including my employer Have a great experience as a cdl All the best
Granted that it was just one trip, but he did drive a partial load (around 300 bushels) to the co-op's secondary location late last fall. I agree though. Practice makes perfect.
im not sure about truck being for farm use, does he need IFTA sticker and a medical card,oh yeh and his own USDOT number,i don't know,if he does and gets in a DOT check without, I been in a couple DOT checks, was not a good time, but good advise about slowly working on getting up to 80,000 gvw
@@michaelheinen8526 Not sure either think cdl medical is mandatory but could be wrong probably not an ifta if not crossing the border but have no idea about USDOT # My suggestions were to let him gain some experience before fully loading the unit and heading down the road
I would really work on your down shifting. With your hills that skill will save your life. You shouldn't have to really touch the brakes to stop at a stop sign until your last couple gear changes. Get familiar with skip shifting down. 8th high, to 8th to 6th high to 5th high to 5th to 3rd is a very common skip pattern down. Run drills. Do it going down hill. Get very familiar with the location of your jake brake and you must be able to engage it without looking extremely fast. Again, it will save your life. Your wagon is only wee and 80000lbs isn't a lot of weight but your hills offer some challenges even at that low gross weight. Good luck.
I never skip gears, except for on the high range side with the direct or overdrive gears. I'm always in the gear I need to be in case something changes.
great job shifting progresivly just remember when you are loaded you have to think way ahead and slow down much sooner
Great to see Big Red on the road and at 100%. Be safe on the roads.

Great project, training and asset. Good luck on the skid steer find and dry fields.
Very nice door decals. Congratulations on finishing the project, and best of luck with Big Red. Be safe and enjoy
The famous Scare and Dare ride!!
Nice! You guys have done an excellent job fixing her up. I hope Big Red serves you well for many years to come!
Like I said in the last video, Very proud of the work you undertook with the truck maintenance. Great that your Dad mentored you.
Hammer Down Ryan ! A loaded trailer, will be different too.

I drove past your farm yesterday because my moms from Potosi and she wanted to visited some old friends.
The side of that sleeper is just crying for a “How Farms Work” UA-cam ad.
Eastbound and down, loaded up and trucking. You’ll be trucking in no time now. Great job on Big Red

big red sounds really good to me. I think it’s a great addition to your farm. Good luck with it.

Pretty sweet, lots of work done, looks like a good unit, good addition

I look forward to seeing this in action.
Check the caging bolt hole on the brake chambers when you do a service, you can see if the spring is broken. They break even on fairly new ones.
Good looking rig. That workhorse will help a lot.
