Thank you, thank you thank you. When I was between five and nine years old (early 1960’s), Jean Pierre Hallet was my next-door neighbor in Westchester Los Angeles. My mother had his books and was quite infatuated with him (and I can see now why lol) so even though I was way too young to read them, I devoured them, and they changed my life.
Ever since then, I’ve had a lifelong fascination with different ethnic cultures and majored in anthropology in college. Although I never worked in the field, I have a lifetime of trips to very remote areas to spend time with what you might call primitive cultures. I had no idea until I watched this video what an incredible and life-changing influence this man had on my life. His vision of primitive people being “just like us”, worthy of respect and living creative and fulfilling lives has influenced me for my whole life, and I had no idea he was the source.
I have not gone back and read his book since I was very young. But I have memories of him as a kind of scary figure. Which makes sense because he’s a very big man and as a small child, I have memories of him towering over me. And he is missing part of his body because of the explosive accident he had prior to that.
This short clip explains so much of influence on my life he had that I never realized. This is the only video I’ve ever seen of him and I’ve not seen him for 60 years.

I definitely recommend Jean-Pierre Hallet's book Congo Kitabu. It's amazing, and (according to him) completely accurate.

Reading it right now, from the jungle in Hawaii.
Out-of-print, expensive, but worth it. Awesome read.

Omgosh, I've been watching Mike Connors on Mannix on MeTV now-- 2am- yikes!-- after my parents watched it in the 70's and now I'm hooked! Started researching him and found this video here with Mike Douglas, another 70's favorite in our home daily! Connors was gorgeous, tall, deep voice and I'm crushing on him now, of all things, lol! What men there were back then. Singing about love for their wives, family etc., so adult. So nice back then. The singer of Little Green Apples has a good voice and I never knew of him and love that song. Forgot about Marty, but he was also a hilarious regular in the 70's. How I laughed at the Connor trumpet part where they started dancing, haha! Thanks SO much for these retro pieces. I wish life were still like those days....

Bless Marty Allen's heart ! How kind of him to help support the troops at those military hospitals ! Even if a person didn't support the govt's actions in regards to the Viet Nam conflict, the troops themselves deserved to be cared for & supported. I fondly recall watching Mike's show as a kid & teen. How sweet to hear of Marty's happy marriage. And groovy to see Mike Connors, who grew up here in Calif's San Joaquin Valley (real name : Gregor Ohanion).

My understanding is that Marty did those hospital tours at his own expense. That made his kindness even more special.

@@theexpresidents I'll admit I tend to overthink things -- I am a detail-oriented Virgo, and also an empath. That should explain my post, which I've since deleted, because maybe I was wrong in my interpretation of what I saw. Marty was a sympathetic person; I could tell he experienced life intensely, felt things deeply and, as are most comedians, was highly emotional. He admitted so in his book.
One of my new year's resolution is to try not to overthink things so much, as it often impedes my happiness. It's going to require some effort, as this is part of my basic nature.
Have you had an opportunity to read Marty's memoirs? You'll learn a lot about him in his own words. Of course, I realize that in any autobiography, the author is only going to reveal what he wants his readers to know, and there's a lot that Marty didn't say in his. People like myself naturally try to read between the lines, which leads to unanswered questions and fodder for speculation. Marty was very intelligent, and I'm sure he must have realized this when he carefully selected its content.
Nonetheless, it's a great read, as far as it goes. I suggest you pick up a copy if you haven't one, already.

This was great. If you happen to have the Mike Douglas Show that aired on March 29, 1976, I would love to see it. It also featured Mike Connors, and his mother, Alice Ohanian, was one of the guests as well.

    Hello,
Would you happen to have the episode of some U S Coast Guard men who were on the show with Mike Douglas and Marty Allen?? My dad was one of the men his name was Roger S. Adams he has passed away so I am not sure of the year. But, I do know it would have been between 69-74. I would absolutely love to see it and share it with my sister if at all possible. Thank you, Teresa
P.s I do have a photo of all the men standing with Mike and Marty.

Wow that's awesome. If you can Teresa please try to find out who the other guests were on that particular episode. Marty Allen was a guest and guest host on Mike Douglas show many many times. I will research. Glad you enjoyed!

You should Google how many episodes actually exist, scan through them, then re-examine the absurdity of your question.

I could feel the embarrassment of all three men when that (apparently) preplanned routine was botched. Some very uncomfortable moments, clearly evident on their faces! I hope Marty and Mike Connors were still friends, afterward. They all moved on, but the awkwardness in that scene was palpable.
