Well, being "lazy" is one of the key "rules" of good musicianship. Minimizing movement and the transition is very important. He got far more out of it than just reduced movement.... he got the sustain and the tone that the way he fretted the chords gave. That's the magic and why the guy has amazed and inspired millions.
This is not a new technique. I love metal and everything but this a technique used in classical guitar which has been used for a very very long time. Francisco Tárrega, a composer who was a classical guitar composer used this technique in his pieces a lot.

Without Mustaine’s early riffs it’s arguable if Metallica would’ve ever taken off to begin with. Dave didn’t lose Metallica, Metallica lost Dave.

It’s just muscle memory. Once you’ve practiced it for a bit it becomes second nature. This is nothing compared to some chord structures guitarists hit effortlessly all of the time. Try hitting a GADD9 without missing a beat.

The spider cord technique is also being used in the main riff of Holy wars - the punishment due. As a fellow guitar player I'd recommend learning this technique. It will help you tremendously in the future

That's crazy. I remember watching the Wake Up Dead video on Mtv when I was in high school and watched him doing that chord progression and noticed how he was able to fluidly move up the neck and wondered what he was doing and was never able to do it myself. Whenever I tried to play that part myself, there was always a choppy sound to it as I changed strings. Neat.
