It is wake up call for Canadian government to build own infrastructure and provide jobs to Canadian people. Economically, it will be hard for Canadians for next a few years, but refineries , gas plants and lumber industries etc will be created, it will be good for future generations. Thank you so much for explaining tariff issue.

Canada has 40 million people around 70+ thousand are enlisted in the armed forces. Many countries have mandatory service for men and some include women, it is practiced in many democratic countries. More than that, it's a wakeup call to divest from America. America is a sinking ship; it's time to bail out and deal directly with Mexico, China, etc. We should now be treating the Trump administration and its threats on the Canadian economy as a national security threat.

Canada wouldn’t be in this dire economic situation if it didn’t have destructive interprovincial trade barriers, that act like a 21% tariff on internal trade [IMF figure]. They impede the flow of goods and services between provinces, raise prices and reduce productivity and overall economic growth. Moreover, experts estimate that eliminating these barriers could boost Canada's GDP by up to $200 billion annually, and MORE than offset the damage expected from Trump's threatened tariffs. The Business Council of Alberta stated “One of the profound ironies of Canada’s focus on foreign trade is that, in many cases, it is actually easier for Canadian companies to do business across international borders than it is within our own country.”
These self-imposed tariffs MUST be eliminated!! How can we complain about Trump’s tariff threats when we tariff ourselves??! Email or otherwise contact your Premier and/or MPP and DEMAND these barriers be eliminated.

One thing you missed about the oil Nav is that the USA refineries are set up to refine heavy crude only. The sweet crude that the US is pumping is sold on the free market at market prices. Canadian oil is bought by the USA at a 20% lower cost than the oil they sell.
Since the refineries are only able to accept heavy crude to make gasoline, diesel jet fuels etc.. the USA would have to find another source for this heavy crude oil. They have their choice of Venezuela, Iran, or Saudi Arabia. The pipelines are already in place to supply Canadian crude to the refineries but the other oils would have to be shipped adding to cost, and the other countries are in OPEC and wont sell for the same price as Canada.
The US is stuck with our oil because refurbishing the refineries would take several years (Trump will be out of the Whitehouse then) and hundreds of billions of dollars. Why would you want to lose this partnership.
    1. The US pays less than market value for the oil.
    2. The infrastructure is already in place.
    3. The refineries need to have heavy crude as their base oil to process.
    4. Charging a tariff of 25% will make the price of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel much more expensive to the American public. This would be a promise broken by the President.
    5. The American people can import oil from the OPEC countries at a higher cost resulting in a much higher price for fuels, they can buy it from Canada with a tariff resulting in a much higher cost of fuel, or they can just let things work as they have for the past 50 yrs.
Seems like a No Brainer for me Nav.

    • @ramastarchild6804
      @ramastarchild6804 10 днів тому +1

The US has its own oil it can sent to the refineries now that Trump has reopened the Federal waters to pumping again. The American oil isn't as difficult to refine. Changing from Heavy Crude to a lighter crude is more about process then equipment. It is just quicker and cheaper. Bottom line, the US does NOT need Canada's oil. The worse that will happen is a 3 or 4 day spike in gas prices in the mid-west US, during the conversion. Trump may have planned for even this. The US has a large oil reserve. You need to find another customer for you crude; keep in mind you may have to refine it yourself before you sell it. Most of your pipelines go to and thru the USA, and the US controls two of the locks on the St Lawrence River. No sure how you will move it if Trump is an ass about it. Where the hell was your government and business leadership to allow this to happen? Dude, this is like the first day of business school stuff. You can't blame America when your government is AWOL. Good Luck! Bon Chance!

Canada seems to be very reactive in its approach and needs to adopt a more proactive mindset. Its current attitude resembles that of a passive bystander. Reopening trade talks with China and India could open new avenues for growth, and exploring markets in the EU and Asia could bring significant opportunities. With careful strategy, Canada could even strengthen ties in the Middle East. However, it appears overly reliant on the comfort zone shaped by previous leaders and its close alignment with the US, which hinders meaningful policy shifts.

It is through their ineptitude and poor business accumen that we find ourselves with one major customer for our products. A business person with the minimum of common businee sense diversifies his customer base. A one customer business is completely at the mercy of that customer and it is eventualy the customer who owns the company, not in name but in reality. The time is ripe and the door has been opened by the likes of Trumpf to move on. The U.S.A. is a land of vipers who have but two goals POWER and MONEY. US built the Panama Canal and Canada built the Welland Canal. Check Mate.

@@Leceister4231 Canada mostly sells cheap raw resources, energy and agriculture to USA. Tariffs make USA food prices go up for families, USA manufacturers will pay more for energy and materials. USA manufacturers hire American workers to do good value added jobs, So taxing imports for manufacturers, cause the final product price to increase. That makes them more expensive for American consumers and exports. Buying lots of cheap Canadian materials, paying good wages to American workers to add value, manufacturer vehicles, machinery, farm equipment, etc and keeping those products competitive for WORLD export profit is a win win. USA refineries need to produce gasoline, image what 25% will do to your fuel pump prices. If trump breaks the trade deal he negotiated last time he was in power. Canada will be able to fill our new pipeline to the pacific ocean and sell that oil to ASIA, for a better price. What will happen if your refineries suddenly lose 20% of the oil they need. The drill baby drill oil in the states don't match the type of oil your refineries need, and no one wants to spend the $billions and years of downtime to refit them. trump is now threatening the EU to buy more American oil because your oil is no good to you! Imagine if a store you shop at suddenly starts threatening you, would you keep dealing with them or find a new friend to deal with? USA buys 40$B of agricultural products from Canada. You must need them for something @ your food stores and trump wants to add 25% cost to them for himself. Sorry you Elected a con man that has a record of bankrupting Casinos.

Ppl talk about the run. What about the long run. If we take the hit for now and build up our economy to not need the export to the US. And in turn the price is dropped for our fellow Canadians so they can re invest and buy from the Canadian market. Canadians are already paying higher prices compared to Americans in all consumer products. The lower prices will drive Canadians to buy more. Which may keep production higher after things settle…I want the long run details….. short run is always shortsighted.

We sell mainly bulk resources with limited "finished goods"....where would the market be that would pay a premium for Canadian resources when they can source them closer from Russia or China? (remember the war in Ukraine is of limited duration now, and Russia will be hungry to recover market share, and China will be reluctant to give up any.)

History (His-story) is written by the Conqueror.
Man's greatest enemy is himself. Greed is an animal. Greed is a major driving force behind Colonization, Genocide, Slavery, Colonialism, Imperialism, War which are all evil things done and benefited by evildoers.
Greed is behind everything that is bad.. Those with no remorse or empathy for others who are greedy are the most cunning. They leave trails of debris, through Genocide, Slavery, Colonialism, Colonization, Imperialism & War., no matter where they go.. Whenever they left, they left it in strategic violence and tension. It's such an evil world we live in.
In the case of Native Americans; centuries long systematic effort to keep them weak with a relatively small, marginalized & disenfranchised population, so that they would never be able to reclaim their vast bountiful motherland, ever again.
In other words, all it takes is to create an artificial environment where Native people of the Colonized land remain poor, weak, powerless and their population at the bare minimum.. The sad truth is the fact that the plight of indigenous Native Americans are the most marginalized and forgotten case in history.
The fact that they need to repent and repay their sins and crimes.. After all, it's "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" thing.. Repay and repent for your long overdue crimes and sins. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. 🙁

From an economics perspective, bread and crude oil have a low price elasticity of demand (i.e., the quantity demanded is less sensitive to price changes) so the proposed tariffs are likely to hurt the US more because they can be passed down to consumers who end up paying a higher cost --> inflation (esp because of oil price impact on downstream sectors). I think energy will be exempted from tariffs. They will be applied selectively on goods and Canada will have to respond accordingly. I agree that Trump is probably posturing to gain leverage in trade talks.
PS: I feel the AI-generated images in the presentation are too many and too dramatic.

The United States has a trade deficit of $53.5 billion with Canada, with total bilateral trade amounting to approximately $908.9 billion. That deficit is almost entirely oil that is sold below market value which the US refines into higher value and resells. This is an exchange of goods and services that is mutually beneficial, supporting industries and jobs in both countries, and is modest compared to the U.S. trade deficits with other nations, such as the $367.4 billion deficit with China. This trade relationship is not a subsidy, as Trump says, but a reciprocal exchange of goods and services that enhances the economic prosperity of both nations.

I think Trump is talking about the billions it cost the USA to protect Canada, and he thinks we should pay for that. He has a fair argument,
if you claim to be a sovereign country , then be it , and protect yourself . Otherwise you are owned, this is his pragmatic business analysis.
Canada must provide concessions that will balance the economic imbalance. It would simply be best to pay up and agree on the least painful terms.

I don’t see how the US could afford to put these tariffs on Canada either. But I believe Trump’s ask is real. Canada needs to fix their immigration issues - stopping asylum seekers from coming in; going back to a merit based immigration system; reducing the number of immigrants to match recourses and infrastructure available; and they need to fix their boarder issues - stopping the flow of fentanyl into both our country and into the US.
I believe we’re in this situation due to the liberals and Trudeau’s failed policies. The sooner we can get Pierre into office, the better!

It is truly disheartening to see Canada face such a setback from the United States, a nation we have long regarded as an elder brother. This serves as a valuable lesson: relying too heavily on any single entity, much like staying too long under parental support, can ultimately hinder one’s ability to build self-reliance and explore broader opportunities.
This is a wake-up call for all Canadians to unite and actively seek partnerships with countries that are open to doing business with Canada, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or sociocultural and political differences. Together, we can diversify our relationships and create a stronger, more resilient future.

My suggestion to Canadians is to elect a Prime Minister who can offer to collaborate with Trump. By getting rid of the Canadian currency and adopting the U.S. dollar in exchange for free trade, Canadians will gradually realize they are becoming American. Slowly, we could transition away from socialist healthcare and adopt private health services.
Let's not talk about healthcare now because Canadians know how to exploit the system. Many of us own homes in Florida, and when we get sick, we return to Canada for operations; we are living in an illusion. In Asia, countries like Russia, India, China, and Iran are forming a united BRIC currency to devalue the U.S. dollar.
We must stop this foolishness in Canada. Mass immigration has led to our current challenges; look at where we are today-a nation struggling to find jobs while taxes remain excessive. Many states in the U.S. have no income tax, and mortgage terms are far more favorable there, unlike the frequent five-year renewals here. Canadian banks often charge high-interest rates, and house prices in Canada are outrageous.
Even though we have our own timber, we still prefer to export it to Americans. Canadians often don’t support each other; instead, we seek American consumer capitalism and money. Ultimately, we are a failed nation.

Take out cheap Canadian energy and Canada is at a huge trade deficit to what we import from the USA, so they are already winning. As Canada is largely a resource exporter to the USA, you may want to consider it as a wholesaler. So if you put a 25% tariff/surcharge payable by the purchaser to the american IRA, the American restaurant, consumer, manufacturer/employer, etc costs go up so product they sell goes up and they get less competitive on the world markets. In other words if they continue trade deficits with Canada of cheap energy and raw materials, it still benefits the USA consumer and manufacturers/workers compete with value added exports to the rest of the world.

It's a good point that, if Trump is here for only four years, he may not want to press hard on Canada if he has other competing priorities that would be impeded if it disrupts supply chains too aggressively.
Eg he imposes tariffs now, they have a knock on effect. As we saw from COVID and from GFC, disruptions correct up and then down and tend to last for years. A year and a bit from now mid terms will be in view.
The other thing to keep in mind is that he is heavily involved in policy, and if he has only just started, he will necessarily face divided attention. He will have to pick his focus, or will lose coherence.
I think everyone is hoping as he adds more and more policy changes with the inevitable frictions that change brings, he has to drop some agenda items. Canada and Mexico should hope he becomes convinced there isn't really much in a trade war when he has other more urgent problems with better payback

What Canadian in their right mind would want any of that?

We still have oil refineries here in Canada, why do people think we don’t have refineries here we do, and we have more oil then those refineries can refine, so selling some of that oil to other countries makes since, where i live, the oil ships are constantly coming to put up oil from the refinery and ship it world wide, there is even a rumour that Germany maybe interest in purchasing oil from us, because of the shortage they are running into because of war between Russia and Ukraine.

I think the new PM would negotiate not retaliate. I hope that’s what they choose.
And if they successfully negotiate, there will be no impact on the housing market.
I guess we will know that very very soon.

No one is talking about how fragile the US economy is. January 27th is just an example of how innovation can disrupt and shed trillion dollars worth of tech stock in a day with a single innovation from China. China just demonstrated how innovation is key and a tariffs just restrict and obliterate innovation. The west should be focused on innovating and not restricting trade. I anxiously await the other innovations China has in their back pocket that will disrupt the west's false sense of security that we are the world's innovation hub.

Canada and Mexico can stand strong or stand STUPID! What Trump wants is for
the entire North American Continent to have free trade, open borders and
equal property rights across the continent. Together, the three nations could
enjoy a common defense and live in peace and prosperity like no other people
on earth. The three nations are blessed with wonderful people, infrastructure,
logistical systems, technology, energy, water and agriculture like no other
continent on earth. Why can't the three biggest trading partners who are
neighbors get along and just do without the rest of the world's problems.

Very concise . You laid that out in a very factual way. If this moves ahead in this most dreaded manner.
We will struggle but we will survive. As you pointed out we are resource rich. We would likely have to start
selling resources to Europe to cover the cost of large unemployment numbers. Trump is going to ruin the
American economy. We need to diversify our exports. This might be a really good thing in the long run.
