I found a route that makes Duonia owe me money: I'll go 1 Down (8 silver), 2 Left (4), 2 Down (16), 4 Right (24), 3 Up (3), 1 Left (1), 1 Down (2), 1 Left (0), 1 Down (0), 1 Left (-2), 2 Down (-8), 3 Right, and you're at the destination with a net tax of -2 silver.
@@Graham226 How exactly? After 3rd step, I'm at the intersection of the leftmost vertical street and second from bottom horizontal street. I checked my route multiple times when I came up with it, there are no mistakes.
@@Graham226 I don't know what kind of spreadsheet you used but that is just overcomplicating things, this is a simple "draw a line on the grid" task that is best done with a pen and grid paper if you really want to confirm how my route goes. I start where the pilgrim is at the start of the problem, at the middle of the top street. You must have misunderstood my instructions in the original comment, because after the third step the pilgrim isn't even near the destination. She hasn't even gone to right once, which would be required to get there. After the fourth step she in turn is very close to the destination, just one street above it. If you still disagree, I can draw you a demonstration of how my route is supposed to look.

So inefficient. 1 loop of that is 4 walking units and earns you 1 silver. Instead bring enough silver to declare the northeast corner as your destination (which is at most 8 silver, assuming you live in the gate), then walk in a gigantic loop passing the gate, then the temple in that order over and over again. It takes 16 walking units, but earns you 127 silver, for a net of 16.9375 silver per walking unit, as opposed to 0.25. A 6675% increase in profit margins. Even if walking from 1 walking unit is 1 hour, it is still more efficient to go 2 blocks each, than 1 block. 8 walking units, assuming the space to fit it in, 16 gained on the downswing, and then a cost of 1 on the upswing, for a net of 15, or 1.875 per hour, a 650% increase, and I am not convinced it is 1 hour to walk that distance. Assuming that the pilgrim cannot sleep outside, and that she walked the entire day from the moment she walked up, 22 walking units were covered. At worst, that is a rate of 1.375 walking units per hour assuming a 16 hour walking day, but assuming an 8 hour walking day, that is 2.75, or 2 full loops, and a maximum of 3 walking units away from the northeast corner. Given a distance further than that, you might have to resort to a smaller loop on your second pass, but anything is more efficient than walking around a single block.

yep that's well known phenomenon on graphs: sometimes, if you consider edges with negative weight and there are loops in your graph, you might end up with a path that gives you arbitrarily large negative final values an algorithm that can be used to detect these loops is the Bellman-Ford algorithm, which can be implemented to profit on top of arbitrage
once the pilgrimage is done, actually yes, since that rule only applies during the pilgrimage - hit the temple, be done with it and get them riches and I guess Cee was meaning "you" in general, why hasn't someone showed up and broken the city yet?
The Pilgrimage ends once they arrive at the Temple, meaning they are no longer bound by the rules of said pilgrimage and are free to exit the city over previously walked ground. Or at least, I would assume so.
I'd love to live there, I have them owe me 8 silver by doing the path he said, then I'd walk back to the entrance and owe an ASTOUNDING 0 silver, then I'd repeat over and over and I'd be rich in no time!
But, since I ain't no Pilgrim, I'd just walk around the block bottom right of the welcoming center six times, walk to the left (to where I'd have my house) and have the city owe me 20 silver, walk up, and repeat!
You can actually gain some silver by the time you reach the temple if instead of continuing downwards from the centermost intersection, you took a detour left 1 block, down 1 block, and continued along the path to the right 1 block. Your money would change over this path to these numbers: 4, 8, 16, 14, 28, 30, 32, 34, 17, 8.5, 4.25, 2.25, 4.5, 2.5, 0.5, -1.5, -3, -6, -12, -10, -8, -6, -4, leaving you with 4 silver owed to you by the end of the trip.
There is a way to end at 0 without owing decimal numbers (etc 2.5) on the way. Down - down - down Right - right Up - up Left - left - left - left Down Right Down Right Down Right - Right
I would reckon that most of these riddles were made where the question was already known as well as the answer, and then it was wrapped up into a "scenario" as shown here so it could be nicely animated. So in that sense they could all be considered "contrived", unless they found a riddle and took it as is.

If you don’t understand 3:02 , (n x 2) + 2 over two is same as n x 2 over two plus two over two, or n over 1 (or n) + 1 x 2-2 ,1 and 2 cancel out and 2 becomes 1 , so we simplified it to n - 1
I can find better anwser. From the start(4): Go 2 left(0), 1 down(0), 4 right(8), 2 up(2), 1 left(0), 1 down(0), 2 left(-4), 3 down(-32) and finaly 3 left(-26). So, goverment have to give us 26 coins.
Being clever, the pilgrim realises they can make a lot of money out of this tax if they move the correct way after entering the city. They send a message to a pilgrim friend, together with a path to follow to maximize the gains. What is the most optimal way to travel from the entrance to the temple, and what does the city owe you afterwards? The best I have is 78, can you do better?
I interpreted this riddle differently but still solved it. I was under the impression that the pilgrim had to pass through the temple while still obeying the same movement rules and at the same time having to get back to the gate at the end. My solution was go down two blocks increasing the total to 16, then go left two blocks to drop the total to 12. Going down twice again brings the total to 48. Move right all four blocks to bring the total to 56. now move up three blocks bringing the total to 28, 14, and then 7. moving left all four blocks brings the total to -1 then go to the gate, the city owes you half a coin.
Seems easy enough, though I must say, a city containing a major pilgrimage site putting this much strain on not just everyday travelers but also _the pilgrims,_ many of whom have apparently sworn vows of poverty or otherwise pack very light to avoid tempting bandits, would seem to be risking some serious international outrage.

Interesting. I found a more complicated alternative solution in which you go a bit more West before doing looping around. Still was able to cut enough corners that it ended with 0. I could’ve even ended with a profit at the temple if it wasn’t against the rules.
Check : Start with 0 silver Option 1 - 2 Left + 2 Down + 2 Right + 2 Down + 2 Right = - 4 Silver. Option 2 - 2 Left + 4 Down + 4 Right = - 8 Silver. Isn't this better options? You can get 4 or 8 silver with free visit too.

You can actually gain some silver by the time you reach the temple if instead of continuing downwards from the centermost intersection, you took a detour left 1 block, down 1 block, and continued along the path to the right 1 block.
Your money would change over this path to these numbers: 4, 8, 16, 14, 28, 30, 32, 34, 17, 8.5, 4.25, 2.25, 4.5, 2.5, 0.5, -1.5, -3, -6, -12, -10, -8, -6, -4, leaving you with 4 silver owed to you by the end of the trip.

Conspiracy theory: Justin Y. is a group tasked to conquer every UA-cam comment section before UA-cam's impending apocalypse.
This one is so contrived, I kind of feel like it took more work to come up with the question than to figure out the solution.
I would reckon that most of these riddles were made where the question was already known as well as the answer, and then it was wrapped up into a "scenario" as shown here so it could be nicely animated.
So in that sense they could all be considered "contrived", unless they found a riddle and took it as is.
Usually it's harder to make these than solve these.

Actually, most if not all of those are based on ancient riddles and enigmas, this one, for example, is based on the ant perimeter thought experiment.

If you don’t understand 3:02 , (n x 2) + 2 over two is same as n x 2 over two plus two over two, or n over 1 (or n) + 1 x 2-2 ,1 and 2 cancel out and 2 becomes 1 , so we simplified it to n - 1

Go 2 left(0), 1 down(0), 4 right(8), 2 up(2), 1 left(0), 1 down(0), 2 left(-4), 3 down(-32) and finaly 3 left(-26). So, goverment have to give us 26 coins.

Being clever, the pilgrim realises they can make a lot of money out of this tax if they move the correct way after entering the city. They send a message to a pilgrim friend, together with a path to follow to maximize the gains. What is the most optimal way to travel from the entrance to the temple, and what does the city owe you afterwards?

I interpreted this riddle differently but still solved it. I was under the impression that the pilgrim had to pass through the temple while still obeying the same movement rules and at the same time having to get back to the gate at the end.
My solution was go down two blocks increasing the total to 16, then go left two blocks to drop the total to 12. Going down twice again brings the total to 48. Move right all four blocks to bring the total to 56. now move up three blocks bringing the total to 28, 14, and then 7. moving left all four blocks brings the total to -1 then go to the gate, the city owes you half a coin.
Yeah I thought the additional problem was to "also leave Duonia."

Seems easy enough, though I must say, a city containing a major pilgrimage site putting this much strain on not just everyday travelers but also _the pilgrims,_ many of whom have apparently sworn vows of poverty or otherwise pack very light to avoid tempting bandits, would seem to be risking some serious international outrage.

Interesting. I found a more complicated alternative solution in which you go a bit more West before doing looping around. Still was able to cut enough corners that it ended with 0. I could’ve even ended with a profit at the temple if it wasn’t against the rules.

Solution:
Since the tax only takes effect when you reach your destination, you just need to “stop by” the temple, before leaving the town, boom.
Check :
Start with 0 silver
Option 1 - 2 Left + 2 Down + 2 Right + 2 Down + 2 Right = - 4 Silver.
Option 2 - 2 Left + 4 Down + 4 Right = - 8 Silver.
Isn't this better options? You can get 4 or 8 silver with free visit too.
