Lowkey thought this was cruel until i read up on it and stone crabs can literally just detach their own claws like a lizards tail to escape predators and then they will just regrow their claws. all in all i would say this is pretty green. they continue to live to see another day.

I have tried them twice, and maybe i just did not get the quality that most people seem to get, because i would rank them below dungeness, king, snow, and even blue crab, is there some kind of rating for their claws like beef, like prime , choice, select, anyone know ?
King crab (especially the live ones) is likely more expensive than stone crab. And much tastier.
Yes they grade them, and there are even different types of stone crabs. They are a tougher, stringier meat that’s less flakey. Often they have an iodine flavor as well.
I tend to like them. I get them for 1/4 the cost of the kings so it’s a good deal to me but it all is what people like.

It os legal to take both claws if they meet the standards. They survive with one much higher then none.
Before you guys comment the cruelty on the animal, u should know that crabs can detach their claws and regrow it later during the molting.
The irony here in that business insider has another video detailing how unsustainable this actually is. Something like 35%-65% of the crabs thrown back end up dying.
