Hi Padre Peregrino, what if we're sorry, confessed, having understanding sins are forgiven but others may remember the occasion of sin. How can one let go if reminded of it and how can we lessen purgatory for that sin? Forgiven yes, but we remain in purgatory until restitution is suffice.. Is this correct?
I didn't have a good general confession when I came back to the church a couple years ago. I find confession the hardest sacrament. I'm often misunderstood. Sometimes I walk away being forgiven for wrong sin. Last time a minute into the priest told me to go get therapy. That this is suppose to be a conversion experience. I had told him I struggle with repeated frustrated anger....i don't know how to sum things up. Not place blame and encapsulate the character of sin. Let alone I was barely catechized and I am literally only now learning what sin is. I would go much more if it didn't always end up so weird. Thank you father for your videos. Sometimes I feel like I'm sitting in a mountain of sin. Other times I can barely find it.
Thank you Father Nix. I'm hoping to make a general confession in the coming weeks after being away from the church for over 25 years. I've been reading Father Ripperger's book, "Deliverance prayers for the laity" which has a great section at the back on the 10 commandments and explains all the sins in great detail. I was horrified to know I have committed many mortal sins I didn't realise I was doing. I might require more than 20 minutes with my confessor! Thank you for your tips. I will use them in my preparation for a general confession. May the Holy Trinity bless you abundantly.
Thank you for the book selection idea , I too went to confession last year for the first time in 45 years and could only think of big sins and have found out many more things that are sins
Mary McKinney and La Chele: The back of the book, page 101, has an appendix with a list of Sins, Vices or Spirits which was uncomfortable reading! However, the real gem is appendix II starting on page 112. It goes through each commandment in turn and lists all the sins attached to it. Then follows information on the precepts of the church. All of it is a real eye opener and made me understand what a wretched sinner I am. I wish catholic schools and parish priests would touch on all this information or at least point us in the direction of books that might help us. Hope you find the book as useful as I have. God bless you.
This very thing has been on my mind so much lately. I contacted the pastor of a traditional Catholic Church and he sent me an examination of conscience. It’s all tight there in the catechism. Thank you, Padre.
Great video and for me so timely! In another podcast, you mentioned a pamphlet available from HLI. I managed to get a copy from HLI Ireland in Knock. We are coming out of lockdown tomorrow so now I can organize a general Confession. The detailed pamphlet will help me immensely. Many thanks for your help ☺️
A general confession is also 'spiritually renewing' for St. Louis de Montfort Consecration and Divine Mercy Sunday. And yes the priest matters, some do not understand the concept of what a general confession.
Start by first praying to the Holy Ghost asking for His counsel, clarity, and guidance. Love you Father Nix for getting our attention. Father Robideau mentioned to our St. Gregory the Great Parish in Lansing, MI that only 1% of us get to Heaven. Praying for you and for all good and holy Priests. God is merciful - people like to forget He's also JUST!
Thank you so much Father. I have always struggled with confession and going regularly. I made a so called general confession a year ago with a good priest but I realize now it really wasn’t general as I did not list previously confessed mortal sins. I also was so nervous I didn’t really confess everything. I confessed mostly the things that really troubled me. I will need to do this again and do it right. Can you give examples of venial sins one might confess? I feel like I’d be there all day taking the priests time.😣
I am a recent convert to the Catholic Church (2020) I got received fully in the church; baptized, confirmed, communion. Should I still make a general confession?
If you were baptized before conversion and conditionally baptized in Catholic church, then you need it. If you've never been baptized before then not necessary. That's my knowledge.
My first confession was a mockery of the sacrament. The liberal priest's attitude was, "Close enough for government work, I've got somewhere else to be". He told someone else that he's only heard three real mortal sins since he started his priesthood several decades ago. He would actually get upset with those in his flock who went to confession every couple of weeks because they were too scrupulous. Needless to say, I would not go to this priest again unless I was on my deathbed.
One more question Father..does one have to confess thoughts? Like uncharitable but unwanted thoughts? Forgive my ignorance but I always struggle with that...whether I need to confess that. Thank you!! (Sometimes I think it’s coming from the devil).
Thank you. I was told off immediately entering the confessional once for having a list of sins.... (ordinary confession). Is it ok to use a list? I understand that for general confession it might well be different. Thanks
The formal methods of confessions started around 1100AD. Sin can be divided by reason of: gravity: mortal and venial; state of the conscience: formal and material; act or state: actual and habitual; person offended: sins against God, against neighbor, against self; manner: commission, omission; manifestation: internal, external; author: original and non-original (personal, actual); attention: deliberate, half-deliberate; cause: ignorance, fragility, malice; special disorder: sins against the Holy Ghost and sins that cry to Heaven for vengeance;[33] proper or improper;[34] psychological fertility: capital sins Its more complex to older married having feeling for each other, but unable to oblige one another. I like the form of confession directly to Jesus. I am very sorry for offending You. Amen!
The reason confession to Jesus "directly" doesn't work is because Jesus established confession to a priest in John 20:18-20. So, it would be ironic to disobey Jesus so as to think that's the pathway of forgiveness by Him.
I did a general confession just after Easter, but had no idea of numbers and just asked for forgiveness for each and every time I committed a sin. Am I right in thinking this isn't a valid general confession then and I'll only be forgiven for one instance of each sin? I'm in Ireland and trying to find any priest that isn't steeped in modernism is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack 😥.
Please can you answer my question. l came into the Catholic church aged 65. I made a confession and then was baptisted and confirmed. I don't have to hock up my prior life do l? I was led to believe that l was relatively granted a fresh start. So would l have do "that first confession again '"
i did a general confession with my priest before but instead of naming sin he just had me say i was sorry for any sins or anything that i have done that offended God up to this point in my life might have done that due to my brain condition tho
Great video Father! I made my first general confession in January and it was the best decision I ever made in my spiritual life. It gave me so much peace. I said "hundreds" and "thousands" for many of my sins as well. In your opinion should you confess venial sins in your general confession or just mortal sins? Also, how often do you think a lay person should make one? I know that Father Ripperger recommends once every five years for lay people.
Thanks be to God. You only have to number the mortal sins (even if by approximation.) It's good to name venial in a confession (general or otherwise) but it's not necessary to a valid confession.
You gotta try to remember. That's why a pen and paper is best with a good exam before confession. If you truly forget during that time, you're forgiven at absolution.
I forgot to mention the most important part: BE REALLY SORRY FOR YOUR SINS!!!
Hi Padre Peregrino, what if we're sorry, confessed, having understanding sins are forgiven but others may remember the occasion of sin. I'm not sure what a traditional perspective is, but there is Divine Mercy Sunday.
This was like a lifeline thrown to a sinking man. Thank you father.

Your video motivates me to get moving! Thank you Father Nick!
Great advice Father. Every seminarian should watch this and make a general confession before entering.
I love the dozens hundreds and thousands. So very helpful. Love you
Excellent video. Thanks again. father!👍🙏🏻

You are not alone. I obviously need to purchase that book you mention.

You’re doing amazing Father, thank you 🙏🏼

Thank you Lord Jesus for Fr Dave Nix. So blessed to have “Mighty Shepherds” teaching Faith, Hope and Charity to the flock, firmly 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you, Father, I went to Confession and made the general confession as you outlined.

Thank you so much Father Nix! God bless you always ❤️🙏✝️✝️✝️
Thank you, Father Nix
Thanks Padre. I like the short videos for some sp light for the day. God bless
I usually can take more away from the short videos. Like carrying two or three boxes instead of attempting to carry a dozen!

Hello, what HLI stands for?

Father, This was so helpful for me -thank you so so much!
Thank you.
Thank you Father
Thank you, Father David! Great explanation of very helpful information. Continued prayers for you and all of our clergy! God bless!

Thank you Fr. Nix. We have a lot in common being that we both grew up in DEN, and of course our faith. God Bless
Thank you May God Bless You And The Work Of Your Hands
WOW, THANKS FATHER !
I've read we should make a general confession whenever we have a major life change, such as getting married.
Life time confession ooooooooh my word . It will take days to write it out.
Thank you so much Father. I have always struggled with confession and going regularly. Another resonó is that with maturity you can see more. What before it was blindvto the eyes can be something that was wrong.

If you were baptized before conversion and conditionally baptized in Catholic church, then you need it. If you've never been baptized before then not necessary. That's my knowledge.
Your baptism washed away every sin you've accumulated up to the moment of baptism. Now you need to confess all sins from baptism to today.

Dear Father, would Plenary Indulgence help . I confessed my sins and did Plenary Indulgence and realized I forgot a sin. Would I be forgiven?
One more question Father..does one have to confess thoughts? Like uncharitable but unwanted thoughts? Forgive my ignorance but I always struggle with that...whether I need to confess that. Thank you!!
(Sometimes I think it’s coming from the devil).
I converted 27 yrs ago and I don’t remember if I had to confess all sins prior to my conversion. Do I need to include those?
Thank you. I was told off immediately entering the confessional once for having a list of sins.... (ordinary confession). Is it ok to use a list? I understand that for general confession it might well be different. Thanks
How do you know if your priest is liberal or conservative? Or how do you find a conservative priest?

How often can one do general confession for a normal person? And is it advisable for scruplous people to do general confession ?

No, only confess the sins the moment after baptism
Would it be ok to say “too numerable to count”? That’s what i did in my general confession

Are you available via Skype? I sure love your approach to this Sacrament Fr Dave.
No tattoos said in the Old Testament.
Is medical marijuana a sin?
No
FR. HOW ABOUT BECAUSE WE CAN'T REMEMBER ALL THE SINS AND SAY FORGIVE ME FOR ALL OF MY PAST SINS MORTAL AND VINAL ..IS THIS NOT GOOD..
You gotta try to remember. That's why a pen and paper is best with a good exam before confession. If you truly forget during that time, you're forgiven at absolution.
