  • The history of Malayalam film lyric writing begins from Muthukulam Raghavan Pillai.
He is also the first dialogue writer in Malayalam cinema. That movie was *Balan*, the first Malayalam sound film.
Muthukulam wrote the script and dialogue for Balan based on Sundaran Pillai's ( a native of Nagercoil) short story *Vidhiyum Mrs Nairum*.
In the early days of Malayalam cinema, lyric writing was for the actors themselves who sing ( "Munnani pattukaar").
The first playback song was in 1984 with the film Nirmala.
    T. K. Govinda Rao from Cochin was the first playback singer. Music composed by P. S. Divakaran and E. I. Warrier.
The song was written by... the great poet G. Shankarakurup!!!
    Tirunainar Kurichi, Abhaydev,
Thikurissi and others were the earliest song writers in Malayalam cinema.
Later came the legends like P. Bhaskaran, Devarajan, Sreekumaran Thambi, ONV...!
Later, our film music industry has flourished with so many talented lyricists.
But a name stands out without any mention in this regard.
    Jnanpeeth MT Vasudevan Nair .
    Malayali's favorite M.T.
He has written songs for one film, only one and it was Hariharan's *Valarthu mrugangal*.
Yusuf Ali Kecheri was commissioned to write the lyrics for the film. But he soon had some health issues. Suddenly it became difficult to find another competent person.
Hariharan approached M.T, the script writer of the film and shared his crisis.
He requested M.T. to give it a try. At first he refused but finally he agreed to write the song.
He wrote four songs for the film *Valarthumrugangal*. _Karmathin paathakal veedhikal_...., _Shubharaathri_..., _Kakkalan Kaliyachan_...., _Orumuri kannadiyil_....
    MB Srinivasan did the music.
Dasettan and Janakiamma had were fortunate to sing the songs penned by M.T.
Our Malayalam film song industry owes to Hariharan, the untainted and brilliant director who turned the great storyteller Shri. M.T. Vasudevan Nair into a poet atleast for a while.
