New electric cars are being launched of the time, but ones of the hot hatch variety are in short supply. Sure, there's the Cupra Born and, of course, MG and Hyundai have all launched their own performance hatchbacks very recently.
But these - the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N in particular - are all rather large.
Where are the dinky little pocket rockets?
Abarth thinks it has the answer with this - the 500e.
It has 152hp and 235Nm of torque so it's promising on paper. But there's also the question of its rather controversial artificial engine noise.
Is it a proper hot hatch? I find out.

I'm amazed that, somehow, you managed to find trousers louder than that paint! Personally, I think the 'noise generator' is just that, noise for the sake of it. I can't imagine any 'true' petrol-head seeing it as a worthwhile replacement for the sound and vibration of an actual engine. A great review though, fun and entertaining; well shot and edited 🤩

A great review as always👍 Reminds me of when I was a child and as a proud pedal car owner I would have loved one with a battery that had flashing lights, a horn and yes makes engine noises... broom broom 🚗💨. Alas I couldn't afford one of them and it appears I still can't at £38000 😮. Personally feel this is just a gimmick and a poorly executed expensive one at that. Just one question, are they available in any other colour than Hi Vis yellow? We've all made silly decisions in our lives but there's no need to let the whole world know about it, even when it's pitch black people will know 🫣

It comes back on - and you can’t switch it off while you’re moving

I wish they would just stop trying to make electric cars that try to mimic ice cars, if its electric embrace the things that make it good, don't add fake engine noise etc. Electric cars have instant torque so traction control is so easy to implement, dual and quad motor electric cars can have torque vectoring
I kind of like this car, they have tried to inject personality and have succeeded in a way. I was trying to guess where you were driving through, it looked like broadway Cotswolds.

If you will use a bigger and powerful engine you will need a bigger battery, something you can no have on a small car.
I hope your accountant lets you put all these trousers through as business expenses

This looks like the death of Abarth. I think you will see this in the future as a Fiat 500 Ex without the phoney niose generator. The Fiat 500E is already a rip off but this is just price gouging.
Your pants are the only cool thing here. The 500e is just ridiculous (optically, technically and pricewise) ... and a disgrace to the name Abarth.
