I head to Zurich to get underway at the press launch of the updated car, and in particular the S63 4MATIC+ from AMG that now comes with a 612PS / 900Nm Biturbo V8 as found in the E63 S and GT R models from AMG. In conjunction with the new power plant we also have a 9-speed AMG Speedshift gearbox, the new 4 wheel drive 4MATIC+ system and many more technological highlights.
Let's take a look around the car in detail and then jump in for a drive to experience the dynamic drive control that's now in the S Class for the first time.

How's the AMG GTR, Ford GT, and GT3 applications coming along? That's three coming in, what's gonna go?
Soon more on this. The AMG GT R and GT3 will arrive in the coming months. The Ford GT is still 2019.
I think mine might have spoiled me. I don't know how I could ever downgrade to something lesser than an S class now.

Porsche 14 I love the S63 face-lift design and don't mind the Maybach face-lift. But the S65 and non AMG designs I'm not a fan of.
Some look great, some look tacky and overstyled.

AMG make the best turbo sounding engines
It's not true that the turbos don't muffle the sound. Turbocharged AMGs still sound awesome but the sound is completely different from the Naturaly Aspirated cars.

That's what people are aiming with "these" cars. Even C63s has an updated ECU and TCU just for those pops and bangs.
I would take this over any Rolls Royce. It's way cheaper more fun to drive and I feel that Rolls Royce's are made for older poeple. Nice video Tim, I love your videos because you show us in depth reviews like no other you tube channel, keep up the amazing work.

Andrey Wrong. The average age of owners is far different. It's like 10-20 years younger for the Rolls Royce. The S Class is like 50-60 years old. I have checked
I like the Rolls more actually (coupe and droptops that is), but that old BMW 7-series screen and old tech kills it completly for me! Im not gonna pay twice the price of what looks and probably feels like a much older car!
Philip Hjort remember BMW always lead the field with technology along with Audi so that older screen is still likely better then the Command system, why? Because the command system is way too complicated and full of sub menus, not to mention the input control is ridiculous to use. The technology in the Rolls Royce is still up to standards, it's got far more going for it then just that and in fact it's not reliant on all these gimmicks the S Class has instead it does the best any car can do, be the best car to travel in.

A tip for the navigation lady ... while she's talking, hit the audio mute button (or volume minus button a few times) on the steering wheel and she shuts up (or is quieter) but the navi continues. Once you finish filming you can bring her back on the navi screen.

Hi Tim good review of this AMG!! I think the good recipe for a luxury saloon car were proper like this AMG because you don't feel the tiredness during the long trip and you can enjoy of staggering shoves and overtake who you want !!

Thank you Tim; enjoyable and very knowledgeable as usual. I'm 70 and read all the car periodicals. The car mags and even Monkey Harris and Steve Sutcliffe have got to get their act together if they're going to keep our interest. Four wheel drifting etc becomes monotonous without the detailed information you give; they're beginning to be overtaken by you, Mr JWW etc; look at the view numbers. Keep it up.

We had this car for a few weeks now. It looks great but the 4.0 liter engine is just not fitting...Also there won't be a Brabus S850 version anymore because of the new engine...well...still got the proper V12 though...

It's not been released yet for the facelifted version of this generation. So, unless you want a pre-facelifted car (and therefore technically not the latest S-Class), the 63 is the top dog. And also, the 65 is RWD only.

And Panamera Turbo S, with and without e-Hybrid, the latter of which, at 680hp, would be off in the distance while the others are fiddling with their gadgets.
Nice review as always. My 2 pesos? On balance I would take the old car with the new drivetrain and driver assistance/safety systems.
For example, losing the Dual View option on the front screen, which allowed the driver to access vehicle information while the front passenger simultaneously watches a video, is a retrograde step, as is removing the CD/DVD changer in favour of a hole for the key, which I'm unsure why I would take from my pocket (surely the whole point of Keyless Go). I know MP3/WMA/AAC music files are the in thing, but does nobody see the incongruity in offering $6k sound systems with implied associations with audiophile-level studio/domestic equipment and then taking away the facility to feed it with decent quality source material?
The styling changes are neither better nor worse, in my opinion - although I much preferred the previous tail-light illumination.
*I find it such a shame* that we are heading towards a time where the "pure and proper" driving experience with the driver being in full control of the car will disappear... Ok it is relaxing and comfortable to let the car drive itself without having to do anything but *where is the fun in that* ? So much technology is too much technology for me!

I definitely agree with that point, it is the evolution of technology and basically the evolution of our world, although I would say that sending a fax or a text on your mobile phone doesn't give you the same "experience" as driving a car... ;) I mean, don't get me wrong, I am totally up for progress and improvement but I feel like technology is taking some of that "experience" from us especially in the car industry
Tim, you almost sound like a Tesla fanboy now. They always bring up Nokia, Kodak, horseless carriages or something similar to make their points. We all love technology. Who doesn't drive a car with airbags, ABS, power steering, etc. etc?
But there is a point where we as car guys can say 'I just don't want this'. I know I do.
I do not want a car that drives itself. I don't mind having the feature, though. As long as I can decide whether to use it or not. And that's the problem. Because although it is all fun and games in it's current form, wait for the day that goverments and car haters (they reside in Sillicon Valley) make these technologies manditory. Because a very small amount of people is not capable of driving their own cars safely. Fine, take the bus, get an autonomous car. But DO NOT, force me to drive one as well.
After the 'innovation buzz' wears off (which it will) we are left with a destroyed car industry, full of universal cars that all drive and feel exactly the same.
That's the point about these 'future predictions'; there is never any good in it for petrolheads. Unless you care about one trick pony's that accelerate quickly of the line or being in the backseat playing on an Ipad. But in my opinion you're not a car guy than.
Let's all hope the way we drive remains a CHOICE for everybody. Take the bike, take the bus, heck; take an autonomous car. But don't force me to drive one. I'm perfectly capable to drive a car myself.
You can turn most if not all of these assistance systems off so it's not really much of an issue. It's there if you want to take the edge off (especially when stuck in traffic or on the motorway) but if you want to have that "pure and proper" driving experience it's only a few button presses away.

Thanks for the comprehensive review sir. I would have loved it to have been of the 2WD version, which as you know has some fancy extra chassis technology and is the only one available in right-hand-drive markets.
I also wonder if there is a custom setting that would allow all the dynamic elements to be set to extreme except for the exhaust, which I would tire of very quickly on a four hour run.

Maybach starting price at China is 420,000 USD. Not including road TAX and number plate. 10000 TO 18000 USD will cost for number plate if you live at Beijing and Shanghai.
For imports vehicle over 4000cc engine is 125% of import Tax. Just too much money to purchase imports vehicle.

I've the new E63s 4-Matic plus Edition I car and its as luxurious as the S-Class AMGS.
Better performance the E63sTechnology much lighter car and having same luxury better performance using scroll Bi-turbos for improved responsiveness professional dynamic engine Mount's and ceramic brakes package too there's much to like with the E63s 4-Matic plus Edition-1 car with is a step up from the C63s Motorsport or the Hammer 🔨.
Best combination of luxury and performance in the Mercedes-Benz range.

I've always wondered why people talk about AWD as a safety feature. In my opinion it's not. The car will still understeer in to a hedgde if you come to quick in to a corner, and AWD does not make a car stop any quicker. Yes, you can floor it out of a corner and not be afraid that the back will come around, and you will not get stuck that easily - but apart from that, I really don't see the huge benefits in terms of safety.

The only thing bad about this car is the display. Why not keep a classy analog display? The LED's are polarized, so if you are wearing sunglasses, you might have a hard time reading the dashboard.

I don't mind autonomous driving, it's a great thing to relax and let the car do the stuff especially on restricted, dense highways or in traffic BUT only as long as I can drive the car properly! Talking Tesla Model 3.. all controls are on the screen etc and it's kinda hard to drive the car by yourself.. on some roads you cannot or don't want to let the car drive itself
I nearly lost my shit when you said that the car might be 120.000£ to start, followed by "it's not cheap". In Denmark, this cars starting price is about 400.000£ without ANY extra enhancements... ;(
What about the self driving capabilities? Is it a level 3 like the new Audi A8 which even makes Tesla's self driving technology looking ancient?

The new steering wheel makes a big difference. I don't know what they were thinking with the original steering wheel they put in these cars. It was so bad, I would have gone with the BMW M760i over this for that reason alone.
Im a big Mercedes fan... But I hate the look of the steering wheel. And I dont think Mercedes is doing a very good job with the screens design/integration like BMW.
Got to admit I love it but I don’t like the AMG wheels. Personally I’d take the new Audi A8 (s8 when it arrives) over this, Audi fanboy at heart
