"Work hard, study well and eat and sleep plenty, that is the Turtle Hermit way! We must master the art of peace in addition to the art of war!" What he said to Goku and Krillin as kids when he first trained them, it's a lovely callback.
this ep hit hard especially for people who read/watched DB from the very beginning, Roshi maybe a gag character now but he was Goku and Krillin's first master, he's like a father to them😢
something that was pointed out to me is Roshi is the inventor and master of the Kamehameha wave the animation shows his smooth and no wavy lines when Goku's always look wild and unrefined .
"Work hard, study well and eat and sleep plenty" It's easy to forget that master roshi is one of the most vital characters to goku's story. In one of the earlier episodes, we talked about how what differs goku and vegeta is their mentality, not their potential, and the one responsible for that, is the pervy old man, it was him that instilled that lesson in goku as a kid, to never be content and to keep getting stronger. Yes, his saiyan biology gives him a compulsion for combat, but raditzs also had that, nappa too, yet they were never that much, roshi gave goku the idea, that theres always someone stronger than you out there, that you should keep aiming higher.
Yeah and Goku pushes himself just for that alone. Not for power like Vegeta or Raditz or other Saiyan. Goku just does it for the love of the fight and challenge 🤩
Fun note, the voice actor for the Talisman fighter is the same person that voiced Android 18 in DBZA. Amazing to think someone working on a fun parody project voiced a character in the actual show.
I remember when i firat saw this episode on a UA-cam livestream at that point i got into dragon ball a few years ago back in middle school but this episode made me tear up with krillin and goku thinking roshi died. Man i love Dragon Ball
I like that this episode showed that despite everything that has happened up till that point, Goku wasn't ready to let Master Roshi go as he's his 2nd father figure. True that most people aren't ready no matter how old they get, but it's good to show that Goku feels the same way, something we don't really see from him since the early Dragon Ball era.
The tournament of power will feature a lot of old attacks and powers the characters haven't used even since the very original series when goku was still a kid, specially for characters like Roshi, tien and piccolo who have stuck around for so long, for old fans they're very nice callbacks to the old times, and for new fans, they're fun surprises to discover about the characters It's been incredibly fun rewatching the tournament alongside you too, i'm sure you'll continue to love it more and more
You guys really need to check out the original Dragon Ball series before Dragon Ball Z, see Goku as a child grow & train to become the man he is now. This episode is a huge call back to Master Roshi's early days of training a young kid Goku & kid Krillin when they were still rookies, before they became the powerful warriors they are now. Also loved Goku hugging Master Roshi, outside of his grandpa Gohan, Master Roshi was the closes father like figure Goku ever had.
the pink haired girl that tried to attack Roshi first, in the japanese dialogue she ran out of the ring screaming something along the lines of "He'll make me undesirable as a wife!" makes what she says in English really random by comparison but she did have it coming. Roshi in this episode pretty much proves why goku choosing him was a good idea, he may not be as strong as others, but he's got experience in dealing with things that would easily trip up Goku and the others, since most of them like to fight head on for the most part, and sometimes that's not always a good thing, though he's not above going all out if he has too, Ganos learned that the hard way. His speech to Goku and Krillin definitely made anyone who's seen Dragonball happy, because that is indeed what he taught them back in the day.
She says "I'll never get married", because she thought Roshi would do indecent things to her and there's an old superstition in Japan where they think no one would want to marry a woman that's not "pure".
Yeah, a lot of this episode has a ton of references to the original dragonball, all those moves he used were all callbacks to moves he used in the orignal dragonball series where goku was a little kid. This episode always got me a bit emotionally having watched the original dragonball show and how important roshi was to goku.
It was said that roshi put his life force into that kamehameha(to make it stronger). So roshi could have really died right then and there if goku didnt help him
The Sleepy Boy technique showed up in the original Dragon Ball, so you wouldn't have known about it. It doesn't show up often, as the target has to remain focused on the user for it to work. Distractions will prevent it from working properly
8:50 funny enough, probably not. Roshi is at his strongest now. When he was younger, he would’ve been beaten by these guys more easily seeing as how he wouldn’t have even been able to take King Piccolo (the “father”/sort of original body of the Piccolo you guys know)
Some people questioned how strong Roshi had become, but I don't care. We all underestimated him and I'm proud of our old pervert in this episode. But these Powers in this episode were also nice call backs to his old days, when he faced Goku as a Kid.
Definitely underestimated him. It was cool to see and we hadn’t even connected with him as much since we didn’t watch OG DB yet so can only imagine how hard this hit for those that did 🥲
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 OG Roshi is even worse.. seriously from a realistic point of view Roshi is a terrible person/predator/pervert. Thank goodness it's anime. 😆 SO it's fine.
Roshi dying would've had a dramatically different outcome for the tournament. For Goku Roshi is essentially his dad he respects and honors him tremendously. Roshi instilled Goku's philosophy and personality made him into a powerful fighter who is never content with being at his current level and why Goku is so relaxed even though there are times he shouldn't be, Goku took Roshi's lesson's a bit too seriously at times. Also as much as I don't like Sean as a person I will admit when he does Goku shouting he makes Goku seem very primal and wild. He just makes Goku seem like there's a wild side to him that he keeps under constant check.
I REALLY hope you guys hit up OG Dragonball at some point, I think it'll give you a whole new appreciation for just about every character you've come to know and love.
notice how smooth the laminar flow of roshi's kamehameha it may not be as powerful as say goku's but its the mastered version of the attack only roshi is capable of launching it to such a high degree of skill had he be on the same level of goku he would easily over power any ki beam contested battles
It doesn't come up *a lot*, but since the Dragon Balls can't revive folks who died of natural causes, it could've possibly been the end for Roshi if he really died back there- which explains the extent of Goku's and Krillin's distress For the two of them, Roshi really is the closest they got to a lifelong father figure, I mean you two know how Krillin still lived at Roshi's even back in the Buu arc. And Goku in Japanese actually calls Roshi the same thing he used to call his own grandfather (jii-chan/"gramps") 😔
In the japanese version, the girl who tried to seduce Roshi jumped cause Roshi hinted he was going to ravish her lol she the thing she yelled before jumping was that he "will turn her into a undesirable bride"
You've likely already seen it at this point but eventually we'll get to see your reactions here on UA-cam to an upcoming event with a familiar character that hopefully will see you look back at a nearly similar moment with Krillin here.
In manga Roshi's moves were similar to ultra instinct and he took care of pride troopers like child. He even fought jiren as a last lesson for Goku and dodged many of his attacks.

Would have been better if she actually voiced 18 from Kai to Super but then Funimation arent fans of DBZA except for Chris Sabat
Doesn't she run her own agency for VAs?
In original Dragon Ball Master Roshi used the hypnotizing move in the 21st World Tournament.
This is the one dragon ball episode that makes me tear up every...single...time i see it. The best Master Roshi episode by far.
That hypnotic dance is one of Roshi's first techniques. It's cal'ed the drunken monkey's dance (dragon ball).
Great name 😁
Is that what its called in the sub? I remember in the dub it was called "sleepy boy".
@thecoffeemainiak5400 I really don't know. They change everything as the time pass.
This episode was a love letter to the Turtle Hermit.

5 more until the entire atmosphere changes. I’m excited for this.
As long as they dont play the dub version of that song then we're good

and they didn't think about how creepy it is that Master Roshi can hypnotize people.
😳 hadn’t thought about those implications 😱

roshi did hypnotism in the og dragonball
Very rare to see Goku cry.
Which is why it’s so heartbreaking 😢
Man. Sean has had a couple times in Super to really shine, this is one of them. Goku's voice acting here is incredible.
Sean and Sonny really sold the emotional performances from Goku and Krillin, to convey how much they care about Roshi
Now that Epic the Musical is complete, you might enjoy watching the Ithaca Premiere party

In this episode, Roshi recites the famous Konami code. up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right... if I recall correctly
Was wondering if that reference was intentional 😁
Lots of master roshi moves where shown in dragon ball
Roshi is a massive character in OG DB so alot of the moves in this episode are call backs to moves he did to opponents in OG.
