  • Yes, we really did build our own house. We were in our mid twenties at the time and had a toddler and a baby. We had no construction experience or training. We took the time to research and plan the build process for an entire year before we started. We couldn't fine anyone to build our dream farmhouse so we decided to try building it. It was hard but it was worth it! The sacrifices to make this happen were huge, but the outcome is beyond amazing. Honestly, if we can do it, anyone can do it. That's the honest truth. If you can make the necessary sacrifices, save your money, have a good work ethic, and work every second that you're awake, it can be done. Happy homesteading!

We are actually in the process of building our home and my husband, me and our three children (ages 12,14,15) are doing like 95% of the work ourselves. It’s taken us over a year now but that’s because we both work and paying for everything as we go but hopefully next year we will be moved in.

Some people are natural "makers". Maker has many description, one of which is engineer. James is an engineer. You don't get a degree for the aptitude, you're just born with it. Then, the object is to gain knowledge (degrees, certification, internet research are all equivalent) to satisfy the craving of a need to create/make whatever you need. You look at something and think: "I can make/fix that, and this is how I'm going to do it". I used to write computer programs, retired, and now I do a lot of 3D printing to provide that maker outlet.
    Thanks for posting. 😀❤👍

Our new home , we asked our contractor ( he had the home finished outside and windows and doors.
the inside of home wasn't done , so he said , yes we could finished the inside of home completely , and we had
3 months to finish it up. So we started doing the inside. My responsibilities was to pick out a lot of things, inclding wiring , electric box, etcc , we had to get different wiring down. The only person who were here daily ,
was our brother in law, he was going to school for AC and Heating . My spouse worked full time.
I ordered kitchen cabinets, flooring , lighting , doors, ( drywall was done ) , trim, ,etccc .
I knew how to do flooring , tiling , etc. Anyways it was done in 3 months and I had fun doing it .
We even finished our basement , made a family room , kitchenette, bathroom , bedroom , storage , walkout basement ,etc . I know my spouse capable of building a home , because our first home , we did major work
on it like adding a family room , two car garage , etcccc . We remodeled our first home , in every room and like I said added more rooms.

Great accomplishment for the both of you and kudos to family helping out. My wife and I escaped to Tennessee from Massachusetts in November of 2021. We finally started building in September of '22 with the help of our neighbors. We too subcontracted out excavation, block, cement and framing and we have done everything else to date. We are hoping to be in by April but still have a ways to go before finished. Love how ya'll try to encourage people they to can do it.

There's a design for a chicken house that you might find interesting. The key is spacing of slats of the walls. They are spaced so that fresh air is always allowed but doesn't let wind blow through. It allows chicken droppings to compost but there is no odor.

What lender allowed you to do your own work? Everyone I call will not allow us to do anything on our own and must hire it all out.
