The comeback of Ernie Irvan, however only days earlier Rick Baldwin had passed away after being in a coma for over a decade. The track Baldwin had crashed at to put him into that coma: Michigan.

This race was Ken Squier's final time as the lap by lap announcer for CBS. Mike Joy would take over that role at the Die Hard 500 later that season. Squier would continue as host and TBS announcer for two more years. Of course he still does a few laps of the Southern 500 for NBC.

Dale Earnhardt debuted his Plus on the hood paint scheme this race which would be made famous the next year at Daytona

This would be Ken Squier's final race as the lap-by-lap announcer for CBS; starting with the Talladega race in October, Mike Joy would call lap-by-lap announcements for CBS and would do so until CBS' contract to broadcast NASCAR races expired after the 2000 season.

This would also turn out to be Irvan's last win at Robert Yates Racing, as he would move to Nelson Bowers' team for the '98 season.

Ernie Irvan is another one of those legends along with Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, Kyle Petty, Harry Gant, Tim Richmond, and Davey Allison that should of won at least one chamionship in there NASCAR career but Earnhardt, Gordon, and God had other plans..

Mike Skinner had a similar crash to the one in this race at Darlington in 2001. He also had a hard crash in the opening laps at Chicago in 2001 as well

The first 2 drivers to congratulate Ernie were his 2 good friends Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon. I cried watching this live when he won. Ernie Irvan to me will always be a champion

lol wow... at the 25min mark a tv commentator mentions that Dale's team adjusted the body. Today, that got Jimmi Johnson and the 48 team is big trouble. So much has changed......

Oh man, thank you SO MUCH! I haven't seen this since the day it happened...
I remember wanting Bill Elliott to win so badly, that I was somewhat disappointed that Ernie won, at the time. Of course, looking back, Bill won a few more times, so it's all good. This was pretty special.

Why would you post a car race and tell everyone who won before they watch it?

Because it's a famous race and most people searching for it are looking for it because of who won. In 1994 the driver that won was nearly killed at the track during practice. He cut down a tire going nearly 200mph and suffered a basilar skull fracture. He almost bled out in the car and was only given a 10% chance of living. This same injury killed a bunch of drivers during this time period including Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty's Grandson. The deaths of all these drivers would eventually lead to sweeping changes in the name of safety which would end up killing the sport. Now the sport has morphed into something that doesn't even resemble what is was during the 90s.

2:06:36 How come there weren't any Ford decals on the 28 car?

    • @Bandito8487

If I remember right it was because Yates and Ford had a disagreement about funding and support, so he pulled the Blue Ovals off of his cars for that race.

Also Ernie had run afoul of Ford execs when he showed up late to a banquet that season with Texaco execs in attendance, it was to thank then for ten years of support and unveil the special "1987" retro Texaco scheme. Jarrett treated the guests well, Ernie showed up late. Irvan also got involved in a bar fight over Easter weekend that year. That was the final straw and Yates did not renew Irvan's deal.

This is the same weekend Earnhardt and Gordon raced down into turn 3 in practice, any Gordon was on the inside and Dale drove it hard into turn 3 on the outside of Jeff and it sucked Jeff's car around and slammed the outside wall. I have a video of that practice crash in my channel. Here's the link:
