I've seen different techniques of how to change skin tones of a doll. Sometimes it would be airbrushed, layered with pastels and waste a can of MSC or dying the doll. This is a game changer and I thank you for that, it's a really cool!😄
What a great technique, I will have to do some research on those paints plus I seem to that a lot of Frankie's that may need a color, thanks so much for sharing 👍👍👍👍
Lady Cassandra says: "Moisturize me" XD i"m amazed with all those scientific researches made by doll artists to change skin colors. this is serious business.
So far it holds up pretty well on the dolls I’ve used it on, but the more posing there’s risk of chipping. That’s why I put the alcohol ink on the joints first because it sticks to the skin really well and if some of the paint flakes on the joints the plastic is less noticeable if you neutralize the color with the alcohol ink first.
This is really helpful! I want to paint a shadow high grey skin tone doll Ash Silverstone, to a more normal fleshed tone. I’m making a custom Alfie from rainbow high. He’s a character that never gotten a doll before. I had no clue how I was going to get the skin look without a air brush so this is so informative and do able! Thanks! 🩷
this is so satisfying to watch! How many dolls do you think you can do with just one of the colors? The price is very much out of my range, but it is definitely something to look into!
It will do a good number. I’m not sure the exact total because this pallet wasn’t brand new when I started using it on dolls. I’ve done three with this method so far and those three took very little paint.
I'm going to try this. I give up on acrylics for my doll repaints. It ALWAYS flakes and chips. Question: do you buff/sand the body first to remove the smooth surface?
I like this technique thanks for showing. I am just wondering if one can also make the body plain white with these colours, or does the underlying colour shine through then?
Thank you! With white you might need three layers instead of too. I haven’t tried to make a doll completely which myself but most white art mediums need extra coats with out a primer
Is the alcohol activated paint at the beginning for the joints the same as the skin tone palette paints you use for the whole body :o just want to check before I look into all different alcohol paints for joint blushing !!!! thank you
I'm about to use this method on the doll I'm making to look like my DnD character! How has this method been holding up since you made the video, any chipping or discoloring?
Hi! I’d love to help and have a few questions. What type of paint are you using? Is it one that is activated by 99% isopropyl alcohol? The paint I use has never been gummy. Also the type of doll you’re working on can effect things. I’ve only used this in monster high dolls.
This video is great and I plan to try this a.s a.p.! What brand/type of ink do you use for joints and can it be purchased online? I also wondered if its available in other tones. Thanks for these tips!
In this video I used Tim Holtz alcohol ink. It can be purchased on Amazon and comes in many colors. I also use DecorRom alcohol ink but haven’t tried it on joints yet. They are more cost friendly and come in huge sets of colors.
You can but it will take longer. I’ve never tried bigger brushes on dolls since I work on mainly one size of doll. I’m not sure if the brush strokes will be visible on bigger dolls. If you do get brush strokes you can go over them with a makeup sponge to get rid of them. For the bulk of the body I don’t use brushes and only use a makeup sponge.
This is a new Doll Customize Skin color I've just discovered! What kind of materials did you use for this video and where can I be able to achieve it, along with the technique?
I use alcohol activated paint by Skin Illustrator. It is activated by 99% isopropyl alcohol. It can be applied with makeup sponges and brushes. I got my supplies from Amazon. That’s where I order most of my stuff. 🙂
The price is a down side, but I like some of the ways it can be used to get certain looks. I switch it up from these to pastels depending on the amount of MSC I have. Thanks for watching!
I make sure that you use soft pastel with alcohol to mix to paint doll? I want to know before I will paint “Twilight” white pale Edward’s head in dark. Thanks.
I haven’t tried mixing soft pastels with alcohol before. You can use the alcohol activated paint as a base coat then seal it and go over it with soft pastel blushing
@@dolldoc7884 hi, I've used this method before with narritive alcohol activated paint, tho not real experienced with it. But the 99% isopropyl alcohol gums up and removes msc. Have you had this issue? Anyway around it?
@@heather1272 Sorry, I haven't come across that issue yet. Are you working with a makeup sponge, and how long are you letting your MSC dry? Also you might try making sure that your paint isn't too wet with alcohol because too much can strip the previous layers.
With acrylic paint and mod podge I mix them together and water them down. I then paint in thin coats. With mod podge you run the risk of it yellowing over time if exposed to too much sun. I also spray Mr Super Clear UV flat over the painted areas to help keep the mod podge from getting sticky over time. With any acrylic paint just keep it in watered down thin layers to avoid brush strokes.
@@dolldoc7884 Thank you, I know right! But the Ever After High dolls have the perfect rounded heads and small bodies. I was lucky enough to find one at a thrift store. Thanks for the support!
Hello, I want to change the color of some of my dolls to various brown shades to depict African American, Native American and Latino skin shades. What pallet would you recommend? thank you.
It's alcohol based paint, so alcohol is technically the thinner. You wouldn't want to use " paint thinner" etc, as each type of paint has it's own chemical firmula that would use it's own thinner...:)
I think i should invest money For projects like fun m as by I'll create A metalic Cyberpunck woman creat my ow WestSide story in A cyberpunck World Westside Story with dolls like this
I don’t like using the ink on the entire body. I only use it on the joints. When I tried it in large areas like her full leg it was too patchy. For me the ink work best in small areas.

I’m surprised more people didn’t know about this it looks soooo much easier than acrylic

This is great advice! I’ve found that miniature paints such as Citadel paints work great also. I sprayed matte clear coat on the body before painting.
I’d like to eventually try citadel paints too!
Thank you! I’ve been floundering on a doll and this method looks awesome! 💋💋💋

With pastel just for skin tone modification...😌😍♥🎨
It's so smoothy and more natural than with a dye chimic spray.☺☺

Awesome! Happy this was helpful!

I do buff the body to get rid of the gloss coat. Paint sticks to it a lot better that way.

It has held up really well for me, but I don't move my dolls much. With a lot of posing and movement there is always some risk for wear.

Would this work on a doll with tattoo like markings that I don’t want to cover?

does the joints chip and flake off the paint when moved? this has been the problem with all the skin repaints i try.
I find I run into less flaking with this method, but I don’t reposition my dolls a lot though.

Hello again, I am not from the UK what is mod podge really means because translate dos not show it to me ;-)
Mod podge is a crafting supply that has many different finishes. It can be used as a glue and/or sealant for certain projects.
Do you know how to DYE a light flesh colored doll light grey? I don't have much supplies, but I have acrilic outdoor paint and Mod Podg.

Does this smell? I live in an apartment and been wanting to do this. It reminds me of reborning dolls. lol
There is an alcohol smell so I recommend keeping a window open or fan on. The smell goes away pretty quickly once the paint dries.
