Nice to see this album covered on UA-cam. I acquired the original back in the 80's not knowing what it was. Maybe knowing Michael B. was on it? I guess. Still a treat to listen to even now.
The problem with Led Zeppelin isn't that they borrow from other artists. It's that they not only fail to credit the original artist, but give themselves credit instead. It's why they've been sued many times over and have had to change their album credits, either to avoid being sued or as a result thereof. Even when they use a traditional song, which is fair game to cover, they give themselves credit instead of saying it's a trad song. And Zep's apologists are in denial about the band's plagiarism. If it was once or twice, I could understand, but it's like: "Whole Lotta Love" heavily relies on "You Need Loving" by Small Faces "The Lemon Song" copies "Killing Floor" by Howlin' Wolf "Dazed and Confused" is an uncredited cover of "Dazed and Confused" by Jake Holmes "Bring It On Home" is an uncredited cover of "Bring It On Home" by Sonny Boy Williamson "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is an uncredited cover of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" by Joan Baez (among many others) "Black Mountain Side" is a blatant ripoff of "Black Water Side" by Bert Jansch "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp" was stolen from "Wagoner's Lad" by Bert Jansch "In My Time of Dying" is an uncredited version of "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed" by Blind Willie Johnson "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" should be called Hats Off To Bukka White, because it cops White's "Shake Em On Down". Zep actually copied the song again on "Custard Pie" "Boogie with Stew" is a shameless ripoff of "Ooh, My Head" by Ritchie Valens "I Can't Quit You Baby" is an uncredited cover of "I Can't Quit You Baby" by Otis Rush (willie Dixon wrote it) "How Many More Times" is a hybrid copy job, 1st part is "How Many More Years" by Howlin' Wolf and the 2nd part is "The Hunter" by Albert King "Nobody's Fault But Mine" is an uncredited version of "Nobody's Fault But Mine" by Blind Willie Johnson "Gallows Pole" is Zep's version of "Gallis Pole" by Lead Belly "White Summer" is an uncredited cover of "She Moved Through The Fair by Davey Graham "The Girl I Love Got Long Curly Hair" is an uncredited cover of "The Girl I Love Got Long Curly Hair" by Sleepy John Estes All would be forgiven if Zeppelin had given credit where it was due, but they didn't do that and their legacy has suffered as a result. The band features some of the best rock instrumentalists ever and a charismatic lead singer. And yet there'll always be detractors who point to their plagiarism.

Nothing new, Plant also bit some of Jimi Hendrix's lyrics on "If 6 Was 9"... "If the sun refused to shine (I don't mind- JH), If the mountains fell in the sea (let it be, it ain't me- JH)" You be the judge
So, There is a lot of bickering about Led Zep in the comments here. Zeppelin had used so many songs to spring board off of and it's true they don't seem to drop the part that inspired them from their song but that's actually really clever and honest of them. It's a way of writing a thank you letter to the group that inspired them. The song, by Spirit called, Taurus Led Zep took and Stairway to Heaven came out of it. Taking small elements and extrapolating an entire adventure out of it was their specialty. There haven't been many people in the music world who could take basic building blocks and create the way they could. Cheers.
Not to mention that everyone did that back in the day. People played each others songs and did variations to them all the time. This was especially true of blues and jazz because of the whole concept of blues or jazz standards (songs everyone played since the beginning of time). In fact, it's very possible these guys stole some of the ideas from someone they heard do something like it. In those days it was an honor when others covered your song and they weren't in court every other week suing each other about it.
@polasco77 It wouldn't be too surprising given Robert Plant was a huge fan of West Coast rock at the time he joined the New Yardbirds. He was a huge fan of bands like Love and Moby Grape.
in '76 I gave a speech regarding "borrowing/stealing" songs & Led Zep was cited several times. say what you will regarding Eric Clapton;however, Cream gave credit to skip James "I'm so glad" on fresh cream lp & the $1500. royalties paid his medical care the last year of his life. Happy after all the reviews, no dislikes!! Simple but yea...this version held so much of a carefree vibe and free of so much add ins. Raw!! I guess you could call it. Pleseant!
@jurgengaas1 They didn't "sample" it. True, the lyrics are mostly the same (as are many blues songs), and the tempo and rhythm are similar (like a thousand other blues songs), but the tune is different. The vocal melody, dynamics, and instrumentalism are quite different.
I agree Tim . Every band nicks a lick or two . No band did it to the extent that Lz did . Their plagiarisms are actually a fascinating part of rock history
I think Lyrer0 said it best, borrowing and sharing of lyrics is part of the history of blues. How many people wrote songs based off of Hoochie Coochie Man and Rollin' and Tumblin' for example? "Working from 11 to 7 (or 7 to 11) really makes life a drag" is the only thing that's the same between this and Since...
Zeppelin's song was obviously indebted to jamming on this song but they took it in a very different direction. Lots of famous songs get their start from other sources, it's all over rock n'roll and pop music. I guess it's a matter of perspective.
It says a lot about the guys in Moby Grape knowing what a colossal fucking over that they would have to endure for DECADES with regards to unpaid royalties and unfair business practices directed at them by their horrendously evil manager (Matthew Katz) and, how their lives have been a struggle to say the least (mental illnesses, homelessness, houses being destroyed by acts of god, several court cases, etc...). Yet, they very much could have easily sued the exceptionally wealthy Page/Plant for obvious plagiarism...and, easily win...but, they chose to be classy. Page/Plant should just give the $ to them. Not like it would hurt them one bit
Even though the lyrics are WAY obviously stolen (oh, I'm sorry... sampled and reversed)... I'm gonna let this one go. Even Jerry Miller (guitarist from Moby Grape, and a friend in Tacoma) said, "Hey. Like WE were never influenced ?" He's a good dude. No probs.
I agree that since ive been loving you is by far the superior version, but its just a bitter side test that they shamelessly and coldheartedly just lifted a few elements from here. It would be cool if they had written all themselves, you know.
I don´t think Since I've Been Loving You is a copy of this song, only share a few words. Many songs share a lot of words or have a common title and there's no copy, in that case all the songs were a copy. Think about it and be happy.
katkal3 that’s not enough detail. I get your point, but that’s like saying Fermat’s Last Theorem wouldn’t be proven without Fermat’s existence (that’s true).
Led Zeppelin were a group of great musicians but not creative songwriters. They took riffs lyrics and melodies from other artists. No credit given to the original artists. They did it so often that it's obvious that their songwriting skills were practically nill.
Yes you are correct, i believe i misunderstood you. Please accept my apologies. I have been reading the story of the band and it is a sad story, they sure were screwed by their former manager. Cheers
its was them did the screwing , ripping off everybodys songs and makin the money , they all got rich and only gave credit when taken to court en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Led_Zeppelin_songs_written_or_inspired_by_others

I,mglad people still give a shit ,these guys were so beautiful,I suppose people r still arguin, over Since I've been loving you tho,I frankly just like to sit back and dig em, I remember u could get that double album ,free at some places
I'm Zepp fan undeniably, but this track is true blues, something Zeppelin tried imitate.....they failed.... i always thought plant's version was pain, but this is true pain.... guitar is ridiculous and the voice is deperate.... true desperation, no imitation
Zep has indeed stolen much, and has been forced to make restitution to the real composers of some of "their" songs. In this case, the righteous thing would be to share the credit, but legally, they didn't have to: They didn't use a copyrightable-length of lyrics or melody, and the other aspects of the tune: chords, rhythms, guitar riffs, can't be legally protected. If the blues had a copyright, one guy'd be making all the money.
More than a few words actually. Laid back blues feeling. Zeppelin was definetly inspired by this. I get what you're saying though. I just think Zepp went a little too far at times. But, when you look at Marvin Gaye, his version of Yesterday, he changed the melody but kept the words. Had he changed the words he could have had another song and not worry about the royalities. But he decided to pay honest respect. Something needs to be said for that as well see link ua-cam.com/video/z03AGPYA58w/v-deo.html
There are many many more.....They only inspired Led Zeppelin they did not make them.... Robert and Jimmy to this day adore Jerry Miller of Moby Grape for his inspiration to Led Zeppelin... They visit and pay respect to a truly unseen, unknown brilliant inspiration of their music....jerrymillersmusic
Zeppelin took this song and turned it upside down. They completely reworked it and made it into a classic. Yes, Robert Plant stole some of the lyrics but otherwise it's pretty much original.
What in this composition, as an original, is better than 'the cover' by Zepp?- NOTHIN'.... The same goes for the black Mississippi, so called "blues masters". Zepp only took the structure and refined it to an extreme level of perfectibility.
Moby Pearl? Oh, sorry. :D ..There was such a crapload of stuff done throughout the 60s and 70s that next to no one ever heard, such as this. I prefer my rock a little harder, tho. But these guys had something goin on. Pretty good! The singer is sort of like Eric Burden, where if you hadn't seen a pic of the band, you would've thought they were Black. That's a compliment. I don't mean he sounds like E Burden.
the lyrics were lifted by robert plant no doubt but this this song was not unique at all. go listen to "love that burns" by fleetwood mac. released the same year as this and they are pretty damn similar. a rock song in the key of a or c minor in 4/4 time was not invented by moby grape. most rock guitar orientated music is based on the minor pentatonic scale. that means they are pretty much limited to five noted in each key. they are playing the same five notes over and over again. you play the same key (or relative key), in the same time signature, shit is bound to sound similar.
Accepting that "since I've been loving you" comes undoubtely from here, it must be said that zeppelin's attempt on this idea is by far much better than moby grape's. In fact, listening to this shows what an incredible band led zeppelin was.
Yeah, that's totally true. From my point of view it's very dirty to copy material from another band and pretend it's yours, but you know, zeppelin did it all the time!! haha They were somehow on the devil's side, and that's cool as well. They also had Bonham, Page, and Plant, and were the strongest band ever. What are you gonna do.
Reading these comments is hilarious. Zeppelin did not borrow inspiration from this song. They stole it. It's the same damn song. Don't get me wrong. I love Led Zeppelin but call a spade a spade. Come on now.
Fans will manipulate themselves saying things like they took their idea. But if you copy the structure, singing style etc then you are robbing the song.
Ya , I guess Moby Grape , the band that created the song just didn't try hard enough , cause Led Zeppelin's attempt was better , but besides that Ass Backwards view , giving a group who COPIED their song and many others MORE credit than the original Creators , is also some what Ass Backwards . Led did their interpretation and changed the song , but that doesn't make them geniuses . Plus you don't take into count they were in better position to com along and listen to everybody else and copy .
Sorry don't agree. This is Raw and has more feel for the genre of Blues. In reality Plant Worshipped Steve Marriot and attempted but miserably failed to copy and sound like his voice. Jimmy Page selected him because of some similarities of Marriot. To me Led Zepplin was a 1,000% over rated. They couldn't compare to whom came before them.
Bob Mosley was one of my huge vocal influences, and one of the best bass players of the day. Thank you, Bob!
The ONLY version to listen to. Many nights feeling loose and playing along to it.

Actually, Since I Been Lovin You did not come from here. It is an Otis Rush tune. I like both Moby's and Zeppelins versions but Otis is the man!
A whole what seven words?! Someone strip the Zeppelin of their credibility immediately!
@@hunterrobinson7682 oh please shut up
Even though the lyrics are WAY obviously stolen (oh, I'm sorry... sampled and reversed)... I'm gonna let this one go.
Even Jerry Miller (guitarist from Moby Grape, and a friend in Tacoma) said, "Hey. Like WE were never influenced ?"
He's a good dude. No probs.
Jammie ....
and everyone that has used the I, IV, V progression in a song...?
I agree that since ive been loving you is by far the superior version, but its just a bitter side test that they shamelessly and coldheartedly just lifted a few elements from here. It would be cool if they had written all themselves, you know.
I don´t think Since I've Been Loving You is a copy of this song, only share a few words. Many songs share a lot of words or have a common title and there's no copy, in that case all the songs were a copy. Think about it and be happy.
In some parts of the song, even vocal phrases are the same
i dont think since ive been loving you wouldve been written if this song didnt exist
katkal3 that’s not enough detail. I get your point, but that’s like saying Fermat’s Last Theorem wouldn’t be proven without Fermat’s existence (that’s true).
got this record for free today because it was a promo or something
+Timothy Lewis You made out! it is a great album. I found it yesterday and paid two bucks. Some great music in this album.
Cheers
Led Zeppelin were a group of great musicians but not creative songwriters. They took riffs lyrics and melodies from other artists. No credit given to the original artists. They did it so often that it's obvious that their songwriting skills were practically nill.
+Michaela And why do you say that? I am curious.
Yes you are correct, i believe i misunderstood you. Please accept my apologies.
I have been reading the story of the band and it is a sad story, they sure were screwed by their former manager.
Cheers
its was them did the screwing , ripping off everybodys songs and makin the money , they all got rich and only gave credit when taken to court

You're joking right? I have two words for you.. Rain Song.. try giving that a whirl .. its an underrated masterpiece.. All Of My Love genius.. The Ocean.. The Song Remains the Same… Over the Hills and Far Away… I could go on all day .. fuckin Get over yourself, like you are in any position to criticize Led Zeppelin for fuck sake.. I'll be the first to admit they nicked ideas here and there.. But to render their catalogue moot? or say they cant write LOL
Im so sure.. get back to me when you've written a "Going To California"… "Ramble On".. or "Whole Lotta Love" and then we'll talk..
They nicked ideas? Thats a huge understatement. Where they talened? Absolutely..Fantastic musicians. Yes. But writers of unique songs. No..
@polasco77 Listen to Miller's Blues live, and it shows how good this band could be live. Not saying they're Led Zeppelin, but they're no slouches......
The guitar playing is very Wes Montgomery
@babystinky Sibly isn't a cover.
Despite the similaritys involving lyrics it is far from a cover
I,mglad people still give a shit ,these guys were so beautiful,I suppose people r still arguin, over Since I've been loving you tho,I frankly just like to sit back and dig em, I remember u could get that double album ,free at some places
Zeppelin didn't "cover" this tune, they resurrected it from the dead the way Jesus did to Lazarus. Even better!!!
I feel pretty sad about the whole thing.
led zeppelin must have used this for Since I've Been Loving You
THATS WHAT I THOUGHT WHEN I FIRST HEAD THIS
+MichaelHansenFUN ding ding (what does he win johnny)
***** its on an old webpage
11-7 = 8 hours , 7-11 = 16 hours.
It pisses me off that zep took this one, makes me kinda sad, cuz zeps version is monumental. sad, sad.
but don't get me wrong, this song is great
I would be soo pissed off if someone stole this song from me, ohh wait.....
I'm Zepp fan undeniably, but this track is true blues, something Zeppelin tried imitate.....they failed.... i always thought plant's version was pain, but this is true pain.... guitar is ridiculous and the voice is deperate.... true desperation, no imitation
lol! :P
Actually it shows what an incredible plagiarists they were
A couple of words but a completely different song. It was inspiration not stealing.
Something needs to be said for that as well see link

"a couple of words"? that's a cop out. lawyers think like that.the intent is to deceive-not cool.
Burdon (With and O) :)
Jimmy page was a blues technician; he took the best of.. and he remastered it to the greatest is
Page was a blues rock guy who got really sloppy after awhile
There are many many more.....They only inspired Led Zeppelin they did not make them.... Robert and Jimmy to this day adore Jerry Miller of Moby Grape for his inspiration to Led Zeppelin... They visit and pay respect to a truly unseen, unknown brilliant inspiration of their music....jerrymillersmusic
Ask Robert.....lol
Zeppelin took this song and turned it upside down. They completely reworked it and made it into a classic. Yes, Robert Plant stole some of the lyrics but otherwise it's pretty much original.
Theft is SO cool !
hahahahahahaahahahaha
This would be a great song for Lady Gaga to redo with a piano instead of a guitar.
just my opinion. KISSES!!
In fact, listening to this shows what an incredible band led zeppelin was.
robert you could have at least tried a little harder with the lyrics come on ahhaha
And Jimmy with the guitar
Hey, some women can be very demanding.
led zeppelin just sampled this track..
406 views? tha fuck?
You're right, Led Zeppelin is an incredible band... I mean, cover band.
No its not. Just because a song is 12 bar blues in 3/4 time doesn’t make it the same.
By far "much better" than Moby Grape's? That's just your opinion...not fact.
Since I've been copying you...copying from seven to eleven every night...
Led Zeppelin is better than Moby Grape, but I think that Since I've Been Loving You should be its own song.
11-7? robert plant works longer (7-11)
"Plagiarism", instead of "Tribute", is what those ears untrained in blues hear in these cases. Go and learn how blues is done my friends.
This version is 10x better than Led Zeppelin's ripoff
Sorry don't agree. This is Raw and has more feel for the genre of Blues. In reality Plant Worshipped Steve Marriot and attempted but miserably failed to copy and sound like his voice. Jimmy Page selected him because of some similarities of Marriot. To me Led Zepplin was a 1,000% over rated. They couldn't compare to whom came before them.
Wow this is a blatant rip off that got away. oh well .
this song sucks compared to since ive been loving you.. the intro lyrics are the same just in a different order.. everything else is different
Boring.
The real question is why did Led Zep steal from such shitty bands.
What would you say is a good band
