This reminds me of me as a child and now as a 68 year old. When we moved 36 yrs ago to a 200 plus year old house in the woods, I immediately started a life list of animals and plants. I started a herbarium and a log of nature around our house. I still do. Put aside an hour to go back and do these things you love. You have to schedule these times or you’ll never do them. Your art even as a child was great. Your details are wonderful. Don’t lose this.
You are an old soul. Encouraging us all to think and act for the best of our environment and future generations. As a grandma with 3 little ones, I thank you.
I always felt weird sharing my passions with my friends in high school. I was very much the same as you, im only 22 but, I hated social media, I disliked owning a phone young so I never used it. I was always outside and I was looking for sticks and rocks, plants, birds, bugs, and I have like 16 notebooks and binders with notes and specimens. Seeing this made me want to get back into it :)
It's such a gift to be touched by Mother Earth. Yesterday at the bike shop. a friend stopped to tell me about a moment. The sunshine glistening off the sycamore trees in the morning mist. Stopped them in their tracks. We agreed that these sometimes fleeting, yet magical, spiritual moments are such a blessing. This gift as you know, makes us who we are and our willingness to be kind to our world. Been watching for a while . I have never seen you so excited 😊
When your special interest never changes and you find your young self's exploration. I've had this happen once, and it's funny to see exactly when I learned specific things that are now second nature.
Beautiful vlog, thank you so much for this delightful experience. It reminds me of similar activities I did as a child and young person and now at 67 I find I am returning to such activities. It is a soulfully soothing experience. Thank you again.
I really enjoyed seeing how you spent your childhood! It’s obvious you were drawn to nature at a young age, and you were very observant of things around you. Your detailed drawings remind me of how I was as a child, and I agree how it feels hard to find time and calmness in our lives today to focus on such things. I hope your notebooks not only bring back nostalgic memories, but also they inspire you too!
I so long for the time pre-computer and internet...I was born in 1959, so my formative years were without technology (even television, as it was too expensive). My high school English students can't imagine the world without cellphones and social media. What have they missed? On the flipside what have I missed not having so much technology at my fingertips? Thank you for sharing your interests and pursuits from childhood.
Starting with photography 16 years ago was the thing that changed how I look at a lot of things around me. I also started noticing more of the beauty of nature then :) Now that I've been addicted to plants for a while, that only grew haha!
you and those drawings are gorgeous and i think "being yourself" at any age really contributes to that...unfortunately we don't learn that until we're gone through it.
I loved hearing about what you did as a kid. Makes me feel less lonely now to know of and see someone else who can find much zest in things like vocabulary or frog sounds while drawing. Most ppl are like wtf but im like LETS GOOO. You also kinda made me want to take a spin at the dictionary. Its intriguing to me at what we pick up on at different stages of our lives. Much love summer!!!
You could start doing this again. Why not? Make a binder of all plants growing at your Flock Finger Lakes site. You could pick and press flowers, or make photos and print them. And then write some notes on each plant. Not needed to do everything all at once, it can be spreaded out over many years. I started a binder on 'herbal medicine' some years ago, I add a new page whenever I feel like it.
It's very sad to see that so many children, parents and even grandparents are addicted to mobile phones, computers and their holy tell lie vision. All of this is not a coincidence but pl. nn. d. a long time ago.
I love this!! My grandfather kept field journals of all the plants and birds in the woods behind his house and it was my favorite thing growing up. I keep telling myself that I should start my own - this really motivates me!
I really enjoyed watching this, I also agree that it's sad that most kids today wouldn't experience that or even be focused enough to take on projects like this. Your attention to details are admirable. Thank you for sharing
This is beautiful. It reminds me of myself as a child. And though I didn’t pursue a career that connected directly to my live of nature, it is still somehow connects to most everything I do and colors everything I see.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing this sweet and wonderful glimpse into who you are. I had so many books as a child and an adult. Your Mom sounds like a wonderful person. (And I am of the generation that had ZERO computers in our classrooms!😂) As a young woman, I listened to nature and bird song cassettes as well. Sometimes, I listened to a couple who were bird experts. She would say, " Who cooks for you allll!" Is what the Barred Owl says and then they would play a Barred Owl recording. I wish I could find that tape today. Thanks for showing us your lovely childhood. So very enjoyable! ❤❤❤ You have such a beautiful soul!
Such a delightful video! Lovely to see the roots (pun intended) of your very extensive plant knowledge. Hope you wii be able to indulge your passion a lot more in the years to come.
This is not plant related but Summer, you definitely reignited architecture for me since I have a mini stroke couple year ago. I’m going to visit different architecture in my city and sketch them. Thanks a million! 🙏🏼
I unfortunately didn't have a good eye for nature until I moved for college. Miss a lot of the tropical flora from home ❤ I did often draw and make comic books and write original stories as a kid, on paper. Unfortunately because they're not preserved online most of it is back home/may no longer exist if my mom cleaned them out :p
Your childhood botanical art reminded me about a children’s book I adored as a kid and was incredibly influential: “A Reason For A Flower” by Ruth Heller.
I love and am sooooooo greatly privileged to have heard and seen a glimpse of your past. 🐣🍄🪺🌲🦜 My holidays were solitary growing up too. Nature nurtured me. Childhood is a time of precious, energetic creativity. We do what we love, whenever possible. If we were provided paper, pencils or objects, then we were all set to go. That is a time of precious freedom, a mostly private, intense discovery mission, to the spacious, never-ending realms of our inner self and worth. This might be necessary, in order to live, manage and cruise some rough waters, through the rest of life. Although young, the joyful investigation proves to us, that we are already somebody. It's a relationship, with a compatible, exciting, friendly self. We might need to be creative, outwardly, with our natural passion, in order to provide inner fine-tuned, hand-crafted self - admiration, appreciation and companionship. While close to us, no attention or praise from friends, parents, or teachers, quite fulfills or understands this/us. It seems as if we have microscopic vision towards our inner self and value, while others telescopic. We are unreachable in our uniqueness. We've kept and archived what was precious to us, along our childhood travels. It is truly a treasure to 'find' some childhood 'documents,' observations, recorded with our keenest eyesight, which give light, to the intensity of our then still pure, uncluttered, childhood capabilities and interests. It's especially nice to see that you have been able to stay true to your inner self. Why stop being a mature child of sorts, when they are so naturally, joyfully productive? Merry Christmas and further success in the New Year. Thanks for your generosity in letting us share your experiences. Christmas Greetings to The Flock and Family. 🐦🐦🐔🐓🦉🦅🕊️ 🦆🦆🦆🦆🎄🌳🌲🎀
Thank you for sharing this part of your life. It's despicable how you feel the need to dumb these moments down for this generation. It takes away from the joy.

What a great childhood! You were so connected to nature that you never felt alone. What great therapy that would be for everyone!

OMG, the rounded earthstar and the other "pressed" mushrooms are so cool. I did not know you could preserve fungi like that.
The spore prints are what really preserves the best. But I have only seen an earthstar a few times after I collected that one.
So awesome
That's awesome as someone who's 18 and lives in a town. I'd love to be able to do a general with the difrint grasses

Yeah, we used to have hobbies off the computer back then.
You are so sweet seeing the happiness remembering your childhood 😺

How did you press and preserve those flowers
I first put them between a plant press or book pages and then added them to a sheet of paper and then affixed them with contact paper.
@@summerrayneoakesohh, thank you. I want to get good at it but they end up brown and dried.
