I think it's so cool that a book from 1892 can still scare the crap out of us. You go Bram Stoker ❤️
It’s from 1897 but yes, I agree.
Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, and Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark are really good horror films. This man knows how to make good, entertaining films.
The autopsy of Jane doe, is my favorite horror movie of all time
Interesting (and useful) review aside, it's wonderful to see you happy and upbeat again after your long ordeal with Grommet! He's so blessed to have a loving "pet parent" like you!
To think that one chapter in such an iconic book can spawn a whole film is mind-blowing. Now I want to see a Victorian-era set film based on the chapters dealing with the 'Bloofer Lady' (aka the vampire that Lucy Westenra becomes), and I want to see an historically accurate (non-superhero comicbook) film on Abraham Van Helsing's journey that led him to finally confront the king of vampires he'd been searching for his entire life (sure, Huge Jackman was great in Van Helsing, but that's really a live-action Castlevania film and not a film that reflects the Holmesian medical doctor character portrayed in Stoker's Dracula).
Maybe the tight shots were done to emphasize the claustrophobic nature of being trapped on a ship at sea? Thanks for another great review! ❤
Love Trollhunter and Jane Doe
I'm on a budget, so I can't wait to double feature this at home with Renfield as the second movie! Maybe I'll do a themed dinner + drinks for a cheap date night. Dracula is one of my fave books and I looooove creature features. Thanks for reviewing, Emma!
OK... excited to watch your take on this... I am seeing it Saturday morning with some of my cousins. You and I agree on about 95% on our opinions on films. We were different on The Meg 2 as I love to let go of reality and enjoy a brainless, senseless, nonsensical popcorn flick from time to time.
Got tickets for the 5p.m. premiere tomorrow.
Been waiting for a long time since the first trailer it seems.
The Demeter episode was a highlight of the original Nosferatu.
Fingers crossed!
Love vampires...
Worth the wait!Enjoyed it very much. Effective adaptation (pretty much) of the Dracula Chapter.
Liked the look they gave Dracula. Thought it was threatening.🦇
In these days of super bloated budgets it was nice watching a movie where all the money was actually on screen. The art design was spot on.
Have a great weekend!
I’m excited for this one. Love the Dracula book and this chapter is always amazing.
This Bram Stoker fella is going places!
I was a little dubious about this one, even though it looked good, simply because it is based on such a short story. I will watch it at home, but will definately watch it. Thank you.
Thanks for the review! Catching the premiere here tomorrow and super excited.
Dang that Morbius' special appearance though.
Strangely enough, I've been looking forward to this movie for over a decade now. Viggo Mortensen was atatched to star in it, and I guess that fell through. So glad uts finally out
Hello from texas ,always look forward to ur reviews ❤
Can't wait to see and review this at my channel too...Good to see practical effects used as much as possible and for this section of Bram Stoker's Dracula to finally be explored on celluloid.
Nice, honest encouraging review. Love your style.
Stephen Sherrard-Griffith Talks Movies At The Bar 🍺🍺😁
Saw it; loved it. Period/gothic horror is my favorite. It’s a shame Universal dumped it in August instead of October. The acting, cinematography, creature and sound design, score are all top notch.
I just rewatched the BBC series, Dracula, on Netflix. The second series is about this journey so I’m curious to see if they pad it out in this movie.
If you’re expecting it to follow exactly the Captain’s Log chapter in Bram Stoker’s book, without giving away too many spoilers you will be disappointed
Thanks as always for you review, keep on doing your thing which is our thing 👍
Just watched it last night and it blew me away. Really wasn't expecting to like it so much. The cinematography, acting, music and make up effects were outstanding!
I was looking forward to this one but I think Ima wait for stream.
I'm super excited to see this one!
Loved the music on the way to the movies👍🏾
The creature design is giving me Midnight Mass vibes. Between that and your review, this looks awesome!
That’s exactly what he looks like, the “Angel” from Midnight Mass
Ooooh was super excited to hear what you thought of this!!!! Very helpful framing for before I watch- thank you!
Hey Emma, great video again. Love the come with me reviews. I got everything I wanted from this and appreciated that they went practical for effects when they could. I actually quite enjoyed the ending. I wish we could talk spoilers!
I got to watch this on Monday after learning of a free screening by hosted by Studio Canal. I rather liked the fact that Dracula was portrayed as a cruel, sadistic beast, seeing as how this would be an instance where he wouldn't need to pretend to be otherwise.
Although I nearly gave it a 7, I chose an 8 on the strength of the characters and resolution surpassing any reservations I had with the story's gimmick and certain CG shots. Interesting direction and soundtrack also boosted my view.
Love the Twin Peaks poster!!!
I've always loved two particular sections from the book _Dracula._ One is the newspaper articles about the "bloofer lady", and the other is the log of the _Demeter._ I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about them. I'm glad the latter is getting the full cinematic treatment, but I have to say one of the best aspects of it has always been its ambiguity. My imagination always runs away with me in both those sections. I wonder how that was handled in this film? Can it stay ambiguous enough to capture all that dread and despair and still fill out a feature-length film? I'm a bit skeptical. Probably the most evocative version of the sequence in film is also the briefest: the scene in Werner Herzog's version of _Nosferatu,_ where it has all happened already. We see the captain, dead, lashed to the wheel, as the ship somehow drifts into port on its own, as though guided by an invisible malevolent force. It's an incredible sequence. Although Herzog's _Nosferatu_ is a loose adaptation (borrowing from both Stoker's novel and the original German silent film), it captures the slow-burn, skin-crawling terror of a nightmare. No jump scares, just unbelievable creepiness.
EDIT: Actually - I remembered after posting this that we DO get more of it in _Nosferatu._ But not much. Just enough. Very worthwhile film. The English version is available on UA-cam (official - free with ads), but the German version is better, if you can find it.
I'm going to see it today actually. If you've ever watched Bram Stoker's Dracula with Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins they do depict Dracula being transported by ship only briefly. So it should be interesting to see how they elaborate on that. Great review by the way. Very well delivered.
Yeah it’s based on the captains log chapter :) I say that
It was also depicted in Nosferatu (1922)
Reading the chapter from the book got me excited for this movie. I'll be watching regardless!
Good review, i been looking forward to this one. Stay spooky and stay beautiful, Emma!
Thanks for the review, Emma. I may still give the film a look this weekend, just because I like the premise and it sounds like a classic horror story set in an isolated place. Also, I had the opportunity to meet David Dastmalchian a couple of months ago at a comic convention. Very nice guy and a real classic horror fan. So, one more reason to see the film.
Based on the trailer, I'm sure that the dog and other animals will be Dracula's first targets. I'm already mentally prepared. I expect Dracula to be the purveyor of all evil deeds. 🧛♂
I’m freaking out because I’ve been anticipating this one for a long while now and because of my fest schedule I don’t know when I’ll get to see it 😆 Hopefully soon!
Jane Doe was absolutely fantastic!!!
Slayed, Served, Devoured.
💕
I really loved the soundtrack. It's definitely something I will be playing around Halloween. Also, the special effects were pretty awesome. All the gore waa well done.
Hoping to see the sneak peak tomorrow. Can't wait. Highly anticipated in my house
Thanks for the Review and Video 😀
kind of spooky when the carlights from the car behind came on.
Thanks for the review, when I watched the trailer it somehow got me hyped, looking forward to the cinema release ! ✌️
Same vibes. I'm a super fan of vampire movies but I prefer quality over quantity. Blessings for You and Gromit 🍀✨🍀✨🍀✨
@@buonavitae987 Reply or was it supposed as a new comment ? 😂✌️
@@_TheViewer_ both haha, I'm a bit in a hurry.
@@buonavitae987 All Good, all good, best wishes to Gromit 👌🥳
Javier Botet is a living legend
Great review and THANK YOU for giving it a score. So many reviewers now like Stuckman and Jeremy don't even both with a rating but it helps in deciding if we should buy a ticket. A 6 is good enough for me to buy a ticket as I'm a sucker for creature features. I love them all. Excellent work.
Love for that sweet dog is always my favorite part!
Great show…❤❤❤❤
Great watching this now 😊
I've seen some of the shots of Dracula and it looks pretty cool. Sounds like a fun (if slight) film. :)
Good review and cool video Emma!👉😃👈
I will say you still did a good job with the pronunciation!
Yay!! 🥹🥹🥹
🎵 the world is a spooky astronaut🎵
Dracula sea of blood is the title for spanish speaking countries (as far as I know). It is a good movie. It portraits very well vampire mythology from Bram Stoker in a 95%. I like when all rumanians who were delivering the cargo didn't want to help. It kind of shows that vibe at the beginning of the book, which are not represented in other movies.
About to go see it later tonight. I am sooooo excited!
She’s wrong about the VOD, what makes the movie is feeling like you’re on the ship and hearing the ship creak not knowing which creak is Dracula sneaking up behind you
An excellent review. I saw it on the opening day, and really enjoyed it. A different take on the Dracula saga altogether. Just as an aside, there is no chapter 7 in Dracula titled The Captain's Log. Chapter 7 is titled Cutting from "The Dailygraph," 8 August.
Gr8 review as usual. I differ with you on one certain aspect. This movie was made for the big screen. The rickety ship, the rain, the thunderstorms, the sound editing. Factor in the extremely dark tone and atmosphere and you really get a theatrical experience. This film reminds me of Master and Commander : The Far Side of the World. Gr8 vid as always. 🎥 🍿 🌭 🧛♂️ ❤️🌺
I loved Trollhunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe, so definitely going to see this one. Thanks for the review!
I’m looking forward to the movie. I always thought that part of the book would make an awesome movie on its own, and I’m not aware if there’s even a comic book adaptation of it
the vampire didn't have to be dracula, should have just have been a random one i think.
It had to be Dracula if you’re going to tell the story of the Demeter. The Demeter is the ship that carries Dracula from Transylvania to London in the Bram Stoker novel. In the book you barely get a few pages about the Demeter. You only get to know the arrival of the ship to a London port and one other thing, but I don’t want to share potential spoilers.
It’s based on the novel Dracula. It had to be him!
I had been waiting for months to watch it at the cinema, as it was supposed to be released at my place only yesterday. But eh! for some reasons, all of the theaters decided to cancel it. I managed to watch it anyway, not on the big screen though. But I surprisingly really enjoyed it, despite some flaws. I agree watching it at the theater would have had such a bigger impact visually, but the music was so efficient I can't help feeling I missed out a little big. Anyway I enjoyed it, and certainly will watch it again someday when I want a vampire movie.
I'm a big fan of the book and glad that something was made out of this. I think that it's time to revive the Prince of darkness in his own stand alone movie. It's a fantastic story and would make a great trilogy. Can't wait for this film. We could have a prequel and then a sequel to round off the story. Good vampire stories are hard to come by. They tend to get cheesy😂I remember watching Bram Stoker's Dracula at the cinema. That was brilliant at the time.👍👍
It’s coming out next year w Bill Skarsgard
@@VanityDivined fantastic, he's brilliant 👍
I agree! I'd love to see a prequel and a sequel.
I went through Dracula by Bram Stoker on Audible last spooky season and really enjoyed it (for the most part). I would love to see if a creative auteur-type could bring an updated telling into the 21st century via FaceTime, Zoom, IG posts, TikTok, Snapchat, Swarm/FourSquare, YT videos, vlogs, found footage, etc. [My youngest adopted a hen, who just wandered into our yard one day, and named her Demeter, so we would be going anyway 😆.]
Nobody is safe on that ship not even the little boy they all die
No kidding? In the book a soulless ghost ship sails into harbor. I'm was expecting a happy ending.
Definitely watching it home Vampires terrify me
I'm still planing to see it at the theater, I love me some dracula, just waiting for it to release in my country
I saw the film a couple of days ago and I enjoyed. The cast is great, and the set design gave the film a solid ambience. I agree though that the story is simple and there is nothing new to the lore of Dracula. His appearance was impressive (very Nosferatu) and it's a good creature feature. Overall, I give it a score of 6/10.
Hi Emma! thank you for your reviews, I love them. Let us know how Gromit is doing!
The BBC adaptation 'Dracula' a couple of years ago was well done for anyone who didnt watch it yet.
Am excited to watch Dracula:the last Voyage of Demeter horror movie(2023)
Exceeded my expectations
I didn't think you had movie theaters and roads in Australia. I learn something new everyday.
Y’all funny
Saw it today and I loved it.
Going to check this one out tonight. Hopefully I like it lol but I can't wait to review it.
I need my Dracula itch scratched for real! Hopefully a new monster universe will take off
I’m assuming it’s not at the same level as Bram Stoker’s Dracula? CGI looks meh based on the trailer. Movies dealing with vampires have never been my thing with Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), Nosferatu (1922), Let the Right One In (2008) and Interview with the Vampire (1994) being the only ones that stood out.
Been looking forward to seeing this movie since I saw the trailer
I loved this movie! Maybe it's just the massive vampire fan in me, but it's honestly one of my favorite versions of Dracula and I hope they make a sequel or prequel soon! It was a very simple story but I didn't mind that personally. I do agree with you about the tight shots. I would've also liked to hear a little bit more about Dracula's back story... but overall I thought they did a great job making a horrifying vampire. It's a nice change from the usual way vampires are portrayed.
How did the nighttime lighting compare to Nope?
Very different ones at scene nope was in a valley, you can’t really compare the wide landscapes
dont you think with the enclosed shots it was done to portray how enclosed you are on a ship. yes, you can see for miles but you are actually trapped by the size of the boat. its actually quite a claustrophobic thing for me. i always look at boats/ships that way. i do realise that is an odd way to look at it and most see it the other way as out in a massive expanse.
Not entirely because they were done even in happy moments during the film. Then during some haunting moments it was more closed in… wasn’t consistent with toning
Mr. Clemens later becomes Blacula in his attempt to overcome racism.
Dracula just have some fun on the Demeter!!! I really enjoy this movie!!!
Seeing it tomorrow mate tah
I really want to see this but the UK release has been postponed indefinitely due to the distribution changing hands.
Been reading about this film for over a year. I am shocked you haven't.
This looks good. In America it's just Last Voyage of the Demeter.
They've been showing too much of the creature in promos here in the US.
Don't watch trailers
Definitely 7 at if 10 Definitely go to the theater see it if you can
I mean this very much sounds like my sort of thing! Almost everything you said about it.
I have a gift card that I plan on using to go watch this film in theaters :)
I'll definitely watch Talk To Me instead then.
Talk to Me is the best of 2023 so far.
Ship setting makes it worth it. Wish it was scarier but the design of Dracula was so cool. Like half bat half weak Voldemort. 3/5
After the film i really want a 30 days of night type of vampires again 😁 cause SPOILERS after the ship this is where Dracula devlops his personality and appear normal to other people
🖤
Are you going to watch a Merchant of Venice?
really pissed that a film about dracula coming to england is not being screened here in the uk due to distribution company going bust and closed its uk base a few weeks ago.i waited so long to see this movie
Damn I had no idea!!!
I Guess The Ending Was Bad?
It’s all pretty consistent. I would have said I didn’t like the ending
I was less enthusiastic for this after I watched the Dracula series. Same story. How can it be beaten?
You watch movies alone right
Did the dog die?
Yeah :(
The 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula will always be the best rendition and I feel like ever since then it's always a wanna-be copycat version that never succeeds. Another example of this would be the handmaid's tale that was remade many times and wasn't done well until recently. It is the best. None of the originals( ie Nosferatu ect)ever had the "scary-looking" bat Dracula that was taken from Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece. I've been such a fan & a critic of any Dracula movie. It's my favorite & a line from it was the first tattoo on my back. This is a hard pass for me.Sorry but I adore your reviews!
Completely agree.
