There's a lot that goes into creating a character like that and maintaining that character, but a big one is knowledge. I know Barry reads the news religiously, but he also must keep up with cultures from around the world and with celebrities that are popular, whether he personally finds them interesting or not. No matter how old he gets, his memory, recall, lightning-fast responses/jokes, and constant learning never dull. We have a lot of screwball humor and excessive vulgarity these days and that's easy. Comedy like this is a craft.

In this episode Barton and Bolton ook mystified most of the time, while Weaver probably understands the joke but doen't find it particularly funny. But it is often the expressions on Dame Edna's guests faces that makes the gag even funnier.
