It's because the people are "native": THAT IS, as they were born in india, their bodies already are acclimated to the organisms that the bodies of visitors do not YET have.
Let me explain: I had to go to South America for work for a few months. I won't name the country but I'll say that is classified as "developing" but is not known for low hygiene standards. For the first weeks I was there I got sick a few times from eating local food. I had diarrhea and fevers. But after those bouts of illness i never got sick again for the thereafter months I spent in the country.
What happens is that my body had never encountered those microorganisms in that South American place so my body reacted by "attacking" those microorganisms that it had never encountered AND CREATED ANTIBODIES AGAINST THOSE "foreign" organisms. That's what the diarrhea and fevers were about. After being sick those times my body had created the antibodies to the "foreign" organisms and thus thereafter I could eat the local food and ingest those organisms but my body was familiar with them through the antibodies and I never got sick again.
That's what happens to people arriving in India.

I live in his home country (DE) for more than 18 years and there are more than enough places that are equally inhabitable (especially eastern part). I would rather try to clean my own house rather than poking into other's houses

This is a slum that's why it is dirty. There are many homelessness and slums in USA also like Skid Row in LA, Slums of Detroit and San Francisco. They are also very dirty.
