100% agree regarding Orlok's presence. I already had an idea of what it was going to look like, but I wasn't quite prepared for how underwhelming and unfrightening he was. And by the end of the film it never grew on me. Eggers sacrificed emotional impact for historical accuracy with this character design. As a huge fan of Eggers and his other films, this one was very disappointing.
Right?! Toward the end I was more annoyed than frightened with Orlok. The look, the voice just did not work. I made a separate video on just the look if you're interested (I swear I am not saying it to just get a click) in which I share more info on why he took this route. Apparently he wanted Orlok to look like an animated corpse which just is so confusing and underwhelming as a choice for the creature IMO
I regret not watching in IMAX. Loved every moment of it and man Lilly R Depp's performance is mind blowing. Aaron Taylor's performance was the weakest.
I think Eggers gave him this look because the original Murnau version (as much as I ADORE it), shows Thomas getting inside a castle with this guy who is not only a creep, he’s a straight up monster and makes it a bit unbelievable. I think they wanted to go for a more believable look and then build up the creepiness with the superb performance (once again) of Bill Skarsgård.
I appreciate the different path he took and didn't just copy paste the 1922 look. I just hoped it would be a better look and give us that scary movie monster feel
@ yeah, I also thought it wasn’t scary at all. When that dude with a moustache showed up I was like : WHAT THE F?. But Bill is spot on as usual and Eggers is a terrific director.
I've watched thousands of horror and horror films, and Robert Eggers' Nosferatu I can guarantee and swear, for the atmosphere of death, rot, eroticism, bloodthirstiness, Absolutely epic, scary, Great Work Magnanimous rare jewelry worthy of countless Oscar statuettes. Period and I have said yes...
Apparently, Robert Eggers went to quite some effort to research how Romanian noblemen of the Middle Ages would generally look. I agree that the look for Orlok is quite different to how he was depicted in previous Nosferatu movies, but I also deeply respect the route Eggers took for this movie.
I thought i wasn't gonna like that its way too similar to Dracula, but i did it worked very well i used to think bram stokers Dracula was the king of vampires, but i might have a change of heart
The storyline was non-existent in this film. Not a single fight with Orlok. Orlok just forgot what time of day it was and died? It was already foretold in the book they found at the realtor's office. Ellen was lonely but had a family and summoned a saviour awakening Orlok? No story about any of that which is the whole point of this movie, Orlok and Ellen. It's not about Ellen and Thomas or their love. It does nothing. I was completely puzzled by the storyline of this film.
Nosferatu is a weaker story than Dracula because of stuff like this. Dracula ends with an actual fight and the original Nosferatu filmmakers had to legally do things to separate it from Dracula, the ending was one of them. Unfortunately what you saw in the movie is how the original ends too. The intended moral was to show the power of evil and the sacrifice needed to vanquish it. Dracula definitely ends much better than Nosferatu.
@@nerdmasala appreciate the reply! Did you get why Ellen summoned a saviour? Her family was still alive. She mentions her dad finding her in a field as a child. Her family dies after Orlok is awakened. I'm guessing by him. Your point about the ending makes sense but why no story for Ellen and Orlok's origin? Beautiful film but did not leave me with a profound message or feeling at all. And when you don't get that and there is no real story to be told, what is there then?
@@bryandavismoviefan My pleasure! She was craving tenderness (19th century speak for physical intimacy), so she summoned a savior, hoping it would be an angel, but instead it was Nosferatu. AFAIK her family's death is not connected to Orlok but her loneliness after their passing leads to her calling to him. Ellen's origin is the first scene, and Nosferatu's origin is shrouded in mystery on purpose to make the character more interesting. The themes are subtle like all Eggers' movies and the big takeaway is supposed to be good v evil, but it is not as easy to take that away when it ends the way it ended...
@nerdmasala you've just earned a subscriber and supporter. Well done. I'll have to think on this after your points. I guess I underestimated the level of familiarity with past Nosferatu films/stories needed to appreciate Eggers film. I guess I am surprised by it's glowing reviews by so many. Perhaps that is what set me up for a letdown. Thank you again for your time and response. Appreciate it a lot!
@@bryandavismoviefan You're too kind! But you're not required to know all the history of a movie's source material before you watch it, it is supposed to familiarize you with everything on its own. Film could have done a better job spending time with this instead of the unnecessary Aaron Taylor Johnson story
I don’t think they’re is a wrong or right way to enjoy a movie 🎥 it’s your prospective, some will feel like you and like it but somethings may not work for you and others will have the prospective of I loved it, it hit all the elements I was hoping and looking for. Nothing wrong with either, movies like music hit us all differently and that is why the art of it makes an impact on us as individuals! I’m super excited to be going to see this and I respect your opinion, have a great day!

I have been a vampire fan since the 3rd grade. I am 73. I loved this movie!!!!!
Wow!
9/10 imo. Just watched it, and it was awesome. His look was incredible, and the scares and jumpscares were great
Glad you liked it that much!
It was damn near perfect, the design for count orlock definitely was not what I expected but in the best of ways
I regret not watching in IMAX. Loved every moment of it and man Lilly R Depp's performance is mind blowing. Aaron Taylor's performance was the weakest.
@man-alive-v7r agreeeed
@man-alive-v7r A-Tay was pretty good imo
Orlok is about as scary as Burt Reynolds in Smokey. and the bandit, lmao!

It is tough to 10/10 a movie when the creature that has the name of the horror movie is not scary

Glad you enjoyed it that much! I wish I liked it as much as I did The Witch
Just watched and will watch it again in theaters before it's gone. Such a beautiful, scary, emotional, intense movie. 10/10 coming from a horror fan
Nice! Definitely worth a rewatch

I definitely respect his and his team's effort. I also hope more movies will take his lead and keep character looks secret!

Glad you loved it so much!
Watching it tomorrow. Can’t wait. It’s my most hyped movie if the year
You will have a blast!
Fr fr Robert Eggers and crew depicted vampires in the most grounded and realistic way
I agree with being underwhelmed with orlocks design, but it grew on me for sure
Glad you liked it!

A lot of people in the audience chuckled when he blew his load and died. A s*M.P. Vampyre.....sigh a sign of the times.
That ending is faithful to the original movie but it was SO. WEIRD.

Absolutely! Couldn't agree more. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much
@ Thank you!
I agree that orlocks look didn't quite have the punch it needed and the heavy breathing was also unnecessary, but still a great movie.
Count Orlock is way more terrifying than Dracula
Agree to disagree but to each their own!
Orlok looked great. Your opinion is off
To each their own! Glad you liked it
