The genius of Little Feat, the Man with the Twang & pop’s greatest scandal in the making

  • We stuck a few coins in this week’s Wurlitzer and these were the tunes that got played …
… when records became all about sound not songs.
… Fonzworth Bentley, Puff Daddy’s butler, the man who held an umbrella over him on the beach at Cannes.
… what Henry Kissinger, Martha Stewart and Leonardo DiCaprio kept very quiet about.
    … Manchester’s Co-Op, a tale of unprecedented hopelessness.
… what’s the definition of a song? And can you steal a record?
… the magical skill of Aston Barrett on I Shot The Sheriff and James Jamerson on You Can’t Hurry Love.
… ‘Duane Eddy Does Bob Dylan’ and its ingenious sleeve.
… does anybody still want pop posters?
… “I'd watch Jeremy Clarkson boil an egg.”
… Moneybagg Yo & DaBaby, Cigarettes After Sex and other acts playing the O2 and Wembley Arena we’ve ever heard of.
    … the ultimate autograph.
… and New Whirl Odor, Road To Rouen, Sax And Violins, Lead Me Not Into Penn Station and other tortuous album titles.

Just the other day I scored a Warner Brothers Music Show sew-on patch on Ebay from a guy that worked for the label in the U.K. He told me he saw Little Feat on every show on that tour and in 1977 as well. Lucky chap, that's all I can say.

Just as Duane Eddy died the local ancient music shop Ziggy's, on 3rd Street in Phoenix closed its doors. It was the shop that Duane legendarily swapped a Fender guitar for his twangy Gretsch that he played on his hit records with. The world works like that.

I had three little feat bootlegs out yesterday, 73,santa monica 74 electrif lycanthrope and 75 at wembley, i love em, yeah sneaking sally through the alley as well thats great too. I saw little feat at byron bay in2004 no Lowell obviously but everyone else was there and they rocked like crazy, still had Ritchie Heywood on drums, they were still bloody good , they played twice at that festival.

@richardfinlayson1524. There are a few more Little Feat bootlegs out there from the Lowell George era. There’s one called “Rampant Syncopatio” which includes songs from “The Last Record Album”. It has been released on CD titled “Live In Italy” - possibly with some tracks added/removed. I have a copy of one on cassette tape called “Beak Positive” with the alternative title “Live In Paris” which is possibly a recording of Little Feat “supporting” The Doobie Brothers when Warner Bros. sent their “Music Show” to the U.K. and Europe in early 1975. The LF tape of their show is only 35 - 38 minutes long. There is another LF live bootleg called “On The Other Foot” from the Lowell George era as I recall. So lots to seek out and listen to. Apparently the band has always given their blessing on these live recordings being made available to all and sundry.
Interesting fact. Apparently Lowell George himself “tweaked” the production of the tapes for “Electrif Lycanthrope”. Look up a YT contributor called Earl Guthrie. He is the “go to” guy for recordings/videos of the vintage, reformed and latest incarnations of the band. Stay safe and well

@richardfinlayson1524. Just another point to mention regarding Little Feat bootleg recordings. I don’t believe Lowell and the band ever played “Wembley” back in 1975.
LF were not that “big” a band back in the day to fill either The Empire Pool (now Wembley Arena) or Wembley Stadium (an open air sports arena) as concert venues. So the bootleggers were looking to get the $/£ from the LF “completists”!
In 1976 LF did play a stadium gig during the spring/summer here in the U.K. They supported The Who at Charlton F.C. in south east London. Apparently LF’s show was going great until a fan decided to climb up either the lighting rig or one of the stadium floodlight towers close to the stage! Apparently the band watched this guy while continuing to play in case he fell on to the stage. I’m sure there is film of LF playing this show somewhere out there.

Mr. Kenny Gradney - bass player with Little Feat from 1973 until this present moment. Kenny is the man who played the “holes” for the other guys in the band - or session, to “shine through”. So like the late great Lowell George said to not take this piece of musicianship lightly.

Such a shame we never hear Little Feat's asymmetrical funk on commercial radio. Perennially overlooked. Not an easy band to cover as the musical changes are very haphazard seeming. That being said, I love Tal Mahal's horntastic 1997 cover of 'Feats Don't Fail Me Now'. Richie Hayward's medical bill charges were on the back cover of 'Last Record Album'. which displayed an odd, macabre sense of humour! .

@philiphalpenny9761.With regard to Richie Hayward’s hospital invoices. Apparently Richie loved to ride his motorcycle - but unfortunately he kept falling off/crashing it. Don’t know if he was a bad rider or there were “other influences” regarding his driving ability. I am sure that on the video for Little Feat’s “Long Distance Love”, Richie is sporting a black eye (maybe?).

@philiphalpenny9761. A bit off topic but……. In the event of Lowell George bio - pic EVER being made, how about Jack Black or Matt Berry (Toast Of London) in the lead role? Beards and hair suitably dyed and styled for the time period, maybe one or the other of these actors as younger/older Lowell. Matt Berry has actually recorded his own albums, so there’s a shoe - in right away!
Have you heard the Lowell George tribute album “Rock And Roll Doctor”? Various line - ups of LF, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, J. D. Souther (“Roll Um Easy” ) Bob Seger, etc. cover Lowell’s tunes and some standards. A Japanese musician covers “Long Distance Love” and the slide guitar is played by long time LF associate Elliott Ingber. Well worth a listen if you can find it. Stay safe and well.

Little Feat also backed up Japanese singer/pianist/songwriter Akiko Yano on her first lp Japanese Girl. She sought them out and word is they refused payment for the first day of rehearsal because musically she was so far beyond them they felt embarrassed. Got two of the guys to sign her cd when they played the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock Arkansas.
