I can't stop laughing - and being a bit ashamed - that I put you through the darkness of The Parable of the Sower lol. It's been a good experiment; I've followed the book club since Hyperion and it has also helped me to understand my reading likes and dislikes. My favourite has been... (don't look at me that way) The Parable of the Sower!

It’s been awesome being part of the suggestion group and reading these too! Some great departures from my normal reading genres which has been cool, some struggle reads lol but it’s all fun!

Awesome video Johan! I'm sorry that you didn't like Fairy Tale. I was so looking forward to reading that novel! I will say that I was pretty excited to have the first book that I put forward drawn for the club! Even though there have been ups and downs with the reads, being able to discuss them with you and the community has been something I look forward to every month! Looking forward to the next zoom chat!

I think our tastes are exactly diametrically opposed! 😂❤ Maybe I can use your negative reviews as recommendations! 😂

All over the place indeed, but at least you got some great reads out of it! And you found out a little more about what will work for you and what won't.

This sounds like a very interesting exercise! I look forward to reading some of the books you have mentioned in the video.

Love your channel! I have a content recommendation (that I would love). I find it hard to stay in touch with new books publishing within the last 12 months or less (or just the current year). As most of booktube recommends books in general, not by publish year. A regular video (monthly or otherwise) that goes over book releases from the last month and which ones you would recommend would be AMAZING.

I would very much enjoy seeing Library of a Viking's take on that concept, but in the meantime I recommend checking out Daniel Greene's channel - his fantasy news comes out every week and he does cover reveals where he shows the covers for soon-to-be-released books and reads out the blurbs, in addition to lots of book, TV, movie, and video game news.
I do find that the literary fiction sections of BookTube cover new releases better, because many of them follow the awards lists that come out, but I haven't really encountered that in the sci-fi and fantasy sections of BookTube.

I don't think that I could do it as the host of such a book group, just out of fear that I would be pestered with tons of romantasy. This said, I am part of book groups where you can vote for the next read, but aren't really forced to do it. And while I don't read the books suggested every single time (just because I'm too slow of a reader these days), it has mostly been fun when I do. especially because my TBR pile has grown so big in recent years, that most of the books requested are already on it anyways, so it actually helps me decide for my next read.

It's so interesting to me that every single reviewer it seems (myself included) had the exact same experience with Stephen King's Fairy Tale. Glad you found Needful Things, too! I've read them all and put Needful Things in my top 10, but very few people do. I'll be starting Memory, Sorrow and Thorn in January and am pretty excited!

Fairy Tale was a wild ride. I don't understand why King decided to write the story in that way. I lhope you will love MST!!

Looking forward to a longer review of Licanius or even better, a review of The Will of the Many. I’m enjoying my read of Licanius but Will of the Many was such an impressive start to a series with great character work but also an interesting and surprising plot with world building inserted seamlessly in the story.

GRRM himself said Osten Ard Saga (the bigger multi-series Memory, Sorrow, and Thron is a part of) is one of his biggest inspirations.
I haven't tried it yet because even ASOIAF is a bit too political/slow for me, but I enjoyed it in 2010 because I already saw season 1 of the show and I was hooked for life. And afaik Tad Williams's prose is even slower paced :D

The licanius Trilogy was quite complex .. especially given one of the magic systems he chose to use and the multi POV epic fantasy feel to it. I had a few issues but overall I was impressed with how well Islington handled it as a debut Trilogy 👏🏼

"No" is the short answer, I wouldn't let others (nevermind people online) pick what I read :).
(I listen to _recommendations_ from others of course, that's basically the point of Booktube as far as i'm concerned - Patreon might lead to good "book club" type discussions but UA-cam basically never does from what i've seen - and if an old friend who knows what I like _raves_ about a book there's a good chance i'll check it out. But _mostly_ I suspect it'll end up with a similar hit ratio that you got and life is _way_ too short to waste that much time on "bad" books)

I have been a fan of some creators that have done things like: read every book they are given, etc, and this experiment can cause problems. I'm paraphrasing one of them, "it's disrespectful to send some one or expect someone to read a book that they would not like.
Lol. I'm into politics as well, but only because I am trying to write literary works that drive honest culture, not one that is forced on us like some of the woke(weak) ideology.
You would not like my work, because I like to spice it with a lot of humor, satire and ridiculousness. I would never want you to read any of it, even though we probably see eye to eye on some socio-political ideals. Some of your friends would like my work. I'm trying to get some of them interested in my debut novel now.
