    Ha, that thumbnail 😅. Impressive growth, that's a healthy tree.

      😂 thank you 🙏🏽. Not bad for a second flush of growth after the spring pruning. I cut back everything except the thread grafts…little tree was like. “No thanks, I’m exploding everywhere!”
      I really can’t overstate how awesome the oversized pot and open soil mix works for blowing up a tree.
      Another example around the garden, I planted a few collected JM seedlings around the edges of my big mother tree garden pots. My Geisha gone wild is in particularly open soil (was experimenting) and the little seedlings in that pot are already 1/4” thick and over 4’ of strapping growth…probably too stiff to wire them, will have to chop back hard. 🤣

    Do you have any recommendations for absolute beginner bonsai techniques and important understandings? You’re so knowledgeable it’s incredible.

      Hey, thank you for the kind comment. This is the second time I’ve been asked for more beginner level content. I’ll be prioritizing some beginner episodes in the spring.
      Until then, I would recommend looking over the available free UA-cam videos from Bjorn Bjorholm (Eisei-en Kyoto) high level bonsai techniques with great explanations, Ryan Neil (Bonsai Mirai) lots of conifer videos and great beginner series to understand the basics of design, bonsai soil, tree selection, etc.; Peter Chan (Heron’s Bonsai) for great videos on maple propagation and simple bonsai approaches; Corin Tomlinson (Greenwood Bonsai) several good videos on well developed Japanese maples, Adam McCallion (Notion Bonsai) for really approachable bite sized beginner information on various species.

    Great tree. That little branch in the 20 min mark was growing out of the crotch. You are keeping those? Maybe to replace the thicker ones in the future?

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  3 місяці тому

      You’re right, there are two branches there at that crotch that are structural flaws by classic bonsai standards. I haven’t fully decided if I will remove them, but I will definitely keep them small as long as I have them, so they are not significant enough to cause any bulge issues. Part of me wants to keep them because “f the rules” and because they have a unique curve to them. It’s likely as the tree fills in I’ll need to take them out if I want to have a nice view of the lower third of the tree…again, looking at standard bonsai conventions.
      Another issue with the tree is that long straight branch that goes out to the left from the current front. It is very straight with nearly no taper, I’m probably going to have to significantly reduce that branch, 1) because of its shape, and 2) because I will probably push the design weight over toward those trailing winding trunks/branches to the back right side.
      Lots to decide…will need to discuss with the tree 🤣

    Maybe I missed it, but what time of the yr was this full defoliation video shot? Or was this work actually done in early September?!?! That tree has great structure and will develop into a great Shin Deshojo bonsai one day!
    Thanks for sharing, brother, and have a blessed day!

      Howdy friend. I defoliated the tree on August 4th, bud selection August 18th, final shot of the leaves and other trees was today, September 2nd.
      Appreciate the support! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

    Great growth on that deshojo! What part of the country are you located in? August seems late to defoliate unless your in the south, or out west somewhere? Question are your Deshojo’s grafted or on their own roots?

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for stopping by! 🙏🏽 I live in Yorktown, VA. I would push defoliation out to no later than the autumn equinox as a very hard line. This was on 04AUG. For any late defoliations, you can run the risk of the tree deciding to not push growth, and save the buds for spring, so supplemental lighting or extending the warm season in a greenhouse might be needed. Definitely proceed with caution for late season defoliation.
      This big Shin Deshojo is low-grafted onto rootstock by Ed Clark, Round Valley Nursery, CA. This is the first growing season I’ve had it; purchased last winter. All of my own propagation is by rooted cutting or air layer. 🪴 🍁

      @@acer_p_bonsaiThanks for the reply, it’s a nicely grafted tree and size is impressive.
      If your inter in the future I’ve got 20 Deshojo 2 yr old rooted cuttings that were started from Japanese stock. Very pretty trees with great potential for your collection. Cheers.

      Thanks for the offer, but currently not in reading the collection (outside of my own propagation). Would love to see photos if you’re able to connect on Instagram.
      I currently have 2 grafted Shin Deshojo from Ed Clark (and all the props). One US purchased Shin Deshojo mother tree (very different characteristics) and a few props, and a U.S. purchased old school Deshojo with a few propagations.
