Evelyn Ashford made her fourth Olympic Team - simply sensational.
It was actually her fifth but given the 80 Olympics was boycotted in Moscow..
She qualified for 5 Olympic teams including 1980 Moscow
I remember this. I was just so happy Evelyn made the team.

I love how she acknowledged that Merlene was her biggest rival. Merlene is a great sprinter probably the best in history BUT to be a champion, you have to know how to manage the rounds at the Olympics and World Championships and put nerves aside. Merlene easily beat her rivals pre-Worlds/Olympics and post-World/Olympics but always falls short on the big stages.
@Anthony Mcken Because the other sprinters were indeed juiced up like Flo Jo, or Devers... and so on. Probably, Gwen and Marlene were clean sprinters and that is why they lost to cheaters in 88, 92, 96, and 2000 (jones).
@Anthony Mcken I understand you. Not everybody likes Gwen Torrence... But retrospectively, Gwen Torrence, Marlene Ottey and Irina Privalova have had great and clean careers. Yes, Gwen was harsh in her words, but she was very open and honest... she said what she thought without hiding or having second thoughts. For that we should be grateful for Gwen Torrence!

Devers was the 2nd from Torrence at 1992 & 1996 Olympic Trials but we know that Devers got the gold medals for 1992 & 1996 Olympics.
Torrence was the more complete sprinter though. She just blew it both times

Huh? Torrence was literally hurt after dusting Gail in 1996 US finals . She couldn’t recover fast enough to get gold. That’s totally different from Graves’ disease issue

I love her name gwen Torrence.
No doubt Gwen Torrence is one of the best sprinters in history. It is very unfortunate that her rivals in 88, 92 and 96 Olympics were a head of her because they cheated! Gwen is my all time favorite female sprinter together with Merlene Ottey of Jamaica!
Gwen was never going to win in 88. In a field with FloJo and Evelyn she was at best 3rd or 4th fastest. In 92 and 96 with the legends retired she choked both times to a hurdler (Gail Devers). In the spirit of the poor loser we knew Gwen to be everybody she lost to was on drugs. Hardly someone that can be considered great with those pedestrian times.
@@mikehowza Gwen choked in 92 but was injured in 96. Had she been healthy she probably wins 4 golds in 96- 100, 200, 4 x 100 relay, and 4 x 400 relay (which she had to WD from due to her injury).

I think Gwen won the 100 in the world championship and got DQ in the 200 for stepping out of her lane. Gail 2 olympics straight won the 100. At the 96 trials Gail was hurt but she smoked Gwen again in the finals.

She may've won the 200 in Barcelona but my first memory of Torrence at those Olympics was her slanderous accusations against two of the medallists in the 100 and the IAAF threatening to suspend her if she didn't retract her comments. After that I couldn't stand her at all.

Who cares what she said? I'd be mad too if I was cheated out of wins by cheaters. I loved some Marion Jones, but she broke my heart with what she did.

Juliet Cuthbert - who finished second and up until that point was acquaintances and possibly friends with Gwen - told the media that Gwen told her privately that she believed that Devers and Privalova were on PEDs. After that, all hell broke loose.

@@kameroncoleman9293 Cuthbert was upset too because the papers ran with the initial quotes and rumors began swirling about her possibly taking PEDs. I recall her mom called her up and confronted her and so she was pissed at Gwen and called her a b*tch, etc. A lot of her contemporaries like Cuthbert, Onyali hated her after that. Gwen then had a falling out with Ottey in 1995.
