Hi Grace, never heard of this Movie before today but looked up the Actors to see who is in it. They are all of Asian decent. No white washing here. I actually enjoyed seeing that.
Wow I'm suprised this is a Netflix movie! This is theater worthy entertainment and I love that there are K-Pop influences in the songs. I think this looks like a must see!

Hi Grace! I’m a 3D animator in the industry and we still very much take video references to figure out our story poses and timing. You can search Shot Breakdown from animators from big companies and still see the whole process. In the bigger feature film companies, they might ask you to sketch out ideas if the storyboard is open to interpretation or unclear. Not everyone does video references as it depends on personal work process or the style of the show.
At first I watched this because of Phillipa Soo and then full on cried watching this movie! I cried even more after I read that the writer, Audrey Wells, wrote this movie knowing that she wouldn’t live to see it. Wells was diagnosed with cancer and wrote the movie to help her daughter and husband cope with her death!
Pretty sure that's Chang'e, the Chinese moon goddess, who is very popular myth. I doubt they'll make her a villain, especially if they want to appeal to Chinese audiences.

That's how predictable western stories have become. Good thing this isn't a western story Also I think they are going to go Pixar/Disney way, where there is no actual villain but instead there are all this tasks/challenges to overcome
I don’t understand the release schedule. The mid autumn festival (the folklore this is alluding to) is next week, but the movie won’t be out nearly a full month after that... feels like a missed opportunity.
Netflex is getting so good at making animated stuff these days, they've become a power house at collecting great animation for their service! And I watch anything from this legend! But yeah, as you said animators don't get famous like they use to. There's some new famed SHOW RUNNERS but for movies it's basically directors and VO artist.
Well with Computer Animation at least at Disney and Pixar, you have the supervising animator who Animates and oversees the animation of a specific character, and then the actual grunt work of animating that character is divided between all the other animators and the supervising animator themselves.
I'm confused about the integration of the music. The songs sound like the lead character is singing them and they are from her point of view , but they don't show her singing the songs for some insane reason. If the lead sings multiple songs in the movie, the final trailer should show that.

Pearl Studios made Abominable! My favourite animated movie of 2019. So I am excited for this one. This studio could be the perfect way to introduce chinese-based movies in Hollywood.

I love the animated Mulan...it has one of the most beautiful and sophisticated scores of all the Disney renaissance movies. And they BLEW IT!!!! I was so pissed when they originally announced that there would be no singing. Nobody wanted THIS Mulan film....but they shoved it down our throats anyway. And then they wonder why it didn't do well 🤔

I grew up with this Chinese folklore, so I was disappointed to see them transform Chang'e into an ABG / kpop-like character. It looks cheesy and a lot like Home, so I hope Glen Keane's end product is more meaningful and impactful.
I am sure the Chinese will accept this better than Mulan did. They are playing with a myth here, not an actual war hero. That decision alone already help them a lot. Myth are easier to work on. Chinese have done their own version of their fables and myths, Nezha being the last one released last year. We have dozens of version of White Snake Lady and Journey To The West as well, for example. From the look of it, this Netflix movie are likely to revolve around the Mid-Autum Festival, where moon cake is served and eaten, as well as the legends about Moon Goddess, Chang'ē, and her husband, Houyi, albeit, doubtlessly, altered ones.
